Simon, Thanks for this feature on Spurs' perilous financial straits at this time, seemingly made worse by Gazza's rush of blood in the cup final which could have ended his career and cost him his stint in Italy. Difficult to recall so much through the haze of time, but thankfully both club and player revived from their problems.
I shudder to think what would have happened if he’d been successful in buy Manchester United in 1984. We would have been in a lot of trouble!! I’m glad Martin Edwards had the sense to tell him to sling his hook.
If only one of Gazza’s teammates had got hold of him after the first horrible tackle on Gary Charles. Got hold of him and calmed him down. He’s was too hyped up. Such a shame though. He was never the same player again. Certainly not the same player who almost single handedly got Spurs to the cup final.
I ended up becoming a Liverpool fan but this was my formative year and I didn't know about PLCs, debt, or even league positions. But mom loved Gary Lineker and so Tottenham were automatically a class outfit.
I was surprised that it got that bad financially. Spurs were one of the ‘ big 5 ‘ and surely there were many rich Spurs fans who would have got them out of trouble. I must admit I didn’t like Hummel sportswear. It always felt pretty cheaply made in my opinion. The formation of the Premier league happened at the right time for Spurs and Sugar was the main reason why Sky were the successful bidder for the television rights to broadcast live premier league football.
@@simonmaskell365 that's bollocks we are one of the richest clubs In England they aren't £1-1 billion in debt I don't know where you get your info but he must be a right carrot
@@simonmaskell365 obviously back in the CL now (I appreciate that you are not a clairvoyant) but that debt is at extremely preferential rates. Daniel Levy knows what he is doing on that front.
He's always had the image of a loveable rogue. The Del Boy of football. Did he make some deals that could be considered questionable?? Possibly. Maybe deals that benefited him financially that could have been considered a conflict of interest. That's all though. I don't think he was doing anything illegal though.

Thanks for uploading the documentary. I remember seeing it at the time.
The only positive thing I could ever say about Alan Sugar is at least he wasn’t Robert Maxwell.
Great comment.

Steve Watson went on to have a good career in the game with Newcastle and Everton.

18 million pound debt - nothing in today's game.
Wouldn't even buy a lower division player.
@@duckjive1 it was. It was a worrying time. I can remember them having collections at the ground.
The reason they sold Gazza.
18m debt! It’s now over a billion, and no bother.
But its repayable in 30-40 years time, and with very very low interest rates. People who know about such things say its a great deal.
When scholar says European clubs can take a million per game now spurs take one and a half million in food and drink alone
Spurs are 1.1 Billion in debt not in the Ch Lge and not winning Silverware

So was Alan Sugar that bad?
Only one answer to that

He saved the club
EL TEL was always a bit dodgy.
