Graeme brought up a great point when Pardew said "he did terrific for Englan." The fact that England play a lot of games against teams that are not as good as some Premier league teams until later stages of competitions is overlooked in debates about players such as Maguire as well.

As a leeds fan i can say souness is spot on. Kalvin Phillips was a bang average mid table championship midfielder for years, until bielsa came in during the summer of 2018.
And like with so many leeds players, he somehow managed to squeeze more out of them than anyone ever thought possible. He accentuated their positives and for quite a long while he was excellent at camouflaging their negatives.
Once Phillips lost bielsa, he lost what made him very good in the first place.
Talent wise hes a championship midfielder, but he had a system centred around him at leeds that made him look far better than he ever actually was.
I laughed when he joined man city, as i knew that he misplaced far too many simple passes and committed far too many fouls to ever be considered for a man city side.
That never mattered at leeds, but in a pep guardiola man city team... it was never going to cut it.

He hasn't had a standout game for club or country, since bielsa was sacked 2 years ago this very month. That's a fact.
Like alot of leeds players who were part of that promotion winning team, they were average players that bielsa squeezed phenomenal levels out of. As soon as he left, the levels dropped and they reverted more to type.

This one of the better TalkSport segments regarding current situation at West Ham. Souness gets it…. Pards gets it although you can feel his loyalty to a fellow manager so doesn’t go in on Moyes but can sense he wants to. So many pundits just use the table to throw the ‘What more do you want’ at the fans but for once this isn’t one of them. Just wish the board would take notice as this isn’t just a reaction to the last 8 matches this is based on a lot of last seasons poor premiership matches. Take the conference league win of last year and it’s been pretty damn poor all in all. And the win percentage of Moyes without the European games is not all that great considering over a third of his league wins came in the lockdown season and they have been on decline since year by year. This seasons start has flattered us and although we’ve had some big wins it says a lot when the GK is man of the match more regularly than the attackers scoring the winning goals.

Moyes is not a front foot style manager but 2 x top 6 or 1 with a 7th( not sure) finishes is a major achievement considering the so called top 6 then add in Newcastle; Brighton; now Villa too . Then they have gone and spent a fair amount by their standards with some flair added and the fans expect better football for their loyalty every week. So they could get rid of Moyes and the next guy may play so called better football but not reach those heights.

The bottom line is Moyes is a defensive manager. Sits back in the hope to krrp a game tight and nick a win. What invariably happens though is we fall behind and then we are forced to go on the front foot. When we do go on the front foot searching to get back into the game we can be pretty nice on the eye. Now with Paqueta out we have absolutely no creative spark and we could be on the pitch for 7 days and still not score. Moyes has turned promising players into robots eith his tracking back demands and they just look as if they dont want to be here. If I hear the 'he's won us our first trophy in 43 years' I'll flip. Lets be honest, Ted Lasso could have led us to glory last season in that competition. Moyes idn't brave enough to br a top top manager. When I watch them play, it screams lack of modern tactics. Potter is there, & I think he could tweak things just enough to get some juice out of this group.
Kalvin phillips messed up his own career (injury notwithstanding) by taking an unwise jump to the upper echelon club. I left the uk years ago but still get up in the middle of the night to watch my beloved west ham. It's not just the dire football being served up by David moyes. He picks the team and decides the tactics. He refuses to use academy players.a couple of seasons ago we were down to the barebones, west ham academy players will never get a look in with moyes in charge. He has wingers on the bench but puts a right back on the wing. He turned arnautovic and Antonia into strikers and it worked because they were both fast and strong. Because of this he thinks this works for every player. He played benrama and formals out of position and then uses them as scapegoats when things don't work out .we losing 1 nil with 20 minutes to go, we have 2 strikers on the bench. He takes a defender off and replaces him with another defender, no thought of let's go and draw or win the game, let's keep on defending. Spent millions on strikers that don't fit the David moyes way. Haller, scamacca, ings, vlasic. Downes and Phillips an absolute waste of money. How can west ham keep losing millions on player's moyes Has signed. We're hearing rumors that David moyes is stopping young exciting players coming to the club, also saying he won't play player's he didn't sign. We don't know if these rumors are true but surely paying fans have a right to know what's going on at their football club. Press conferences are a joke, he sees a completely different game to us. The team is old, lackless which is down to the manager, we have no youth, speed or ambition at our football club under David moyes

Another factor that doesn’t get mentioned is the coaching staff. When Moyes returned for the second spell we had Irwin, Stuart Pearce, Paul Nevin (Englands set piece coach) and Kevin Nolan. It’s only Nolan that’s still at the club the others have all left for various reasons. I believe that has had an impact. More to the point, Jarrod Bowen has failed miserably since the FA Cup game against Bristol City after doing very until then. Moyes has refused to sign a second striker for a number of seasons, relying on Antonio, and then decides to make Bowen the main sole striker who is now firing blanks. That is purely a man management issue and Moyes must consider his future if West Ham are in the bottom half in a few months.

As for Moyes, he hasn't evolved as a manager since his Everton days. At Manchester United he sent us backwards by a couple of years despite being champions of the Premier League that year. At Sociedad bar an impressive win over Barcelona when the MSN started to click, most fans would rather forget him since his football don't fit in Spain. Tbf at Sunderland, he entered a club that was on the inevitable back to back relegation. 1st stint he steady the ship but no plans were placed for his permanent appointment. 2nd stint yet again kept West Ham up finished top 6 in lockdown football. The problem lies when he got better players he couldn't get the best out of the squad. 2022 West Ham went on a miserable run of form that got them 7th and 14th at the following campaign because Moyes failed to adapt to the football climate. He's European runs is just a smoke screen in their otherwise shocking Premier League form since January 2022. With their best player Paqueta injured and sold Fornals(he wasted Fornals on the wing since he still refuses to sign wingers since Bowen) West Ham are getting blown out by clubs. The Moyes experience has reached its end and I don't see it getting any better. The severe lack of wingers, wasting attackers like Ings, Kudus and Ward Prowse and still refusing to evolve as a manager to survive at the elite leagues has hindered Moyes from being a great manager.

So much of the criticism directed at Moyes from the West Ham fan-base carries the feint whiff of what is now an acquired snobbery that emanated in the 60's under Ron Greenwood i.e. we only want to win playing attacking expansive football and using only home grown talent. Truth be told, they haven't been able to retain the players to deliver that brand of football for at least 30 years. @@Stephen09WPep hasn't done anything, people said he was ruining Grealish but I'd argue he's turned him into a more complete player.
He likes players with a certain attitude and I think Phillips lacks the right mindset.

This is one of the many ways that other teams - especially the elite cartel teams - will keep you in your place. That said, there is no way for a team like West Ham to ever break into the cartel without a big money takeover, and even then it's no guarantee - just look at Newcastle. And if you get the takeover, the cartel will call you fake and plastic. At team like West Ham just can't win.

It wasn't so long ago West Ham were getting relegated (or threatening with it) every second or third season. They were, by comparison, happier then it seems. Nothing like a bit of silverware (after a million years) to make you think you deserve Ancelotti.

The cup saved Moyes job, after spending 500 million they were entitled to win something! I’m shocked that Philips has only played 65 premier league games in his career - and valued at that kind of money - lm a 60 year WH fan and would have preferred Jesse Lingard over Philips any day.
