The running joke when I was in ‘90-‘94 was if you can’t make rate then boatswain mate. I left as a QM2 before the rate was absorbed into OS/BM. Back then BM was a deck force rating whereas QM was the bridge/nav job.

I'm thinking about enlisting. Two of the careers that interest me are Diver and Cyber Mission Specialist but they require you to be E-4. How easy or hard is it to transfer to a different career? Lets say I start out at E-1 as a Boatswain's Mate then when I reach E-4 what's the process of transferring to a Diver?

Hey boss sorry to bother. Could you help me understand or see the pros and cons between MSST and the taclets I would like to know which one is better. I’m 31 and I’m planning to join the coast guard this year and i would love to go ME and hopefully and god willingly become part of those special units to fight contraband and more. Went through a five month long police Academy three years ago and basically got smoked every single day. Definitely looking forward to Cape May.

What is a DSF and is it Miami consider one of those for MEs, I speak Spanish so I don’t know if that’s a plus for the ME position

During Army Basic Training in the late ‘60s, we bloused our fatigue trousers. When I got AIT, our drill sergeant decided that blousing was not allowed. We tucked our pants into our boots. When I was in OCS, we went back to blousing with our Corcoran jump boots. While on active duty afterward, I continued to wear the jump boots even though I was not airborne. Nobody said anything about their being inappropriate. In fact, I was named General’s Orderly while wearing them.

Wait, they got firefighting gear and OBAs for the burn building? Back in the stone age we did it in battledress and #2 hose provided that sprinklerhead to breathe under. D-123

Can you talk about duty stations. I’m interested in going CG reserves but i have my home and business in texas. I want to make sure that when I go through boot camp I will be stationed in texas. The recruiter said I would be but I have heard from multiple prior service that recruiters are known to lie. Lol

Im in the auxiliary and this channel has motivated me many times to learn more, do better, study harder, and give me more motivation to serve the gold side folks. Wow Julian! I never realized you were in the real estate game. Except you are doing it way better lol. So far I have 6 doors and a camper airbnb. Between my husband and I, we've only used VA loans. We house hack while we live in the home we purchase for a year then move and rent it out. You are truly inspirational!

I hear some who originally enlisted 4 years active are being allowed to use this option after two years active duty. Is this true?

So what is the current process to join the Cyber Command rate?? What about if you join a rate that has a bonus. How long do you have to do that rate before you can transfer to a different rate? I am honestly looking at joining as an OS for the bonus. But I really want to transfer to either MST, BM, ME or Cyber long term. Thanks in advance!

I want to join active duty but I really can’t leave Texas because of my children… Can I join reserves and still be really active in the program? I want to get deployed and be gone for a few months at a time but I want to be based out of Texas so reserves sounds great, but can I volunteer for assignments often and make it as like a full time job?

In the 1980s we were smaller than NYPD, and we closed govt island boot camp, think only 3 companies after us.....

If I plan to do 2 years active and the rest reserve will I still get the benefits since I am married ? Or will I have to do 4 years so I can get the housing allowance for me and my wife? Thanks

As a former DC man, you're mostly going to unclog sh*tters. You'll do a lot of pipe welding....on sewage pipes. I've been out since 1998 and I can still smell and taste cooked raw sewage in my sinuses.

I went to every station I asked for. Never asked for bonus, or anything else I got every ship I wanted.

In smaller helo units AMT's and AET's do almost the same thing. The only difference is the AMT's don't touch electronics. The AET's end up doing both.
