As a retired officer, and former enlisted person (going back to the late 1980's) before being commissioned, I found based on my knowledge of the system that the recruiter being interviewed here to be very genuine; very openly honest; and that he is really giving some spot-on advice to any potential 2020's recruits. A very honest interview he gave.

I am left with the same impression. This recruiter is candid, knowledgeable, forthcoming, and articulate. In short, as you stated, very genuine. I wish I could've encountered a recruiter with just 50% of what this guy possesses when I signed on for my "one-and-done" enlistment. But that was a long time ago too.

This recruiter has a lot of wisdom. He says that people will often 'choose college or choose the military', which is not really the way that people should look at their options. You can go to college anytime in your life, and courses that you take like in the military often count as college credits. But you should really look at education as life long, or at least, career long. Personally I keep taking courses and enjoy them. The coast guard is such a small branch that members often have to have many skills to do their jobs properly. When I read the bios of high up the ladder petty officers, its shocking how many schools and certifications, and even degrees that they have. It blows away most other military services and even most private sector jobs bios. Education should never be considered something that you do once in your life, particularly in the coast guard.

    • @shawnmendrek3544
      @shawnmendrek3544 Před 2 měsíci

That is how it works, the higher in ranks you go in the military, everyone has a college degree. When you think about it, it makes sense. Know more paid more.

CG was the only branch I would join because it is just that perfect for me but unfortunately by the time I graduated they only had 155 spots open in the entire country for the specific job I wanted. Idk how they pick through those cause you either have the qualifications or you don't so I don't know how you would stand out even more.

The one thing that bugs me is some technicalities. One, the LEOSA and how it doesn't apply to Coasties. Not even sure if it applies to CGIS agents once they retire. There's a conflict with what the USC states, how the UCMJ and retired pay relates to retired folk, etc. But "reduced pay for reduced services" - retired pay. And how you can be called on the carpet when retired for violation of the UCMJ (doesn't happen much at all but it's a carrot being hunger over your head). Just because you have no badge doesn't mean you were not out enforcing laws and writing citations. So, under the LEOSA, based on their training, i.e., small arms qualified, why won't the Comdt man up and have this applied to it's members unless he/she rather change the USC to only apply to a specific community with in the ranks.

I was pleased with myself for writing a good score on the ASVAB (this was early 1987). My CG recruiter let me know that the test was tailored for people who had a solid 8th grade education. At that time I had a couple of years of college under my belt. I went on to become an FT in the Coast Guard. It wasn't too many years later that I discovered that I made an extremely bad career move. The Coast Guard hated FTs and only tolerated us due to receiving NAVORD (Navy Ordnance) money. I cannot think of a worse job in the CG than being a MK92 FCS technician on a '270 ('Famous' Class) cutter.

Adventure, life long friendships. The coast guard is like a small family. It's pretty common you will be stationed with people you know even at a different location at some point in your career. Education.Tuition assistance. You can take classes while working at huge discount. Great places to be stationed. Most duty stations are state side. There's quite a few jobs that translate to verify lucrative jobs as a civilian. Like IT/cyber security or marine science/marine inspector, to name a few

When I was in, 1970 I was guaranteed nothing. In bookcamp we were pretty much guaranteed the 14th or 17th District. That would have been Hawaii and Alaska. I requested the 14th District which was Hawaii, which I got. On graduation week when we were provided our assighnments, I was told that I was assigned to Guam, which was in the 14th District. About a week after I was on Guam I was told that I was aassigned to Yap, a Long Rage Navigation System., otherwise a semi-isolated island in Micronesia. Don't worry, they no longer exist.

Hola! Weird question! Can you go A - School pregnant? I'm about to join, I'm married and would like to have children, I would like to be Yeoman but my asvab score was 43 too low to choose a job, Im from Puerto Rico island so my first language is Spanish.. I study hard but still get a low score,... I'm 26 and I'm wondering if with the time I get pregnant will affect me to go A - School.Btw I buy your book and leave an amazing review because is a treasure!! 100% recommended, thanks for all the extra info we need to know to make a better experience bc, specially for me that english is not my language it was so easy to read and understand, is a must! the BEST book out there! Gracias Thank you!!!! Be bless

You can’t be pregnant during any point of your training.

@@militaryjourneymen yea my question is pretty similar to this but im prior service. Im just over 1 year in the army reserve and want to go active but my choice of jobs in the army is limited due to being a prior. Do you know if my options are also limited if i wanted to go coast guard from army as a prior elistment?

@@MonstaFreak13 I'd say to talk to a CG recruiter/schedule your MEPS appointment. Your CG liaison at the MEPS will ultimately know the most, as they'll tell you what jobs you qualify for and know that whole process, but you definitely should contact a recruiter about that.

seriously? you didn't know about the academy prior to enlisting? that doesn't sound like a recruiter problem, it sounds like you didn't do your research.

Yeah, seems like a pretty big thing to miss, but I'm sure it's possible. I knew of USMA, USNA, USAFA, and even USMMA, before I knew of the USCGA. Hell, I wouldn't even know of it if I hadn't seen a USCGA backpack at my high school.

When I enlisted there was an 18 month waiting list. This was in 1969, so I signed up when I was a junior in high school. Vietnam was still kicking and a lot of young men didn't want to be drafted. Way back when the USCG still had a basic training center in California. Basic training was tougher than I expected. 😎🚤🚂🚃🚃🚃✝

Why does every coast guard recruiter think they are the shit? More than army, Air Force, marines and navy recruiters.

CG boot camp does a really good job at beating you down for the first 6 weeks and then really encouraging you for the last 2. You leave there with all the confidence in the world.

Peter Serrano, what the hell are you even talking about? This video does not give off any of those vibes at all. You're just manufacturing it to be able to get pissed at something. All of the services respect each other, and they all carry out different missions.
