Supposedly dead, embittered former official "The Ghost Face Killer" has returned and is seeking revenge on those martial arts masters that once opposed him - his name is infamous and his Five Elements fighting style is deadly. Meanwhile, young Ah Pao joins a martial arts school in order to become a great fighter and to take revenge on the man who killed his father. He gets very good quickly but timing is everything and his arrival at the school in relation to the return of the Ghost Face Killer sees him suspected of being connected and thus put out of the school. He falls under the tutelage of an elderly chess master in the town, who teaches him a deadly martial art.

OH IM SO GETTING MY COPY-SAW THIS ON 42ND STREET AS A DOUBLE FEATURE WITH 7 GRANDMASTERS AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME BETWEEN1979 AND 1981.I STILL HAVE MEMORIES OF A SOLD OUT THEATER GOING CRAZY OVER THIS MOVIE.A MUST HAVE ON BLUE RAY.
This looks leaps and bounds better than any copy we ever seen. 👏🏻 great job Eureka, and thanks to you guys for taking the time to do the comparison!

I received my copy last Monday, I also had the pleasure of watching this classic at a cinema screening in London on the 10th of March 2024.
Wow, that remaster looks amazing! Makes me want to watch it even more (I've never watched The Mystery Of Chessboxing; I had the chance to buy the VHS and DVD of it back in the day, but the quality didn't look very good to me...)!
My copy from Eureka arrived a couple of days ago and it just looks fantastic ,never thought we would ever see it that crisp. Given how popular this movie is, I am amazed that they have only released it as a bonus with the first 2000 copies and much like the Joseph Kuo Cinematic vengeance box, I suspect it won't be the last time they release it. Great comparison man .

The Blu-ray looks amazing! Now, the film was never released officially on DVD and the only version available in widescreen for decades was a time-coded low resolution screener. Now my question is, is this a new restoration by Eureka or just utilizing the pre-existing restoration that was released online through RZA livestream back in 2020? Regardless, I hope to watch this Blu-ray one day. Looks like the best we’ll ever see considering this is probably the last surviving 35mm print in the world.

@vangmx Dan Halsted scanned RZA's print for the 2020 livestream and the file used for the livestream was the file that Eureka used. Eureka did additional cleanup to the dirt and scratches as Dan's condition for letting Eureka use his file. Eureka bought the rights to the film from Director Joseph Kuo with my help and never used any other sources for the Blu-Ray except Dan's, and they will go after any bootlegger that is still selling unauthorized copies of this film online.

How is the translation quality on the burned-in subs?
The decades old screener with the burnt-in theatrical subs has been available online. Unfortunately, the subs aren’t great. Too bad this is probably the only copy that survives today.

I remember thinking when I first got THE JOSEPH KUO Collection, how could they have ommited THE M.O.C.B.? And BORN INVINCIBLE for that matter. One out of two ain't bad. I jumped right on it and got the first one out of only five available from my most reliable overseas source that had it!

Yeah, that was the only thing available for a long time. There are some cropped versions that look a little better, but are obviously missing picture on the sides.
There some controversy kicking off online. Someone called KFR is claiming that Eureka used his fan restoration project of Mystery of Chess Boxing for this Blu-Ray release, something which those that work with Eureka deny.
Any chance you could do a comparison between the KFR Blu-ray vs the Eureka Blu-ray?
The proof apparently is the main movie title screen which shows the title of the movie.
If you can help Time Sq Kung Fu solve this debate raging online at the moment amongst fans.
I already addressed the situation and someone posted one of my picture comparisons on the group. It is not his restoration. You can even see the difference with the company logo in clarity and color. Eureka and everyone else is not denying it, they stated facts.
I have seen the print that Eureka used 4 years ago and then twice at RZA’s grand opening of his restaurant at the Alamo Drafthouse in 2022.
Dan Halsted is the one that scanned RZA’s 35mm. He is the one that provided the print to EUREKA under certain conditions they clean it up. Dan, works with the RZA and Frank Djeng saw the before and after and got the license for this movie directly from Kuo.
I would have done a comparison if KFR wasn’t insulating people and using slurs at them.

Yeah I would love the Bluray but it's region B. Can't they just make these region free
This has to do more with licensing reasons. They have released dual region releases with MVD and Arrow Video.
