  • Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in all cells!
    It is needed for cell membrane formation and function, hormone synthesis, and fat soluble vitamin production.
    2 Lab Values:
    1) HDL (good) cholesterol - HDL helps remove cholesterol from your arteries
    2) LDL (bad) cholesterol - The main source of cholesterol buildup and blockage in the arteries
    Normal LDL Value in Men & Women: less than 100mg/dL
    Normal HDL Value in Men: Greater than 50mg/dL
    Normal HDL Value in Women: Greater than 40mg/dL
    Causes of elevated LDL:
    -Diet (saturated or trans fat, processed foods, alcohol, added sugar, caffeine
    canola/vegetable oils, low quality animal products, refined grains, processed meats)
    -Medications (diuretics, Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus, glucocorticoids, Amiodarone)
    -Diseases (Biliary obstruction, Nephrotic syndrome)
    -Disorders: Hypothyroidism, obesity
    Common Medication used in practice to lower cholesterol:
    -Statins (Atorvastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin, Lovastatin)
    Best to take in the evening. With or without food. Cause myopathy including risk of Rhabdomyolysis can be a life-threatening condition caused by muscle breakdown and muscle death.
    *Avoid concomitant use with Gemfibrozil, Niacin, Colchicine, grapefruit and grapefruit juice can lead to higher amounts of drugs in your body.
    Naturally Lower Cholesterol:
    -Over-the-counter products: Red Yeast Rice, CoQ10, Omega-3s, Garlic tablets
    -Vegetables/Fruits
    -Nuts
    -Green tea
    -Olive oil, Coconut oil, Avocado oil
    -Turmeric
    -Avocados
    -Sweet potatoes
    -Beans & legumes
    -Chia/flax seeds
    -Wild salmon
    -Cinnamon
    -Garlic clove
    -EXERCISE!!
