  • Insomnia is a poor night's sleep that reduces a person's ability to function well.
    Most adults require 7 to 8 hours of sleep
    Drugs that contribute to insomnia:
    1) Bupropion (Wellbutrin) /Fluoxetine (Prozac)
    2) Stimulants (i.e. Methylphenidate, Adderall)
    3) Decongestants (i.e. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed))
    4) Caffeine
    5) Alcohol
    6) Steroids
    7) Diuretics (i.e. Hydrochlorothiazide, Furosemide, Bumetanide)
    Medications used for insomnia:
    I. Non-Benzodiazepine (First-Line): Zolpidem (Ambien) 5-10mg at bedtime; Eszopiclone (Lunesta) 1-3mg at bedtime
    II. Benzodiazepine: Lorazepam (Ativan) 0.5-2mg at bedtime; Temazepam(Restoril) 7.5-30mg at bedtime
    III. Antihistamine (over-the-counter): Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 25-50mg at bedtime
    Natural Products/Foods to prevent insomnia:
    1) St. John's Wort
    2) Chamomile Tea
    3) Melatonin
    4) Celery (i.e. stalk or juice)
    5) Watermelon
    6) Milk/Yogurt/Cheese
    7) Apple Cider Vinegar
    8) Almonds
