    Simon,
Thanks for providing this feature. All very complicated and impossible to remember the details now over 30 years later- it was complicated even then! I know of no-one else in football who divides opinion as much as Terry Venables. Personally I think he was a good football coach and along with Glenn Hoddle was probably the most innovative coach England have had in recent years. I would point out that he was the overwhelming choice of people in the game to get that position. I think no verdict could be given on these business dealings without hearing his side of the story.

Despite Bashir presenting it, that's a surprisingly good programme. See False Messiah by Mihir Bose, which backs this up. And of course Venables went down badly in court.

bullshit in the first 2 minutes: he 'conquered Britain' (WTF?) and then 'won the European Cup' (they mean the Spanish championship) and was 'crowned El Tel' (by the English newspapers).

Venables was building what would have been a very good team when he was sacked - at the time he was still one of the most innovative coaches in the game. On the other hand, becos he seemed to be up to his neck in some of the dodgy dealings that went on at the club, if he'd still been the manager at the time of the FA investigation it's almost certain they would have relegated us as a punishment. We only got the reprieve from the 12 points deduction becos sugar was able to show he'd acted against venables by dismissing him when the scandal broke

If Venables hadn't left, we would've likely had an FA Cup ban, a league points reduction, and massive financial penalties; if Venables hadn't been expelled with his underpayment allegations, Sugar might not have been able to let us off the hook all that easily, instead, here we are today with a financially sturdy Tottenham (excluding the occasional terrible footballing decisions both Levy and Sugar have done on the field over the years).

Venables was a good manager - I don't think that anyone would dispute that - he was a particularly good man manager but he strayed outside of his area of expertise and that was his error. He wanted to be a businessman but that wasn't his forte.
