    Thanks for a great video. Would like to add one thing. The factory cables have a " protective " vinyl coat. The plastic will fatigue and crack in cold winter weather in just a couple of years. This caused my wire cables to prefer to bend at the break in the plastic, resulting in the cables themselves breaking at that point. When I replaced mine, I carefully skinned off the vinyl sheath with a pocket knife, then lightly coated the cables with anti seize grease. That was ten years ago. My cables are still in perfect condition. I believe Ford and Chevy use the same type of coated cables.

    I'd like to add, for removing that factory retainer on the backside of the cable limiter. Use a pair of side cutters, cut it off in about 3 seconds rather than trying to unthread it. Also, that plastic cable clip's purpose is so that the cable doesn't jam in between the bed and the assist shock. It is required, do not perform install without it. I know this because I "tested it" before installing that clip and sure enough my cable jammed between the bed and the shock.
    Other than that, so far I love it. Good video.

  • @appliancerepairshorts
    @appliancerepairshorts Před 5 lety

    You did good on the shock. That is the correct position not because of the legibility, but because you should place the ram / piston in the down position that way water/ debris fall off .

    I've had a EZdown for my Nissan Frontier for about 2 months. It worked well for about a month. However, the clip the holds the upper mounting in place is really thin and bends when you put the tailgate up. I can't seem to keep the strut from popping off. When it does the tailgate slams down. Any ideas?

  • @EdouarddeVarennes
    @EdouarddeVarennes Před 8 lety +2

    Like a lot of people, I had trouble with the jury-rigged nutsert tool they sent with the kit. There's too much play between the allen bolt and the other components, so when I tried to turn the nut, the washers and bearings got out of alignment and bound causing the whole thing to turn together. Here's the fix: Set up the nutsert tool with the allen head 3/4" from the first washer as per the instructions. Remove the washers and bearings. Wrap about 5-6 turns of electrical tape around the bolt just below the nut where the washers will go. Reinstall the washers and bearings, and trim the extra tape flush with a razor or utility knife. This creates a bushing between the bolt and the washers/bearings so they stay aligned and turn smoothly without binding.

    • @ralphhross
      @ralphhross Před 7 lety

      I agree that this is the trickiest part of the installation. First off, the instructions scare you into thinking you will surely strip this and mess it up with their nine turns exactly, mark the nut and don't, don't, don't. First of all the part should be sturdier so that it is mistake proof. Secondly a lot of people will probably do what I first did and that is not make it tight enough when you use the special 'blind nut tool' to set the blind nut. The symptom will be that the ball mount will not screw in - so you may think you stripped the threads. But if you consider how the blind nut is set - if you don't get it tight enough the shorter length of the ball mount screw (compared to the 'blind nut tool' may not reach the threads (think of how the blind nut works in that it pulls the end toward the sheet metal and tightens the nut just like a molly nut works). So go back and insert the 'blind nut tool' again and pull it tighter, now the ball mount will reach and you can tighten it to the 8 pounds torque. Anyway that worked for me. PS: great video.

It's like they make them feel so uncool to use that it's the last tool I WANT to reach for, but it really is the tool that most often resolves a problem that I couldn't resolve any other way. Nice vid. A few hopefully helpful comments. for the limiter washer, rather than completely removing it, can just use a hammer and a punch to flatten out the limiter tab on the washer. For the nutsert, you can put the thread lock on the threads that pull out the nutsert...make it easier to expand. Last, chalking the tailgate side and bed side where the parts might rub, you can see if there is rubbing by opening and closing to see if any chalk gets removed. If so, put a thin mylar sheet in the area to prevent paint from rubbing off

    When removing the "limiter" washer on the tailgate, you enable the cable's metal end to rotate against the painted surface of the tailgate every time it is used... removing the paint and enabling rust and corrosion.
    Maybe it would be better to just grind off the smaller bend on the limiter washer (not the bend that keys into the tailgate). That way, all the rotating and grinding happens between the galvanized washers instead of abrading the exterior painted surface? Good video, Thanks!

    I had to remove the hard plastic sleeve from mine. Every time I would close the tailgate, it would push against the strut, popping it off the ball at the end when it would come down. Anyone else with this issue?

      Yes. I moved the plastic sleeve to the bottom and it doesn't interfere.

    A couple of things. I bought one on amazon. It was devoid of any Deezee markings. Was supposed to have a clear film in the package and did not. The right angled toed wrnch it came with doesn’t fit my Ram . And everything including this video says it’s a T45 Torx. It is not. It’s a T40. I can not even find a T45. The plastic piece that clamp onto the cable is so loose on my cable it slides up and down. I put a couple of wraps of vinyl electrical tape on either end to keep it in place. I m wondering if Amazon sold me a cheap Chinese knockoff.

    You tapped in the nutsert with a rubber malet. Didn’t the nutsert spin when you tried to put the bolt back in to tighten it? You didn’t show that part.

    Just installed one on my 03 1500... Problem is I have to push the cable to the right when I shut it otherwise it gets stuck and nearly pops the strut off when trying to open it. Gonna have to install a little bumper so the cable clip can't slip behind the strut I guess

      Can the cable pivot? If it's too tight I've seen that happen.

    I've noticed that all of the ram intallation vids for this tailgate assist are missing some important info (IMHO). Apparently DeeZee has updated this kit and now instead of a ball stud that threads directly into the nutsert they have a ball mount plate( at least in the ram kit)-which is obviously far more robust than the ball stud. I've read posts where some have had it (ball stud)break/snap off. Also read posts where some had trouble getting the nutsert to "set" and it wouldn't anchor itself in but would just keep turning without ever tightening itself into the hole into which it was inserted.The DeeZee vid shows to use some of the blue thread locker included with the kit on the nutsert bolt and to let it dry for at least an hour before attempting to install the nutsert. Check out the vid here; czcams.com/video/MVS-cEOkEXQ/video.html

      @@AnthonyJ350 Lets go to the tape measure scene at 4:20 into the video where you say "from the washer to the HEAD is going to measure 3/4 of an inch". The issue is that the head, itself, is about 3/16 inch long and you are not clear about measuring from the outside end of the head OR the inside of the head.
      I may sound a bit petty but the head does have two ends.
