    Magnificent. My fave Spurs seasons: 1977/8 on those muddy pitches, Hoddle and McNab v Cloggers, Kickers & Co. 1981/2 Spurs' football was 15 years ahead of its time. ⚽⚽⚽

    Even though I’m a United fan I always enjoyed watching Spurs because they played the game the right way. Stylish entertaining football. We always got a tough game against Spurs in the 80’s , especially at White Hart Lane.

    The team of the early 80s played great football and won things - it can be done. The 81 -82 team played 66 matches and would have won the league if it hadnt been for a massive fixtures backlog caused by the terrible winter. Same thing happened in 84 -85 becos of the terrible winter. Was a travesty david pleat's team of 86 - 87 ended up empty handed

      I went to that Coventry final, the possibilty of losing didn't even enter my mind, the league cup semi was worse though!

    Thanks for this. Always thought the 81/2 season was the best for Tottenham in the 50 years ive supported the club. Should have won more than the FA cup that season. The league cup Archibald should have won it for Spurs with 5 minutes left. Barcelona kicked them out of the cup winners cup semi final and fixture congestion derailed them in the league

    • @dlamiss

      @distantvoices The Everton team of the mid 80s clicked into place after Brocks back pass which gave them the equaliser in the league cup in early 84. Remember the first game of the 84/5 season Tottenham thrashed Everton 4/1 at Goodison but Allen was injured later that season which cost Tottenham massively. No complaints as Everton were the most consistant side in England for the three years. The 86/7 season the team was rebuilt as during the season Galvin, Roberts, Miller and Falco all left after Tottenham had a slightly slow start and did well to finish third but the decision to Part company with Pleat in October 87 and replace him with the most over rated manager of the last 50 years cost Tottenham dearly

    • @LeighRichards27
      @LeighRichards27 Před 3 lety +2

      @@dlamiss yes the massive fixture congestion caused by the severe winter did for our title hopes in 84 - 85, just as it had in 81-82. I also recall everton did a real smash and grab on us in the crucial fixture at the lane towards the end of the season. But no question we were the better football side. Yes never understood the decision to sack pleat - he'd built a brilliant side the season before that nearly won everything - he ended up getting the boot becos of an allegation by a woolwich supporting copper. Scholar has a lot to answer for.

      @@LeighRichards27 Dont think there was an excuse in 84/5 to be honest. Maybe Everton were on a roll and nothing was going to stop them but with 13 games to play Spurs were level on points with them and had 9 games left to play at WHL. Had just beaten Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in over 70 years and then lost at home to Villa, Everton, Arsenal, Ipswich and Watford. Probably Allen missing most of the season was the difference.

    • @LeighRichards27
      @LeighRichards27 Před 3 lety

      @@dlamiss youre right we had plenty of games to play at home during the run in - and we contrived to lose half of them. In contrast dont think we lost another game away that season after december.

      @@LeighRichards27 Will always remember Tottenham had beaten Liverpool at Anfield then Soton at WHL and had the momentum and were Level on points with Everton then the saturday before the Everton game were beaten 2/0 at home by Villa (THAT was the killer) then of course lost to them on the Wednesday night so what could have been three points clear Tottenham were suddenly 6 points behind and that was that...

    Nowadays its hard to believe how massive the FA cup final was. The country almost stopped as everyone settled in to watch it on tv, with all day build up. Sadly the Champions League has devalued it. I was actually at both games in 81 and still at school. The Thursday remains one of the best days of my life, and I still go to games with the same mates COYS.
