This video is a discussion about some controversy that has been brewing around Eureka's release of "The Mystery of Chess Boxing." A fan has claimed that the company stole their restoration and is now passing it off on Blu-Ray. We have a chat about why that isn't the case and how you can spot when digital grain has been added to a film file.

I’m happy that this comparison video was made to solve some questions that popped up. I wasn’t directly involved with the team at Eureka who worked on this project but I do know a bit about behind the scenes since I’ve been a huge supporter and acted as translation volunteer for Eureka’s projects. Also, I provided some consultation with the team at Eureka to pursue this project. Now, the film was already restored and remastered by Dan for the RZA 2020 livestream, however the copyrights have been in limbo for who knows how long, so I suggested Eureka to contact the Taiwan Film Institute since they’ve released many of their restored films on Blu-ray and I know they should have Joseph Kuo’s contact since he is in good relations with the archive. Eureka was able to secure the copyrights from Joseph Kuo with the wonderful help of Frank Djeng. At the same, Eureka was able to secure the source from Dan. Eureka then performed some additional restoration work with the existing remaster. Although not perfect to say if Eureka went and restored the film using the raw scan, touching up the existing restored version was more likely due to budget and time. Anyway, I hope with the help of fans, we can see more Joseph Kuo films in the near future.

Thank you for the insight and highly appreciate your efforts as well. We had to address this situation and give people an in depth look on why Eureka didn’t do what they were accused of.

@17:44 Frankie subconsciously dropping some rhymes 'they had to go frame by frame.... to remove that grain!'

Thanks. I'm actually convinced I might have been very unfortunately mistaken. Thanks for giving me the time of day to put the film under the microscope.
The windowboxing on my version is the result of personal preference of having prints slightly underscanned to compensate for losses of data when played back on plasma screens. The aspect ratio is around 2.40:1.
My main reason for being convinced my restoration was used came from the admittedly very compressed comparison video having eeerily similar colour timings and also having the title card I generated, which is probably the only thing borrowed.
Might I politely point out, I'm not a man. I'm a lady. Thank you.

Apologies for the misgendering. Like we stated in our video you do great work.

I would also like to apologize for misgendering you. I didn’t know. I’m sorry about that.

no need to apologise. I owe Times Square Kung Fu an apology for calling him a 'fucking idiot' after he took what I said as a racial slur towards Asians a couple days ago (the soy boy thing). I was mostly only pissed off with Will Gish at the time, the rest was really just a little bit of bitchy shade towards people getting a bit brashly defensive about Eureka at the time who I felt were running their mouths at the time. In hindsight, I could have responded better at the time and I feel rather silly, and rightly so. But calling Times Square a 'fucking idiot' over a misunderstanding was uncalled for. Thanks for the understanding and taking the time to have a look for yourselves. It's put my mind at rest. For what it's worth, you've definitely earned my respect. I hope we can maybe be friends in the end.
I just hope to God that Eureka and Frank Djeng don't try to sue me, I wouldn't last in prison...

@WobinuFilms Like we said in the video things were said due to the moment because I know these individuals. That’s why we didn’t mention your name to avoid harassment towards you and we didn’t mention the interaction that happened in the group.
This was solely focused to see if they really did take your work, because if they did, trust us we would have called them out. There was no bias in this video at all. We keep it real here.
We understood your frustration as well, so no worries. All I say is, please chill out 😅 You are a very talented individual. Let’s just move forward from here.

@@TimesSqKungFU I'd also like to point out that altering the letterboxing and removing grain is not something that needs to be done frame-for-frame, grain removal is easy. It's removing dust and dirt that takes such effort. It would have been a relatively two-step process to remove the DNR from my version which could have been automated using DVO's tools, Blackmagic devices or even AVISynth scripts perfectly (more than likely Eureka uses DVO Phoenix as its the most complete and comprehensive package for compressionist end and studio fine tuning tools, although I'm not personally a fan because I feel it's DNR is too harsh and smudgy and feel that AVISynth can acheive better results and destroy less detail as you can write and program specific plugins for each movie). It would have been very very easy for Eureka to DNR my version and change the aspect ratio, not that they did, I'm convinced enough now to give them the benefit of the doubt as your video does give enough of a good gander at the film and I think Eureka could have done better but I also feel bad for stuff I said. They did a good job.

That little guy next to mark long is actually a dude and not a female. 🤣
I'm happy that EUREKA put this classic out.
it actually looks better than THE SWORDSMAN OF ALL SWORDSMEN.
I really hope theres more kung-fu classics like this to be released in future.

Shows how much I know about the film, haha. Regardless, I think you get the point I was making about grain management.
