As with any military service, your journey begins at basic training.
Basic training is tough. You'll be challenged every day, both mentally and physically. You'll be pushed, tested and worked harder than you ever thought possible. But you will graduate confident, knowing you accomplished something you and your family can be proud of.

Reading these comments is pretty awesome. A majority (75+%) never even served in the military yet they want to judge? The Coast Guard isn't a branch designed to fast rope into battle, yet they save lives every single day, stop drug and sex trafficking, rescue drowning victims, recover lost vessels, put out fires at sea...the list goes on. I served with some pretty tough men and I have also had the honor of serving with some very hardened Coasties too. Stand fast before you past judgment. Semper Fi

How correct you are. We all like to bust each others balls about things. It builds camaraderie, however, a civilian talking shit is a no-go. My friend joined the CG and his first op was a gunfight. Its not what you see on television. I love couch potato operators though, they're the best.
Coast Guard saves 10 people everyday and yearly that's incredible!
I retired from the Marine Corps back in 2007. Like most Marines I have been places that you don't find on any travel adds and have done things most people can't comprehend. With that being said, some of the hardest people to ever put on a uniform come from the Coast Guard. If you think they are soft, go jump out of helicopters into open ocean during damn near hurricane force winds for a living and get back to me. If you want to crack jokes about my Navy brothers too, go ahead. I bet none of you would last 48 hours in Field Medical school.

Also, very proud to have witnessed my Marine shipmates tribute to their fallen brothers on Iwo Jima, as we sailed past Mt. Suribachi, during a rain squall. The Marines mustered on the flight deck, in silent formation, as the rain came down and the wind howled, as we sailed past that hallowed ground. I think I can still hear those heroes from the past telling us, "You've got the watch now, make us proud."

you cant really compare aviation survival technicians (rescue swimmers) with the rest of the coast guard as it would be like comparing recon marines to the rest of the Marine Corps fleet. jumping from a helicopter is a specialty mos that could be comparative to special forces, recon, or any other elite operating force and there are very few rescue swimmers in the Coast Guard as they have a very high attrition rate, somewhere upwards of 80%. the rest of the puddle pirates are stationed on small boats much like the navy only for shorter timespans, usually a few weeks or attached to a aircraft squadron as mechanics. I will give props to them as what they do is quite a feat but they are an elite force albeit a small portion of the coast guard

Ok why are people comparing the Marines to the Coast Guard? They have two completely different missions. The Coast Guard is designed to stop piracy near American shores, intercept illicit cargo on ships, rescue lives, etc. The Marines are designed to be landing troops attached to the Navy. They're designed to invade from the sea, kill the enemy, and deliver humanitarian aide in a timely matter.
Because the Marines and Coast Guard both really hate the Navy!

I did 4 years in the US Navy and then 21 years in the US Coast Guard, and I retired in March 2014. The US Coast Guard has taught me a lot, and helped me be a better person! Semper Paratus! 🇺🇸 Never give up!
Seriously, to everyone bickering in the comments about how boot camp is easy or hard for whatever branch.
Why do you actually care?! All of the branches are different which means they all have different training.
Just because one is easier It does not make that branch weaker, lazier, less important.
Every branch is brave every branch is strong and EVERY BRANCH IS IMPORTANT!

I see a lot of disrespect and hate in these posts. Seems like to me, when you strap boots on for your country, regardless of branch of service, it should be respected. Whenever there is a maritime emergency, who gets called to the scene? Coast Guard! USCG boot camp is training for their mission. Not the mission of other services. If that were the case, then we'd only have one service.

+primaryification Judging by your comment I can tell you either are or wish you could be a Marine by the way you could not read and/or understand my comment. It's okay, I'll dumb it down for you. Boot camp is mission oriented, meaning you train for what you do. I'm not denying the Marines are good at doing what they do. Hell, you can train a dog to do what they do so I guess being human, they should be good at it. I'm simply stating that the USCG boot camp is geared towards a life saving service. Let's be honest. Quick question for you though. Being such a hard Marine, how did you come across a USCG video?
I was a Marine who went over to the Coast Guard to become a Rescue Swimmer and I can say without hesitation that the Coast Guard training I went through was brutal, Rescue Swimmer "A" School makes the Marine Corps Boot Camp seem like a walk in the park. I do not care how tough my fellow Devil Dogs feel they are, until you have experienced the Hell of Rescue Swimmer Training you can not understand or appreciate just how damn hard it is, we had 7 trainees myself included in our class and we graduated 3 of us after 24 weeks of pure hell the attrition rate is 85-90%, and I was the only prior service person to make it, we had a few other former Marines and an former Army guy and they were unable to go the distance.

I spent two summers in Cape May and I would watch the Coast Guard train on the beaches EARLY in the morning from the shopped where I worked. VERY impressive in every aspect. These men and women deserve SO much more credit than they are given. They work hard, and do an extremely thankless job.
Find yourself alone in the ocean and I'm sure you will be ecstatic to see the Coast Guard. They have their function and they do it very well. Semore Fi :)

I agree. The 17 people I've helped save during my time in back in '85-86 are probably still glad we picked' em up.
Bill Seidel what would commercial fisherman do with out you guys. Only law to enforce all of USA federal waters and rescue us when regulations make us fish dangerous weather. And the boys that board you offshore are trained different. Automatic weapon full suite and no bullshit

You do realize you have to take a very difficult physical test and then get interviewed before you actually get accepted into training, you can't just join.

Coasties are awesome. They've been protecting US shores for centuries, and have infinite bravery. Anyone who served in any branch of the US military has every right to be proud of themselves. Criticizing others is completely unnecessary and in my eyes only shows their own self doubt... thereby making themselves and their entire branch look bad.
If you want some amazing stories from an actual USCG rescue swimmer, read Brotherhood of the Fin by Gerald Hoover. It's totally worth it.

Chris Coast Guard does more LE stuff than the Navy. In the Navy you'll end up being in shore patrol or guarding the brig on some ship. I loved the Navy, but if you're gonna be in the LE, Coast Guard is the best. Hint of advice, get used to people yelling at you to get you stressed in case of war type situations, and make sure you are as physically fit as possible before going into bootcamp. That's the best advice I can give you.
Jazz Man Thanks man. Fortunately I still have a couple years before I can join, so I'll hopefully be prepared by then.
Chris Oh yeah, get used to being fast and not dragging you feet. Attention to detail will be the key and learn how to use hand guns and long guns if you can before you go to boot camp. Especially stripping the guns down and cleaning them and putting them back together as fast as possible.

The beauty of the USCG is that we get all prior service Marines, Air Force, Navy and Army and we come together as one. You really won't see much of that anywhere else. We welcome all those that want to represent the mission of honor, RESPECT and devotion to duty.

My uncle Ed was a career man in the Coast Guard. He was stationed in Alaska and was doing the chopper rescues. i am so proud of him. The Coasties are sometimes are not thought to be as tough the other branches. But they are. Go Coasties!!

no armed forces branch is harder nor better. All have their own reason, uses and purposes, so i respect every branch. Coastguard may not be frontlines and active infantry but they play a very important rol, in our Country, protecting our coasts and actually helping out in their own territory. I had a friend who chose coadt guard, the rest of them chose either marines or army and acted stronger, tougher and more important than him and he was crushed by that, but stuck it through, and is alive and disciplined and less screwed up with ptsd than the others, some of them were killed in battle.

Massive respect for the men and women of the Coast Guard! I spent 16 years as a U.S. Marine Corps infantryman (medically retired Gunnery Sergeant) and what I see in this video is discipline and professionalism. Semper Fidelis and Semper Paratus!

I went to MCRD and that was easy in my opinion. the first week or two will be the hardest then you just skate from there. boot camp is the easiest thing you'll do in the military especially the Marine Corps. I don't like to rag on other beaches because we are all family, but y'all are gonna have a skate time, don't even worry

I went thru boot camp in 1986, it was pretty tough mentally and a times physically. Served 5 more years. I would do it again in a minute. Love my country and all other branches of service.
Every branch is different and every branch of the military is needed, no need to make threats on here or ridicule each other.
I'm reading a lot of comments of one service being better, tougher, more bad ass than the others. Truth be known if you have worn the uniform of any branch of the United States Armed Forces, you are part of just 7% of the citizens of our great nation. Bad ass? Hell, you stepped up, volunteered to give your life for this country if need be. Be proud, but be humble. Many people have given everything. Never forget. Remember it's called joining the Service, because we serve others. I retired after 29 yrs in the Coast Guard. I miss it everyday. Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty. Semper Paratus!

Class November 1985. Back in the day blanket parties were part of the norm, no worries of becoming soft. Mentally the toughest with the Marine Corps right behind us, physically second toughest right behind the Marines. In great company with the Marines if I may say. How times have changed. Good times. I went through in 1995. Some things have changed. I ended up doing 21 years of service. I would do it again in a heartbeat. We had some tough CCs back then and after 9/11 we recalled a YNC from the 1970s and I can tell you that 1970s boot camp YNC was the toughest lady I have ever seen and the stories she had were amazing. Even she said today’s Coast Guard was soft. I agree and disagree. Anyway glad to see this next generation of folks coming through. Semper Paratus!
I'm looking at the comments, seeing a lot of hate. I want to clarify that each branch isn't designed to be tougher/weaker than the other. Each branch is made specifically for a purpose that was intended, not to put themselves above the others. Remember, we all serve in the military and for different reasons. I trained mostly with flippers because my job was to be a diver, not a rescuer. Just saying

Marine's are just proud to be Marines. We don't mean to put other service branches down. We are taught to be proud from day one. I've met Marines from 20 to 80 years of age. They all have respect for the Corps and always are proud to be Marines. Semper Fi....

I absolutely agree with you as a former SGT from the 10th Mountain Division. As for those who talk trash about the men and women in the Any military uniform that has not gone through or served this country. You shouldn’t be saying anything at all. Just remember this. As you watch these videos this is what they want you to see. If you want to know more then see your local recruiter and join the military. Then you will see what it is about. I love all my brothers and sisters in uniform.

Come ready is the operative words! Our son Daniel graduated from college with his kinesiology degree and maintained his strength and desire to strong of mind and physical ability. He did well in basic and was promoted to Yoman his second week. I could go on and on but the point is to "Come ready". Great opportunity. It's not half bad when you do graduate and get your assignment.

Trying to be as serious as possible. I'm 12. I will be 13 in 5 months and I'm already researching what it takes to become part of the Coast Guard. I have been working on it for 3 hours and I would say I have a lot of very helpful stuff typed up. It's what I have always wanted to do since I was 5. My dad also extremely wants me to do this and I am very proud to say that I will be doing it no matter what. I've been looking up videos of how boot camp is and with how much physical things they have to do I've already started because one, it will help me become stronger so I can be prepared as I can for it. I know it's possible I won't make it but I will try my best to become a part of it. Anyways, the second reason is because it will help me now with my dads work since I help out over the weekends and my dad and I need the strength so it can keep the place going so he can have money and have a home and food. Again, I'm proud to say I will be trying my very best to become part of the Coast Guard.

Great video. It brought back many memories. I was in the Coast Guard in 1966 for 6 years. I left as an first class electricians mate. My boot camp was 13 weeks and there was still a lot of yelling, calisthenics, swimming, marching etc. Loved those 2 hour PT. Not. A lot of good memories, it is a good thing pain cannot be recalled. The best branch of the service!!!

These recruits are by far the smartest based on their choice of service. They wont get sand between their toes from Islamic lands AND they will be stationed where people appreciate their presence. The American people!

I was born in USCG Training Center Cape May and I grew up in USCG Training Center Alameda. I went through USAF BMT in October 1981 in San Antonio, TX.

I've read about people saying that boot camp was the worst, and you couldnt pay them to go back, but I have also seen people saying that it was amazing in many ways. Both say it was the hardest thing they've ever done. I think that boot camp is really how you make it. The people yelling at you are trying to prepare you to save lives. Its not a cake walk. At the end of the day, they're trying to help you.
I came out in the 1970s when any military service was a no-go. So I went thru college in business school. If I could do it again, I think I would have gone into the USCG. I am a sailor, and have never been rescued by the USCG (thank God), but have been checked on by them many times. Thank you USCG!
I would love to join the coast guard when I come of age. I was initially going to because of the paid college but now I see it and I would love to be toughened and protect my country

Boot camp is hell 43 people in my company didn't make it and also as a non-rate you will be doing dishes and a lot a cleaning. Be ready to begin at the very bottom. It starts to get better when you make third class. Good luck! Semper Paratus

Foxtrot Alpha, I went through Tracen Cape May in June 1974. Thanks for the memories. I was in Sierra Company under CC Chief Jesse Smith. He was tough, but fair. The quadrangle still looks the same. Graduation was always special and the liberty in Wildwood was awesome. I left and went to the Cutter Hamilton (WHEC-715) out of Boston. It was the best time of my life.

when I was in the Navy I spent a three year tour at fleet training group we went on all the ships in our designated area doing damage control training and inspections , we also trained the coast guard ships and I always enjoyed doing stuff with the coast guard they were always ready to train and always had a good attitude
I just enlisted today in the army. I’m going to do a few years in the Army then switch to the coast guard.
I remember going back to the squad bay and our mattresses were thrown all over the place. Also, there was shaving cream over every bulkhead. We had a short amount of time to fix it (which wasn't possible). A few minutes later my whole company had to drag our mattresses out to the parade field and then back again multiple times. Good times.

Every branch of service has a BMT program. The Coast Guard is part of the service branch during wartime when they serve under the direction of the US Navy. The Coast Guard video above is a toned down recruiting message designed to attract a different kind of service person. Not everyone can become a Marine, not every one wants to be a Marine. Personally speaking when I graduated from high school in '77 I did not have many career options. I was an abysmal student and knew college was not an option. The Vietnam War had only ended during the early part of the decade and it was a safe bet that another war wasn't looming. I enlisted in the army and after two years of being just another 11B doing calisthenics everyday I wanted more. So I cross-transferred to the air force and spent 35 years having the time of my life. Today's BMT program is soft among all branches. BMT today is spent more on feelings, and rights, cuddling, and embracing the notion that everyone is equal. And perhaps for many people that Utopian idea makes for a well-rounded soldier. However, make no mistake the enemy we face today does not play by the rules of engagement, there are no rules, nothing is out-of-bounds. So when one decides to enlist in any branch of the service today, be prepared to fight, and accept dying. This is not a movie or a video game.

How does what you do after graduating boot camp have any bearing on how difficult basic training is? Coast Guard boot camp is, from what prior servicemen have told me during basic training, the third most difficult behind marines and navy seals. Just watch a few videos of the other services' training and then judge.

Though I never served in the military, this is a really good video and it goes with what I read about the Coast Guard. It's an armed service and more. Boot Camp is tough....it has to be. It's very serious business and just as important. Another thing I can recall reading is that boot camp teaches you how to do it and the makes sure you are able. This video also confirms another perception I had about the Coast Guard. It's best that you get ready as best you can.
We had 2 Prior Army and 1 Prior Marine quit when I went through Coast Guard Boot in 2001.....This shit is no joke!....one of the ARMY Dudes told me he was gonna fake a knee injury to get out he said "F" this shit. He said he wasn't the physical part of it it was the way the played with you mentally he couldn't take anymore. Which for being 3 weeks in freaked a bunch of us out cuz if the ARMY dude cant make it how the hell am I gonna make it.....But I did! BEST 4 YRS OF MY LIFE!.......and if anyone complains that the Coast Guard dont do shit I cal BS cuz I was in a firefight like bullets flying everywhere in open waters 2 weeks out of boot camp and got shot at at least once a month for the next 4 yrs in the Caribbean! Arrr the Pirate Life for ME!
Coast Guard basic training seems more fear-induced than what I see in the Navy boot camp videos. Most "navy receiving boot camp" videos have the instructors firmly instructing the recruits but not yelling like this.

Im 16 years old but im very confused on what to join and what will give me better options also cause my Uncle was a Marine and my Grandfather was in the Army and my Cousin was Airforce and they keep throwing papers in my face for each branch of the military i would love to join the military but i need help so please tell me.

This looks more intense than my Army basic training. Of course, I didn't go through infantry basic training, I went through the softer MOS basic training in 2006. Much respect for those that complete Coast Guard boot camp.

Back in the day, new recruits weren't issued much of anything the first week of boot camp except for some old worn out fatigues. The budget didn't afford the waste of uniforms and accessories for recruits that were washed out in the first week.

My nephew went to USCG Boot Camp in Cape May. He thought being the Coast Guard the boot camp should be pretty easy. He said it was the greatest wake up call in his life, and couldn’t see a Marine or Army boot camp being any harder.
U.S. Navy veteran here 1968-1972, served in Vietnam. The Coast Guard is no joke and anybody who thinks that is a fool. Their boot camp is the second hardest after the U.S. Marines. Their jobs are usually more physically demanding than the U.S. Navy unless you include UDT and Seals. Members of one branch of the U.S.military do not hate members of another branch as somebody mentioned below. Sometimes there is a friendly rivalry, but that's all it is, we all respect each other and the different jobs we have to do. If I was a young person today I would probably join the Coast Guard.
