“I needed more Terry Venables in my life” what a great quote. Gary Neville is always so good at saying the right things. Well done Gary
Euro 96 was basically the second summer of love. Such good times, man.
Thanks for the memories, El Tel.
Spot on
I cannot believe that was 27 years ago!! I was just 18 at the time, and could not get the Lightning Seeds tune ' 3 Lions' out of my brain. An amazing team, I just wish he had stayed on for longer.
Yeah great memories !
@@user-js3cr6wu7gI was 16 how is it that long ago what a summer that was anything was possible it seemed... Now middle aged and still not won anything!
Correct. Best year of my life. Footy (Liverpool), house music, oasis , 18 years old. No social media. What a summer.
Venables was ahead of his time. Seriously, three decades ahead. He is the kind of coach we need for today's generation of world class talent (Bellingham, Kane, Stones) who can play in multiple positions and aren't scared of the ball. He is the kind of big personality we need to let players flourish and not be frightened of the media when it fails. Wonderful tribute from Gary , and may Terry Venables rest in peace.
What he would do with our team now is something I would love to see.
The Dutch did it in the 70s lol
And the Austrians did it in the 1930s@@petermackinnon7551 ...what's your point? I'm speaking of English coaches.
He was way ahead of his time, playing the high press was unusual back then but he did and now it's all the rave.....30 years later. That shows you how ahead of his time he really was, never forget what he gave us at Euro 96 lived him to bits. RIP Sir El Tel
Anyone but Southgate
Just hearing Gary Neville mentioning the names takes me back. Euro 96 was beautiful🥹
Didn't usually like Gary but have changed my mind.Wonderful comments so well delivered. Thank you Gary.
R.I.P El Tel what a great England manager and never heard a bad word about the guy on or off the pitch..I was 17 when Euro 96 was on and its still the best I've seen England play in 44 years I've been alive and not just that but how he had the group together with a good atmosphere and no bullshit..Tel was of the oldskool and as he showed..its the best school.
England have had three world class managers. Sir Alf, Sir Bobby Robson and Terry Venables. If only he had more time in the job who knows what we could have achieved. Euro 96 has that nostalgia, Terrys tactics and brand of football captured the country's imagination. We didn't win it but for that one summer, football came home!
RIP El Tel
Hear hear 👍
Southgate?
I'll never forget Euro 96 for as long as I live..I lived in London at the time and I remember my friend and I drove up to Trafalgar Square after we humiliated the Dutch and I swear.. I've NEVER seen such elation among England fans and I still maintain that if Gazza had longer studs he would've scored THAT goal against Germany and the trophy that THAT team and Manager deserved would've come home.. Thanks for those memories El Tel.. R.I.P 🙏
Great tribute from Gary
Went to number of games at euro 96 witj me old man what a summer great times , tel was best england manager of my lifetime
Euro 96 was my first ever memorable tournament. My 12th birthday was during that tournament. Remember sitting up at night watching that hammering we gave the Netherlands with my Dad, to this day the greatest England performance I have ever seen. Thay summer was unreal. El Tel was behind it. What a bloke. He would have a field day with todays team.
Yes - I say this all the time to my mates - the best we’ve ever played
I was 10 when Euro 96 was here.
Almost 30 years on, i still remember the elation and joy that was created by El Tel.
The Scotland game, the Netherlands rout, that tense quater final vs Spain followed by a win on penalties.
If Gazza got anything on to that ball, we'd be in that final and probably won.
We seemed to go backwards after that. Hoddle was good, maybe unlucky in 1998, though it wasnt the same.
Rip Tel you'll be much missed
I was 14 in 1966 and 44 in '96 and to be honest, the later was far mor exciting then '66. RIP legend!!!!
I'm so jealous you got to see us win a world cup. Must have been some feeling!
@@JoshuaCadman We were on the Isle of White the week before and left early and got back to Edmonton about 2hrs before K.O.
Renaissance man😂 always seemed so positive and fun to be around, wish we had more like him😢 rip tel

14 during euro 96, the football, the flags, the song, the style, the vibe. What a summer. Thanks for the memories El Tel
I wish we could bottle the fragrance of Euro 96. The feel good atmosphere during that tournament was incredible.
Also the culture at the time, the music , special year
RIP, legends never die
Rip Terry!!! I was 10 when Euro 96 happened and it was truly an amazing experience!! The first tournament I really remember!!! I loved everything about it and fell in love with football!!! A true legend of the game!!!
I was born in July 86 and turned 10 shortly after the tournament ended. Remember the feeling he gave the country at Euro 96. Such sad news
@Jows65 I was born November 86 so was turning 10 😁. Yeah I remember the news myself and was sad to hear it!! Not gonna lie cried when we lost to Germany on pens!! If we got to final we would of won that hands down!!
@@danielpardoe2554 this 💯. Hope Southgate can make as proud. I actually support him in general but he does have shortcomings compared to previous managers. Let's hope for the best
Ive been saying the same thing for years best English manager ever RIP ❤
RIP Terry, your time in charge of England was the most enjoyable of my life. Best English manager ever with Robson close behind.
💯
Alf Ramsey thanks you.
@@DanFernandesBenficaSaint I think it’s in his lifetime so I suspect Ramsey was before that
💯
Top coach. Top man. My first proper football memory in euro 96. RIP El Tel.
I’m coming up for my 70 birthday and euro 96 is my best football memory it was just fantastic and it was all down to El Tel thank you very much Terry R I P 🏴🏴♥️♥️
Amazing tribute! RIP Terry Venables
My first tournament i watched England in as kid (usa 94 first tournament)Euro 96 had kids in playground reacting what they saw on the pitch ,the hot summer, brit pop, Brian Moore on itv ,motty and Barry Davies bbc , wembley drowned out with god save the queen .Terry Venables doing his thing as loveable down to earth geezer that we have ever had running england .RIP Terry
Crazy to think Southgate will be going into his 4th tournament as England manager! And Venables only had Euro ‘96. Two years in charge. Would have been interested to see how he would have done at France ‘98. Great manager! Enjoyed him as a pundit as well.
Give El Tel a young Owen and Beckham and its ALL OVER.. Seriously
@@simonforrest2522don't even daft. They weren't better than Holland, Brazil or France.
Over the midst of time, we forget what a fantastic England manger Terry Venables was, RIP Sir.
That tournament is what took football into the stratosphere in this country. It was a huge turning point, and what made it a turning point was the nature of Terry Venables mindset and approach.
It wasn't about watching England winning - we didn't win - it was all about the 'how' in terms of how Venables went about things, the positive mindset, the tactically progressive nature of the football played, and then the visible self-belief that the confidence to do that instilled in both the team and the country. Non-football fans got on for the ride, and haven't got off.
Contrast that with Southgate's tactical timidity, with let's-face-it a far stronger group of players. The difference a coach can make is immense.
I met him at qpr v Cardiff 1971, it was, a draw, I remember him and Rodney marsh, the buggers held me down, and took me over the bridge from Cardiff to Bristol. I was skint.. We had to walk miles. Still esteem for the man. Rip terry
Why don’t we hear these stories when they’re alive 😢.. RIP Terry
R.I.P Terry Venables. Magnificent person and manager.
So many great tributes to Terry
Venables had almost won England the Euro 1996 and qualified the Socceroos Australia to the 1998 World Cup, while the team played in the 1997 Confederations Cup Final.
What a great achievement for such two Commonwealth rivals with him.
RIP El Tel.
Love listening to tales from players like this about managers and other players . Sad circumstances unfortunately though to be speaking on him
Nice one Gary, always enjoy your commentary, and none more so than hearing you speak of Terry. Cheers.
Venables was ahead of other English and british coaches of the time. Tactically cultured, played a variety of systems and formations (famously England's "christmas tree" formation at euro 96, where he played two attacking midfielders behind a lone striker. He set England up to play attractive football and wasn't afraid to adapt his system to the strengths of his players unlike most british managers back then who rigidly stuck to 442 and played long ball.
I had his board game as a kid "The Manager" He was a gifted football man who was respected by everyone. Rest easy EL Tel
Legendary manager and coach, he was absolutely brilliant in football and a wonderful man. May he rest in peace.
Love listening to Gary Neville.
Spurs legend he'll never be forgotten FA cup winner as a player and manager for us
Gary has the gift of the gab..
Sadly sadly missed. I loved him at Spurs, oh and he won us a trophy.
Thank you, Gary.
R.I.P Terry !
Down to earth, organized, tactical, calm and opened to Players ,let them to know each to know their abilities!
Great Coach ,he could stayed long for '98,he wouldnt sack Gazza and Euro 2000.
RIP
Euro 96 was the best time as an England fan. Incredible summer, Terry will be missed.
TV had played at Every level for England. Sad loss, loved him as a pundit on telly .
Thanks Mr Venables R.I.P Sir
As a Qpr fan Venables will always be a legend, AS Gary said he was ahead of his time could play different systems and was tactically on another level, Sadly the FA as now want yes men PC and will always be the same. Nothing against Southgate but he's non league compared to TV
Fascinating
I love Ronnie, what a player and what a legend.
Roy was almost in awe of him, respect from one top pro to another.
Excellent episode.
God bless Terry you were one of the best rip sir thank you for all the memories you gave us 👏👏🙏🕯
As a young lad watching Terry Venables England in euro 96. That was the best summer I ever had growing up. Thanks El Tel LEGEND RIP 🏴
As a scot i always admired "El Tel, fantastic manager at club level and with England, , great memories, R.I.P sir and prayers for your family
Euro 96 - like no other time. Thank you Tel
Apart from WINNING The World Cup in 1966 but Terry was fantastic in all respects.
thoughts and prayers go out
Alwus remember an interview with George Graham and Terry venables and graham was saying how when they were young players at Chelsea the whole 1st team squad knew venables knew more than the manager and was a better coach even at that age
Look how Venables looked after Gazza. It was fantastic. Gazza put everything into his football in 1996, even though he wasnt fit. That was everything.
Nod to Don Howe, anyone who’s played championship manager 99 knows why. Probably the best staff member on the game.
Great guy 🏴👍
wish el Tel had got the 98 world cup aswell 96 we were a great squad
I remember when he came to Barça. Living in the region then & the Spanish was not nice to start but wow.... that man knew how to read footage tape and then relay training befote him they kept loosing.
El Tel was never given the accolade as an amazing manager until his death.
That is really sad. I have always listed him with his vision he had.
R.I.P El Tel. ❤️
Just wished he stayed as England manager after 96' but something g tells me Tel wasn't a Yes man... especially with F.A at the time.
@@NGHTNGLHS88it was nothing to do with being a yes man. He was doing dodgy business dealings.
R .I .P Terry Venables
Terry Venables was one of the best English managers of all time. Amazing man management, and great tactical awareness. Rest in peace legend ❤❤❤
RIP TERRY
He was unlucky not become a hero with the Australian national team. We should have been at '98, and I think our golden generation would've achieved more if they'd got through with him at the helm.
Australia 97 vs Australia 05? I watched 05, I was 11 then. Didn't see 97. But by watching videos of that 97 team, they were better technically. Better individual players as well
Lovely sentiments there lad 🥰🫡💪⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️
rip 💔
Great in-site from Gary and a class tribute. R.I.P Terry your contribution to football will be remembered for many many years. 🙏
THE GODFATHER
Terry venables and Bobby Robson my 2 favourite England mangagers but Terry venables was a world class coach and manager.
Great manager with England and Spurs RIP
Neville : "Mainoo looked like a City player"
Keane : "He looked like a United player"
I’ve been watching England since 1990. For me, there are only 2 truly great England performances. 5-1 in Munich and beating the Dutch 4-1 at Euro 96. We played them at their own game in a must win match and Holland had zero answer. But for a missed penalty, I think we win that tournament. Terry was ahead of his time and we missed a trick by not keeping him on. He will be greatly missed
Less than an inch away from the golden goal with Gascoigne v Germany 🇩🇪 Czech Republic 🇨🇿 in final he deserved it did Terry venables brilliant coach 👍
He technically didn't deserve it because he didn't bring any subs on in that entire semi-final, Germany used all 3 and also all 3 of their subs scored in the shootout the German coach was a bit smarter.
You have to put on a LesFerdinand and/or RobbieFowler who scored over 120 goals between them over the previous 2 seasons on for Southgate for the shootout at least.
@FootkerSnookball
Totally correct. Robbie Fowler especially was criminally under used by him.
Terry had Exactly what it takes to be an England manager
how we didn’t win ‘96 is still a mystery.
Exactly
It would've been a comfortable final win at Wembley vs 🇨🇿 but Venables didn't deserve it because the German coach was smarter than him thet actually used all their subs while Venebles didn't use any in the whole match, not even for the shootout. Just simply put LesFerdinand and/or RobbieFowler on the field just before full-time for Southgate and there's a much better chance of winning the shootout.
I agree best English coach ❤
No, Bob Paisley and Brian Clough were the best English coaches. 5 European Cups between them.
❤& ✊
The only thing he got wrong in this great speech is comparing him to Southgate,
Venables would have loved coaching the current England side with so many talented youngsters
When I look back as a fan of Terry he was so ahead of his time ,I never met him but I can only assume he knew the right time to bollock his team but also knew when to pull them into his arms,a very likeable character that didn't push players to do unthinkable things but to get better at what they were good at.i will never forget his smile and his infectious personality,I can only imagine the players that played under him would literally walk through brick walls for him and that's a rare quality not just in football or sport but in life itself,it's a very sad day 😢 but Terry thanks for the memories you gave me and undoubtedly millions of people worldwide you will be sorely missed by everyone and my thoughts go out to his family and friends and everyone that was fortunate to have met or worked with him
Looked a great manager to play for.....had that cheeky cockney confidence down to a tee

Imagine El Tel in charge of this current crop of English players. They have the kind of versatility that he would relish. I loved him, even though was Spurs. RIP big man.
Where is the full podcast??
Fans loved him, players loved him. The FA dropped a major bollock letting him walk away from the England job. It took 20 years to recover
Best England manager since Ramsey.
Ok him and Bobby Robson.
Cloughie was English. But yeah ... El Tel was an icon.
As a Sunderland fan in my lifetime
El Tel up there
But
Sir Bobby Robson's
Netherlands 1 england 4 Euro 96 - check out this brilliance !
Well said Gary,
Just to add Tottenham were very. very good while Terry was in charge.
Not many English men have coached Barcelona. He was class.
After Spanish, England has the most Barcelona managers. Eleven English managers is a lot.
@@kb5509 not in recent history
@@DamonClarke-uo3ed not many of any non Spanish nationality have managed them in recent history.
Damn the F.A.
Denied us a genius managing England
Gary Missed 2008 season.
Sir Bobby Robson for me as the best English manager but I thought “El Tel” was fantastic and made you believe the England team would win 👍
World Cup Winner:Sir Alf Ramsey has a shout and had an even better team in Mexico 1970..:)
@@Isleofskye He was obviously a great Manager but imho at the time he was managing England were a powerhouse on the World stage and the standard of some countries was abysmal??? Sir BR managed big teams throughout Europe and at home and was successful at them all as well as England 👏 To me that team at “Italia 90” would’ve won the World Cup if they had beaten Germany, my god what a group of talented players made up that squad, they were a genuine “World Class” team!?!?!
All true,mt friend.@@rojalesgary7355
Don’t tell Danny Murphy England had a set piece coach in the 90s
Imagine Tel was mana0ging the current Engl0and team
Don't forget Brian Clough
Brian was fantastic but he was never a Coach ,by his own admission. He kept it simple, recruited and shaped average players(with 1 or 2 exceptions) had a great side kick and achieved tremendous success and the players loved his Man Managrment.
What is it with weird comments? Have some respect
@@weallfollowmanutd Not sure who you were addressing but I was saying that Brian was never a Coacjh like Terry.
A scandal that he wasn't given the necessary support by the FA following Euro 96.
He played me in 4 different positions in 4 different formations in consecutive Euro 96 tournament games. What a wonderful challenge it was. He really knew what he was doing. Teams and players love changing formation for every game. His record stands for itself. One top flight league title.
Why not give him his flowers whilst hes alive 🤔 big problem in this day an age, if people were talking about Venables for the england job 5 years ago people would have laughed. Suddenly dies and he was the english pep
I mean, it's one thing to praise him as a great manager (which he undoubtedly was - probably the best England manager together with Bobby Robson and Alf Ramsay). It's an entirely different thing to want someone to come out of a long-lasting retirement
Sorry Gary, but Bobby Robson is up there with Tel....
