Recruit training for the U.S. Coast Guard is held at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May in Cape May, New Jersey. Coast Guard recruit training covers basic seamanship, drill, military bearing, and firefighting. During their time at Cape May, recruits are subjected to the usual "boot camp" atmosphere of direct instruction and intense motivation. Recruits must adhere to strict rules such as hygiene and uniform regulations and obey all lawful orders...

Actually, my section commander at TRACEN Cape May just gave the Marines a run-down on how to run a fun program called RAMP, or Recruit Attitude Motivational Program. It's for people who can't quite understand how to be a good recruit. It's a lot of... fun physical activities and just breaking you down, as much as possible.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to go into detail so I'll try to keep this fuzzy but as someone who recently graduated what sets the coast guard bootcamp apart from other bootcamps is tremendous stress that gets placed on you at basically every point unlike other branches that's what puts Coast Guard at 2nd or 1st place depending on who you talk to. If your top 2 hardest bootcamps aren't marines or CG you're wrong.

The CG is extremely selective. You have to score higher on the ASVAB than any other branch (45 for CG, 36 for AF and then falls off for the rest. The others want bodies, not brains). If you make the cut then the purpose of boot is to try and break you and spit you out. Both mental and physical stress. But boot is a game. If you learn the rules early and play along you will be one of the truly few to wear the uniform.

Make no mistake that just because the basic training and boot camp isn't as long for the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard as it is in the Army and Marine Corps, it doesn't mean the three branches are easier than the Army and Marine Corps, not at all true. I'm former Army but I never underestimate any branch that's not the Army or Marine Corps. The military in general isn't at all easy doing and it's not something that everyone can say that they've done or experienced, as it's not for everyone. I respect and support anyone who gets the courage and strength to serve and put on their uniform every day, in the military regardless of what branch they end up serving in. Every single job in every single branch of the military, is vital and essential to the mission of protecting and serving this country and nation. I thank you all for your service, to all current and former military service members! Something else that I want to mention and point for anyone who has wondered why there are Marine Corps Drill Instructors alongside their Navy Recruit Division Commander Counterparts in Navy Boot camp. That's because the Marine Corps and the Navy works together side by side and why the Navy Recruits and Sailors end up getting trained by both the Navy and Marine Corps.

I went to Boot Camp at Alameda in 1960. Lots of yelling and screaming, even some pushing and shoving, esp if you got out step on the grinder. I hated hand washing our dungarees in the big sinks behind the barracks. My favorite part was going out in the row boats. At first, we didn't know what we were doing and went around in circles. After a lot of yelling and screaming we finally got our act together and got going. We would have four boats in the water at a time and race around the island. Civilians on the shore would cheer us on. FUN.

Alpha 109, Alameda. Two ambulances would follow us to the grinder where we would high-port (hold our M16 over our head and run) without water until 2 of us passed out and fell down. Very cool vid. It's always funny to call Coasties 'Puddle Pirates' but I am also smart enough to know and recognize the CG's great contributions to America - namely saving many, many lives, and preventing drugs from entering our borders.

It’s an experience that ends up being a seemingly never ending roller coaster ride for sure. I went through when COVID-19 restrictions and concerns were at or close to their all time high so my experience was significantly different than most people before and after me. It’s hard for me to say if that made things easier or harder. Probably a little bit of both. My company commanders were interesting to sum it all up. It may not seem like it but they really do want to bring the best out of you. I do hope to see them again in the fleet somewhere so I can properly tell them thank you.
