1:50 Trainees arrive at the PRC (Pfingston Reception Center) and are issued basic gear including a backpack, flashlight, reflective belt, hygiene items, APECS parka, etc... before marching back to the dormitories for the first night. Basically anything they would need right away, before first issue or before they have a chance to visit the BX for the first time. We pay for them first time to the BX.
2:50 Depending which dormitory you are assigned to some still have bunks. You were looking at "Disneyland" (ATC dorms) in the video. "Alcatraz" (RH&T dorms) have the bunks (from other airmen I've talked to).
3:20 No cell phones. My wife was quick to chime in that over 8.5 weeks she got 2 phone calls. Some flights I talked to only got one if they weren't doing well.
6:18 I don't remember what the rope is called either. The green duct tape on the belts was for marking hydration. We had to track our hydration every day on that tape and replace it if it became illegible.
8:40 Air Force also calls them dormitories and the trainees on watch are called Entry Controllers or ECs.
9:40 The clipboards are typically used for making better, tighter beds, but just for trainees who needed the crutch. We made better beds, faster, without them. Learn to do without them.
10:13 I was part of a male flight, but I don't think the female trainees had to have their hair in a bun for PT. The rest of the day their hair would be up according to dress code.
11:30 We could wear watches at all time. Definitely no Subway on Fridays. Our flight earned one "base liberty" where we had 2 hours to go to the BX, eat fast food and be back to the dorm.
13:50 Not drill instructors, MTIs (Military Training Instructors). The one you were looking at is a Blue Rope, which means he is one of the top 10% of all MTIs at Basic Military Training (BMT).
14:49 Trainees, not airmen recruits. Once they graduate BMT they can finally be called Airmen. Any that you saw actually eating Subway or Papa John's were either on their 1 base liberty, in Tech School, or breaking the rules and risking getting recycled a couple of weeks.

Few questions they had answered. Air Force gets three 15 min phone calls throughout all of basic training which is pretty standard across all branches. We got one 2 hour base liberty during our fourth week which is what he was referring to when he said he would see trainees at Popeyes or subway. The clipboards are not a checklist but instead used to tuck the sheets and blankets in tighter and to make hospital corners. As far as bunk beds go there are older barracks where the dormitory is bunk beds but the new dormitories( the ones shown in the video) are all single beds. Hope this helps

The clipboards are generally used to make the beds tighter. It’s not for a checklist

  • @senecalinder
    @senecalinder Před 4 lety +11

Trainees get issued uniforms. They prepay for necessary items for studying etc. Cell phones are given only once a week minimum 15 min. Field training is called the BEAST. They have obstacles, but none all that difficult. More cardio stressful than anything. Low crawling uphill is more cardio challenging than most think. They ensure all instructors are authorized to enter. The clipboards are to assist with bed making (Not necessary). They make beds as a team but not necessary. Air Force standards woman can have hair down for PT. You can wear watches. You can't go to BX and get subway UNLESS you are on base liberty or town pass as a reward for graduating or excelling beyond expectations. You don't always yell as a drill instructor to make a point. Positive reinforcement and negative feedback is used in tandem.

I love that you finally did a video to rep my branch LMFAO. I thought id give some insight on some things you guys were confused about in the video. 1st we used clipboards to make our beds as crisp as possible, it was kind of like a cheat tool. 2nd At BMT you had to earn your cellphones and when you did, it would only be for a phone call between 5-20 minutes depending on what your flight did I.E my flight only got 3 phone calls during BMT. 3rd, yes we did get to go on BX runs/base passes again if your flight earned them. The MTI at the end of the video is solid, but not all of them are as nice/tame compared to him. It really just depends on the person/day. At BMT we are encouraged the help one another (wingman conept) so if you finished your details/beds before everyone else you are expected to to find someone to help or you got ROASTED. During the mid video they're at BEAST week and they didnt show all of the obstacle course , but that battle raddle is heavy asf. I love the videos and love you both. Keep it up!

@@rhett4959 There is really no ME in the Air Force. You would first have to graduate in a college to become a ME, then join the AF as an officer and do some ME work in the AF. You can enlist in the AF and take after work classes to become a ME. You will have to enlist in some job that required some mechanical background to help you understand what a ME does. Good luck to you, always work hard and Aim High.

Not sure if anyone commented this but the reason the have backpacks filled with stuff is because the night you get there (after you’ve done all the paperwork stuff) you get that backpack issued to you which has everything you’ll need throughout basic for example shampoo, writing utensils, notebooks, towels, mesh bags for laundry etc.

Also just to clarify we didnt get our phones on the weekends you get it I believe third week and 6th week of training for about 10-15 min and it’s only to check bank info bills and calling relatives nothing more then you place them all in a bin and get them back when you graduate. Also the very beginning is arrival night they already have pre-made bags that you receive at the reception building that has everything you’ll need to last the first three weeks of training haircuts are usually later that week. And the BMT trainees you saw at the BX were in liberty pass you get one base liberty pass when in basic training unless your flight does extremely well and if your MTI is nice he can grant another one.

to make things clear. we did not get our phones every weekend. we had scheduled phone calls to keep our families updated on graduation. we also did not get subway on Friday. the only way to get any fast food while in basic training was to receive base liberty for outstanding performance. which is really rare especially in Alcatraz.

If you saw them in subway it’s because our last week there it’s called “airman’s week” where it’s a transition week to prepare you for tech school. So they give you base liberty after you complete certain things throughout the day. And i never had my phone. I got my phone twice for 15 minutes each to make phone calls home but that was it.

Lackland AFB is in San Antonio, Texas. I read the comments and did not see any after 2028 or there about. July, 1961 I arrived , never less than 100 except at night. When it reached 110, we were supposed to go into our ww2 barracks. No AC, no fans , no screens on the windows, no ceilings, no insulated walls. Out TI would make us fall out for PT. No water bottles or water cooler. We had a drinking fountain with warm water and the water was pumped from a tank containing a lot of salt. Our fatigues were white from being covered with the salt we sweated out. Cell phones had not been invented back then. Our boots were rough skinned leather and they had to be spit shined. We keep our tee shirts and underwear on and washed them when we showered. Our towels and belts had to be rolled so tight that the TI could not see light through them. We had double tier bunks and no one helped you. The blankets had to be so tight that a quarter or cigarette pack would bounce. The tops of tooth paste ,combs, bottoms of boots were inspected each day. If anyone did not past inspection his foot locket was thrown into the shower and filled with water. There was no graduation, The TI tolded us to get the h#ll out of his barracks because a new squadron was moving in that day. My MOS was full and I could not leave with the rest. The TI told me to find another rack in another barracks. I stayed another 3 weeks, until I received orders to report to FT. Lee for combined arms training. In our 6th week of training, if we were on target, we got a" patio break". That was when you were allowed to smoke if you were a smoker. The most fun was when we went on the obstacle course for two weeks and the live fire exercises. Unfortunately one trainee was killed when he raised his head up to far while crawling under the barb wire. A machine gun was firing live ammo at a fixed elevation. The second was killed when he dropped a grenade and the TI could not pick it up fast enough and throw it into the cement lined barrel. I could go on and on. I thought some people might enjoy reading about ancient military training history. Good luck to all. Austen, love your videos. P.S. I'm 79 and still worked 5-6 hrs 7 days a week.

Lackland is the home of Air Force basic training, but it is also home to numerous technical schools where airmen go right after basic. (Security Forces, Services, etc.) So the airman seen at Subway were most certainly not in basic training, but were rather tech school students who had already graduated basic training.
When I was there (in the '90s -- yeah, I'm old), we never got to go anywhere in basic -- with the exception of a couple "base liberty" trips which were nothing more than going out to the BX to buy more toothpaste or soap, or whatever. (The only other liberty we got was the evening of graduation where we were allowed to go off base with our family, who'd flown in for the ceremony, for a couple hours.)
But once you graduate basic, and if you're starting a career field where your technical training is also based at Lackland, you're given some more leeway. Yet you look the same as a recruit -- with the exception of maybe having slightly longer hair. (Same uniform, same E-1 rank for the most part.) I remember myself and others in my tech school squadron always intentionally avoiding the areas of the base where recruits train for fear of being confused by someone (particularly an NCO) as a recruit and getting screamed at for being somewhere we weren't supposed to be. Even though we weren't in basic anymore, we still feared the TIs (drill instructors) and knew they'd be considered right and we considered wrong (which would get back to our tech school instructors) if a negative encounter were to happen.
And since I'm so damned old, I didn't have to worry about cell phones back then. They didn't exist. But all our personal property (basically one carry on bag we arrived with) was taken away and secured in a closet, and only given back to us the night after graduation. I do remember some guys getting their bag back and listening to music on their Walk Mans that night. Our TI (drill instructor) came in and ripped them a little bit -- but not much -- it was the last night we were spending there after all, and I think that's why he went pretty easy on them. But aside from that, we never had possession of anything that wasn't specifically issued to us by the Air Force -- with the exception of toiletries which we had to buy at one of the stores on base.

They show Disney Land which is the new dorms, over in the old dorms we had bunks in half the bay and we only got our phones when our instructors deemed it so and we only had them to call family for like 10- 15 min at most. I got to call maybe 5 times, 1 was to let my family know I arrived and I was told what to say, 2 were calls to family that were given, 1 was for a hurricane so I could make sure my family in Florida was okay, and 1 so that I could tell my family the graduation schedule.
