The Coast Guard is a branch of the military as well as part of Homeland Security 😊
Also the haircut wasn't free, they charged my husband like $8😂
Its only military(DOD) in times of war. And then homeland security every time else.
Coast Guard isn’t a branch and yeah the haircuts aren’t free😂
Y’all go ahead and google 14USC1 then come on back here and make some more educated comments
@@ShortyG724 Absolutely correct.
@@OrioleBeagle cool, there still apart of the department of homeland security not the department of defense. Not a branch
I have nothing but respect for everyone who has undergone such intense training to get where they are.
That captain at the end. He's the difference between a manager and a leader... You can tell that every last soldier's best interest has been taken to heart with him and he truly wants to see them succeed. He wants to set them up for success with confidence and assurance that they can do this. Pretty impressive guy.
Coast Guardsmen not soldiers lol
My brother is a Coastie. Thanks for the video. Was always curious. He has some hilarious stories of punishments that people had to go through.
Yeah, like pushing your sea bag across the squad bay deck using your nose. Flopping around like a fish as they yell, "On yer back!" "On yer belly!" over and over again.
So, one of the questions you asked was "do you think this is for show?" I can tell you from experience that it was not. A typical day at boot camp when I went through 4 years ago would consist of at minimum 3 "fire drills", in addition to a variety of holding items (books, canteens, rifles) above your head or directly in front of you. And yes if you got caught slacking you started all over and we'd say "Thank you Shipmate, Thank you". Meal times were stressful. You couldnt look up from your plate, you had to follow traffic patterns and hope that you didn't get stopped by one of the CCs for questioning. You would get stopped outside while walking and questioned by random CCs who were in your path. The CCs actually have time limits for each "punishment" (holding water bottles, holding mattresses, holding line, etc) that they follow, so there are limitations on what they can do.
Also for clarification, the Coast Guard is not in the Department of Defense, however, it is a branch of the military serving under the Department of Homeland Security. There are policies and documents as proof describing it as such.
Agreed. I went through USCG boot camp at Cape May in Feb 1977. It is no cake walk today and back then it was down right abusive. But, we survived. Thank you shipmate for your service.
Retired BM1 in 1997.

I'm not in the military, but I always love reading and watching about it, and I think your videos are great.
And contrary to how other commenters full of obnoxious assumptions feel, I find it refreshing that you interact with your girlfriend like an equal human being and not a fragile princess china doll (this is coming from a wife and mom of 4 here). I didn't think you were being rude at all.
I sometimes wish I would have joined the military when I graduated high school, I love the structure, respect, and absolute discipline it instills in a person.
Like how Austen said the Coast Guard is still part of the military people!
Yes they are Homeland Security but they're still part of the military!
The Coast Guard is a branch of the military and is defined by Title 14 of the United States Code:
The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times. The Coast Guard shall be a service in the Department of Homeland Security, except when operating as a service in the Navy.
Just to clarify. The Coast Guard "was established January 28, 1915" is a little misleading. The law "establishing" the Coast Guard actually combined the Revenue Cutter Service (established on Aug. 4, 1790) the Lifesaving Service (established in 1848) and renamed them as the U.S. Coast Guard. That's why the Coast Guard considers it's beginning to be Aug. 4, 1790. Originally, the Revenue Cutter Service operated under the Treasury Department and its main mission was to stop smuggling. Because of that and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 which forbids the use of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Air Force for domestic law enforcement. The only exceptions are each state's National Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard which is not a full time organization under the Department of Defense. As more peacetime responsibilities were added to the Coast Guard it was decided to move control from the Department of Treasury to the Department of Transportation in 1967. The Coast Guard was moved into the newly created Department of Homeland Security in 2003 because of its law enforcement missions.
@@joegibson4946Still the military. thank you for proving the point further
As someone who is part of the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard is part of the military. During times of peace, the Coast Guard is under the Department of Homeland Security and during times of war, the Coast Guard essentially rolls into the Department of Defense partnering alongside the Navy.
He always gets annoyed at least once 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You two are a great couple. I saw, "the death stare" when he said, "please don't Stir your drink directly into the microphone." "Please Thank You." I thought to myself. Haha I get that look 20 times A-day from my wife. She is very stealthy with it though. Just like mine.
The scariest part is when you don't know what they just said.
Austin thanks for covering the CG, always good to see us out there. To clarify, U.S.C. Title 14 designates the CG as a military service. Spot on with us being DHS and not DOD. We always have room for people ready to serve, reach out to a recruiter.
The Coast Guard is EXTREMELY competitive though, and definitely the hardest branch to enlist in. You basically can’t have any debt either.
The reason the Coast Guard is under DHS now [it’s been under various dept’s at various times] rather than DOD is basically Constitutional. The U.S. Constitution places limits on the rest of the U.S. military as to how they are allowed to interact with our civilian population; pre-Revolution historical experience with the British military served to inform this. USCG peacetime operations “our ‘day’ job” require closer interaction than is typical for the other services.

The Coast Guard is apart of the Military
As one of the country's six armed services, the Coast Guard has been involved in every major U.S. war since 1790, from the Quasi-War with France to the Global War on Terrorism. Just as an FYI: I do Veteran's Administration Disability Exams. I see Veterans from the Army, Navy, USMC, Air Force, AND Coast Guard. The Federal Government classifies the Coast Guard as one of the branches of the armed forces.

It's not. The only time it's under the DOD is during wartime.
DOD does not determine if it is a military service.

John here on wifeys computer. Was in the Guard from 1963 to 1967. Boot camp was 13 weeks back then and it was usually 14 weeks as you were in forming company for a week waiting for enough other recruits and getting your uniforms etc. Some of what CG boot is like today is easier, some is more difficult AND it is definitely more skill focused. CG is the real deal and if you are planning on sitting around then the Guard is NOT for you. If you want responsibility then the CG will surely give it to you and often when you least expect it.

Found your videos when I got to Bahrain to see what its like. Good stuff bro, and ya that boot camp sucks they definitely didn't show all the crazy crap they had us do. Its been a solid 13 years since then so it might have changed
Yea, sadly a lot of the bootcamps have changed since then. They have gotten easier , yelling has decreased a little bit. Newer recruits are not fully experiencing what people had years ago.
The Coast Guard IS part of the military, ya putz! 🤦
I'm sure that it wasn't your intention to come across this way, but just to be clear; the USCG is a branch of the United States Military. It is under the umbrella of DHS not DoD like you said but it is a branch of the military. There are USCG members deployed overseas on Navy ships and there is USCG intelligence deployed in many countries across the world. The same oath is taken when you swear in, you're under contract, wether you're enlisted or commissioned, etc.
thank you for this reply! A lot of people aren't aware of these roles, and the reasons. CG can act as Law Enforcement because CG isn't under DOD, but under DHS, for years were under Treasury, then under Transportation. DHS makes a whole lot of sense, but so did placing CG under the other two. From the start, when there was no Navy, or any other armed force in the US, (All the revolutionary services being disbanded) there was only the Revenue Cutter Service (Revenue Marine, and later Coast Guard) as an armed force for USA . The first and primary role was to ensure that revenue was collected on imports, along with battling Piracy. There are actually 7 Military Branches, 8 with Space Force. Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, NOAA, PHS, and Merchant Marines. Of these 8, so far, 5 are armed forces. Military means under the jurisdiction of Uniform Code Of Military Justice UCMJ. Under the War Powers act the CG is absorbed into the Navy, which is why all CG Cutters are trained to Naval standards. and ships are maintained accordingly. There is a lot of really interesting history in all the services!

To answer the question if they are being more agressive for the cameras I can confirm that they are probably going a little easier. We once had to stand up and sit down at our classroom desks for a hour and a half until we all were in unison because we had some people fall asleep in class. It was an incredible experience.
Just graduated boot camp, they definitely toned it down for the camera.
your going to Alaabama WHOOOO gets me every time

Hi Austen, Amazing channel and enjoy all what you do. I was in Navy bootcamp back in '99 integrated div 399/400 and got out in 07. Back then we had a very intense training. We called it "Cycling" or "cycled" . We also had what was called "Ricky books (notepad with general orders) and "Ricky pens" and actual water canteens that we carried on our waist with green belts. you made a comment about the intensity level with water bottles perhaps for the camera. I have some questions on Navy bootcamp. Do you think you could do a comparison of IT among the different decades and how long were your ITs? When we got cycled they (RDCs) would say time to make it rain or make the ceilings sweat, we would push our racks all the way to the wall and literally get worked out for an hour straight or more until the ceiling literally built up condensation to drip on the floor. We also used the "Ricky pens" as a form of "training". We had to hold them out or up for approx. 20 min or whatever (don't ever remember using the water canteen) similar to the CG using the water bottles. Apologies for the long comment. Just wanted your thoughts, seems like the bootcamp IT perhaps has changed ALOT since I went through. Thanks for reading and for your channel. It is awesome. HOORAH!!
@austenalexander liked the video but as a Coastie myself I felt it necessary to speak up about this video. I feel there are two ways your intro can be interpreted; 1) being that your saying the Coast Guard is not a branch of the military or military service or 2) it is not a branch of the military in the sense of part of the other branches in the DoD. Yes you are correct that we fall under DHS but August 4, 1949 Congress passed under Title 14 USC 101 that estaishes the Coast Guard as a military service and a branch of the armed forces. Just clearing up any confusion to anyone watching or who subscribes to your channel.
