- This is the explosive moment a police officer's car filled with $1,500,000 worth of cocaine blew up at a petrol station in Argentina. According to Argentinian news outlets, the sergeant, Sofia Esther Chaparro's car was stuffed with 20 kilos of the drug and she was with her three children at the time of the blast. The explosion, which saw clouds of cocaine blasted around into the air, happened in Oran in the province of the provincial capital of Salta. The Buenos Aires City police officer and her three children were not in the car at the time as she had pulled over and they had got out by the petrol pump. After the blast, passers-by said that the ground surrounding it was covered in white powder. Even more drug packages wrapped in yellow paper are said to have also gone up in smoke. Orán’s auxiliary prosecutor, María del Carmen Núñez, told Télam news agency 'She claimed to have taken the car out of a workshop hours before and that she had gone to fill the gas tank to continue the trip back to Buenos Aires.' Chaparro, who has been put under house arrest, refused to testify in court. She has since been charged with transporting narcotics. According to the Beunos Aires Herald, sources from the police force's internal affairs division said that the sergeant was removed from her duties while investigators try to establish whether she acted alone or if she was part of an organization. At the time of the incident, Chaparro was on medical leave. The prosecutor said that Chaparro owned the car with her ex-husband. Two of Chaparro's three children are said to be disabled, which is what prompted the prosecutor to allow her house arrest - so she can continue to look after them. Argentina's provincial police forces are considered to be highly susceptible to corruption. An article on Insight Crime explains that despite Argentina being considered one of the safer regions in Latin America, there is a 'serious problem' with corruption. Partly due to failed past reform efforts, the country's provincial police forces are vulnerable to organised crime. South America accounts for 30 per cent of the world's cocaine production - but most of this is not in Argentina. For people who dont understand why the car blew up: this car has been converted to use natural gas instead of gasoline, these explosions usually occur when the natural gas tank (located in the cars's trunk) fails due to the huge pressure it has to hold. You can recognize a car using natural gas because they are filled through a pressure valve that is located in the front. Car companies dont make these conversions, they are made by other companies that specialize in that kind of work. The reason people convert their gasoline cars to natural gas cars is because the latter is cheaper. These kind of systems are very common in south america. The conversion makes the car work with natural gas but you can still use the gasoline system if you want as it is not removed from the car and in fact you can push a button installed in the car to switch between natural gas and gasoline while the car is running. I know all this because I live in Colombia, I am Colombian and I have traveled in several of these cars.

Yeah I'm not a mechanic or anything but I can't think of why this could even happen to be a "mechanical failure". No smoke or flame around and the trunk just explodes. Trunks aren't likely to explode as far as I know.
@@Kilbot192 some countries use natural gas (i think) but definitely a gas in a tank most often in the trunk, however this did not look like one of those explosions.

@aspenrebel a small explosive device (pipe bomb for instance) is more than enough to cause this damage, but not large enough to have after effects such as a fire. Smoke wouldn't even be noticed when the entire area has powdery cocaine particals floating everywhere. In fact the cocaine likely would act as a smothering agent to any potential fire as well, like a standard dry fire extinguisher

There is an explanation in the comments earlier. The cars are converted to use natural gas . The tank holding it is in the back and is pressurised. Basically the tank failed.
