    The Hyundai Elantra N is the logical extension of the performance division which began with the Veloster N back in 2019. In fact, it's the same powertrain: a 286 HP Turbocharged four cylinder, front-wheel drive with LSD, and either a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch auto. It has all kinds of drive mode adjustments to customize the experience, plenty of practical features, and a good multimedia interface. How does it compare to the Jetta GLI and Honda Civic Si? Matt and Zack explore. Text layout in the main photo is on purpose.

    I just bought a 6-speed manual - intense blue. I wasn't crazy about the front-end styling or any of the outside. It grew on me. Then when I drove the car, I didn't really care what the front end looked like anymore. The performance feels like a much more expensive car. If I had another 12k sitting around that I didn't need, I would have bought a Civic Type R. Since I didn't have it like that, this is the next best thing.

Compare this to $28k for an Si or $37K for Integra A-spec and it's personal choice where you want to spend your $$. I would also throw in the WRX for consideration. I put GTI for a different buyer as running costs are significantly higher. We need a new Sentra SE-R!

    600 miles into a 6-spd in Performance Blue, ordered in Dec and paid a hair below sticker so it is possible. Everything I hoped for and more. 53 year old long time sport-compact Gti, WRX,ST, RS, owner......nobody is building anything like this anymore--- Just "nice" enough to impress a few passengers, or at least need no apologies....just "hardcore" enough to put a huge smile on your face the rest of the time. Diff, steering feel, brake feel, throttle response and yes, the sound---- just everything has the right enthusiast's touch. Strangely for some I guess, the feedback on the color and overall look has been EXTREMELY positive. I had a Molten Orange and an Orange Spice Fiesta STs as my last two sport compacts so I guess this color is actually a bit tame lol......and "the face" just works for me, plus the lighting looks good, and for its price-point, I find the headlight function top notch....

    • @operation_inherent_resolve
      @operation_inherent_resolve Před 2 lety +2

      I'm a 50-year-old and i actually own a 2019 fiesta ST and am thinking about purchasing this vehicle. how does the manual feel, and do you use the rev match? do you mind not having the sunroof? why did you go for the manual as opposed to the auto? I really appreciate your post and am looking forward to your response before going for a test drive.

    • @zxmurph1
      @zxmurph1 Před 2 lety +2

      @@operation_inherent_resolve I am an old FWD scca racer nerd, so I had actually tried twice to NOT have a sunroof on my previous STs, but both had them just based on availability. While I ended up enjoying sunroofs for the most part in the Fists, I don't miss it at all in this car, and the "racer nerd" in me is satisfied that I don't have the dead weight of a sunroof overhead lol. The manual feels great, with a much more weighty, metallic feeling shifter than the Fist, clutch take up is light, but very smooth--- not sure what the issue was with a few reviews of the clutch out there. Since the DCT was obviously going to be a very sporting one (the N powershift mode for instance, happily allows torque to increase into the next clutch engagement, leading to a very satisfying "punch" in the back at each shift), I struggled a bit deciding when it came to ordering--- what finally sealed it was the idea that this was likely the last NEW manual transmission car I may ever buy, so I went with it. The rev match feature, as is the case with most cars that have it, works so perfectly---- at first I stubbornly turned it off, then reluctantly tried it, then noticed to absolutely no one's surprise how great it works, aaaaaand how much better it is than I.
      Overall, I hoped for a new car that would capture the rowdy fun of the Fist. It easily does that, while crossing the threshold into what is a genuinely quick, high performance car by any measure. What I didn't expect, we just how much "nicer" of a thing it would be as a whole. The interfaces and telematics are absolutely top notch, seats are about the same as the Fist Recaros in terms of comfort for me, while being more accommodating for others and a lot more "upscale" in terms of appearance. The gains in overall size and comfort was not initially even considered by me, but is now a very welcome bonus!! Suspension adjustment ranges from significantly stiffer that the Fist set up, to significantly softer....the softer setting along with the long wheelbase makes this car seem like an S-class after nearly 200k miles in two Fists lol. Finally, exhaust settings from genuinely rowdy and being "that guy" with the pops and bangs (much louder than the Mountune catback on the Fist), to the ECO or normal mode being much quieter than the Mountune exhaust. I cruise into the neighborhood quieter than both old orange cars, while a few miles back I was singing Seb Loeb anti-lag fantasies through an underpass. Highly recommended.

I did drive a manual and the performance difference is noticeable. I suggest you drive them both before fully committing. Happy hunting!

I see what you mean as far as extras that the hard core enthusiast really doesn't need, and in the long term, your probably better off w/out the SR. I very well may do the same. Bought my 2015 Kia Sorento in March of 2017 and have had problems with it pretty much right away. Started with my key fob. The driver door does not recognize my key fob and I have to either open the passenger door to unlock my car or hit the fob multiple times before the driver's door opens. I've replaced the batteries and it hasn't helped. My alternator dies at 66K miles, which I thought was ridiculous. I called Kia to see if they would grant any good will since I was out of warranty and they did nothing. Claimed they couldn't help since I was the 2nd owner.

      @japtor Před 2 lety +1

      I've had mine for a bit over a month now I think, approaching 1500 miles. It's pretty stiff but fine as a daily, depending on your tolerance for it at least. I'm coming from a 2008 Mini w/sport suspension and it feels comparable (maybe a bit rougher) so I was kinda used to that type of ride.
      I think the middle setting is the best, might be a little harder (not entirely sure there) but the big difference is that it basically dampens out all the bounciness present in the lowest setting. I haven't bothered with the hardest setting since testing it out on the long way home from the dealer, can't see using that one except on perfectly smooth road/track.
      One last thing to keep in mind (from what I vaguely remember reading) is that the seats are supposedly more livable than the ones in the other N models, so that probably helps a bit.

    Just like how you guys have mentioned in another video, that speed is starting to become synthetic due to EV’s being faster than anything ICE and easy to get behind and drive, I think that transmissions are also becoming very synthetic as well. Just like you mentioned that having these dual-clutched transmissions in normal “everyday” vehicles, is just as good of a feeling of connectivity as an race cars and high priced vehicles, that’s making these cars feel…boring, hence synthetic. This is why manual transmissions will always be favored as the choice for pure connective fun. Each vehicles manual transmission feels different than another’s. It also can be modified to become personal in feel and connectivity. A dual clutch on a car that is tuned, feels very much the same as another vehicles tuned dual clutch.
    So what I’m saying is though dual clutches are faster, they just aren’t as special…

Another note is this comes with the integrated wheel bearing/axel it's one unit so if those ever bust you have to replace the whole unit with the cost of both in long term ownership. I assume this is a high wear part because fwd enthusiast vehicle.
