Simon,
Thanks for providing this feature. All very complicated and impossible to remember the details now over 30 years later- it was complicated even then! I know of no-one else in football who divides opinion as much as Terry Venables. Personally I think he was a good football coach and along with Glenn Hoddle was probably the most innovative coach England have had in recent years. I would point out that he was the overwhelming choice of people in the game to get that position. I think no verdict could be given on these business dealings without hearing his side of the story.
Despite Bashir presenting it, that's a surprisingly good programme. See False Messiah by Mihir Bose, which backs this up. And of course Venables went down badly in court.
bullshit in the first 2 minutes: he 'conquered Britain' (WTF?) and then 'won the European Cup' (they mean the Spanish championship) and was 'crowned El Tel' (by the English newspapers).
Venables was building what would have been a very good team when he was sacked - at the time he was still one of the most innovative coaches in the game. On the other hand, becos he seemed to be up to his neck in some of the dodgy dealings that went on at the club, if he'd still been the manager at the time of the FA investigation it's almost certain they would have relegated us as a punishment. We only got the reprieve from the 12 points deduction becos sugar was able to show he'd acted against venables by dismissing him when the scandal broke
Del Boy..
Spurs fans moan about enic running the club but God help us if they hadn't stepped in we could have folded
He should have stuck to management which he was quite good at
@@markbarker6739 we wouldn't have folded under Sugar. Are you sure that you're not thinking of when Sugar bought the club from Scholar?
@@alanberkeley7282 definitely Alan.
RIP Terry Venables 1943 - 2023.
The row between Sugar and Venables put us back by well over a decade.
If Venables hadn't left, we would've likely had an FA Cup ban, a league points reduction, and massive financial penalties; if Venables hadn't been expelled with his underpayment allegations, Sugar might not have been able to let us off the hook all that easily, instead, here we are today with a financially sturdy Tottenham (excluding the occasional terrible footballing decisions both Levy and Sugar have done on the field over the years).

What was the situation with the Dyson report, where the BBC admitted Bashir had used false documents in this or the other Venables programme?
Terry venables mega crook
He did not win european cup with barcelona.
Nearly did, unfortunately fell short 😔
He won La Liga with Barcelona
Lost on penalties to Steaua Bucharest in the final in 1985/86. Bucharest had a very good team at the time. I think they were Ceaucescu's team......
They were all at it for the 💵..... The days of bungs.
.. expect Arthur Daley & Tel to appear.
I turned it off after bashir appeared...........
He got the England job a decade too late..
The appointment of that glorified spiv as manager cost Tottenham 15 years
really ? i thought Tottenham fans loved him
This one CANT STAND the bastard. Most overrated manager of the last 50 years. Patricks Collins late of the mail on Sunday called him the greatest tactician since Rommel. great shout
@@dlamiss yes agree
Whatever Vendables was or wasn’t..Compared to that Swiss manager that came after…he was Brian Clough in comparison!
Venables was a good manager - I don't think that anyone would dispute that - he was a particularly good man manager but he strayed outside of his area of expertise and that was his error. He wanted to be a businessman but that wasn't his forte.
I wonder if the Swiss bloke ever got a refund for his London Underground ticket?? Or did he claim it on expenses??
Venables never won the european cup he got to the final
Spot on. They lost penalties.. not scoring a single one
In 1985/86. Lost to Steaua Bucharest on penalties in the final after a very forgettable and boring 120 minutes of football.
Martin Bashir hatchet job? Terry, call your lawyers now.
Most ardent of bbc viewers will think again about any programme edited and presented by Bashir
Not so sure that they would on this occasion.
Ever time we get a good manager we sack him..
Nuno is a good Manager, so you better keep him.
@@nick777forde lol
Bashir the lying chancer who conned Poor Diane into giving that infamous interview. You should be in Jail Bashir.
He should be in prison!
Who? Martin Bashir? Yes, he should be. Venables should be onto his lawyers right now.
You haven't proved he abused his position, I never believed he did anyway. You loved a story and needed to back it with defamation.
He is just a business man which doesn't go hand in hand with being the manager of the team he is involved with in business,
But many of us work for companies that we are able to buy shares for
Correct. And hasn't Bashir just been exposed as a crook, a sleazy falsifier of documents and information?
He was banned from being a company director for seven years by a high court judge. The department of Trade and Industry said bribery lying deception were involved The Judge agreed. Looks like he abused his position to me.
@@dlamiss you don't seem to be someone who tries to understand a situation. That my friend is where maturity begins
@@dlamiss Based on what? The 'testimony' of disgruntled former employees and the 'evidence' of exposed liars like Bashir? Sorry, please read

@@Clydesider711 Based on a bit more than your own summing up I would say. If I were Venables I would have contested the judges decision, wouldnt you funny enough he didnt. How about if I offer you a little reading Try False Messiah from Mihir Bose. You may change your mind.
