- Nightmare Install I did a while back. Just got around to uploading some of the footage. Long vid but you can skip ahead to see the end. Biggest problem is my dash and trim pieces paint started flaking off.
Wiring harness adapter: Metra 70-1771
Dash install kit: Metra 95-5026 (had to modify it so there may be better options out there)
SiriusXM module w/antenna: SXV 300
Paint: www.colorbondpaint.com/

Thank goodness I found this video. Just purchased Jensen double din with GPS, Siriusxm and back up camera , all from Crutchfield. Their instructions are crap. They have a good Tech phone line, but actually seeing you do it is awesome. Oh, installing in a 2002 F 150 Supercrew.
Right now trying to find best place to run the wires for the GPS and Siriusxm antennas. Which are not supposed to be near each other.
I sympathize on the dash paint. It is crap.
Thanks !
Thanks Man I picked everything up today from my friends car audio shop we had to order the Sirius XM interface
To enlarge the dash so that the double din head unit fits, use an
ossilating power tool with a plunge cutting blade for the top 1/4" and
the 60 grit sanding triangle attachment for the lower plastic lip. Its
easy and takes less than 20 minutes and is MUCH cleaner.
behind a bunch of pretty plastic. Who cares?
Hello, me grug, me use grinder.
Yeah, they’re $30 at Harbor Freight for the cheapo adjustable ones. Even some of the yellow, blue, and red ones aren’t adjustable. Glad I went with the cheap HF oscillating cutting tool. I hardly use it but when I do, it’s a Godsend and the results are outstanding.
Dont even have a double din and just sat here and watched him put it in
lol. Thanks for watching. This was not a great vid. I didn't think anyone would actually watch it. Just having some CZcams fun back then.
nice job, looks clean not sloppy at all
I would let you do my f150 same model bc you did an excellent job. Thanks for the vid i want one in mine now but i don't have the patience to do it myself.
Hello yeah man finally found this I appreciate it man
awesome
I have an 03 xl flairside, just curious why didnt you in stall the usb and aux port below where the lighter and charger port is, then it would have all been hidden?
i find the best thing for cutting anything plastic, is a "zipdisk" on die grinder or dremel. i used a dremal on mine. the blade is wide and makes it easy for nice straight cuts, also melts as much as cuts, you can rub it off with your fingers for a nice clean edge.
but very nice, i have pioneer dbl din, n a 14" lcd for backseat for the kids, and a 7" for a "heads up" screen onthe windshield.. lol (only the backseat plays when driving of course... )
ally nice job on the wiring .That sucks with all the paint flacking off the panel .I'm like you I couldn't stanfd looking at the dash even after touching up the paint . Killer audio video setup !!!
krazy45cat Thanks. I couldn't believe the paint did that. Afterwards I did a google search and found it to be common with my body style truck. I was actually surprised the plastic pieces were painted instead of being molded that color but I guess it makes sense as far as cost goes.
+therealcobraburnout I have a 2000 model with the same flaking problem. If you do get a new bezel, take out one of the cigarette lighter plugs and put the usb in its place..probably put the aux in there somewhere to. should be enough room to drill a 3/8" hole behind the cover door as well.
That's a good Idea MrSpanky473. Thanks
I used to only buy single din Kenwood radios for my 99 f150. I’m runnin an 1800W amp and 2 12’s. 6x8’s by Kenwood in the doors. The amp is Power Akoustik and been underwater 3 different times due to being stuck in some deep ass mud holes. Threw itself into protection mode each time and turned right back on after all 3 times. Anyway, the last radio I bought was a double din PA 625B or something like that. I really wish I would’ve stuck with the older Kenwoods I used to buy. Did a good amount of trimming and regret it now. Oh well at least it looks nice. I’m gonna upgrade my radio soon. Probably get another Kenwood
local audio store but you probably can get them on Amazon.com as well.
i accidentally hook up ground wire for video to 12v power wire and loss subs for bluetooth only is there any way of fixing it?
good clean install👍
well i understand that flaking paint do you know if they make paint for dashes i've got a big chunk off where the headlight switch turns on
i painted my entire piece like yours with plastikote spray paint. just clean up w rubbing alcohol and paint. tough as nails now. i painted it silver to match my truck. 2000 f 150
Thanks for the info.
Where did you find the USB pass through and the Aux pass through?
Nice video. Thanks and just a heads up. When these 97 to 03 f150 dash parts start flaking you can take them down to the original black plastic under the tan & add a coat of black paint. if done right it looks good and like it’s supposed to be that way. Either way it looks better than peeling or touch up paint.
Hey buddy I like how it come out I really like the usb and aux passthrough
thanks
@@TheRealCobraBurnout for the usb and aux passthrough, is there a kit or part numbers for them? and where did you get them?
@@franktobar8764 I did this over 4 years ago and don't have the part numbers anymore. But there are a lot of USB and aux passthrough kits on Amazon now. Here is a good starter point for you to look at: amzn.to/2P1aIXM
What paint code, brand touch up? Same dash same flaking lol
these videos help me alot because i have the same truck
awesome
Does it play video from bluetooth thats mainly what im looking for
That wiring harness is for all 2003 f150s? Just solder it to my dual double din?
That unit looks great 🤔 I kinda didn't want a full touch one like that but that seems so flush and factory like . Looks great
Thanks. It was a pain to put in.
Did you have any issues putting everything back together?????
Lmao every time I do a stereo like these I ALWAYS forget to do the mic haha so i understand your frustration!
Totally! Thanks for commenting
Nice install.
Thank you
One of the best videos on this topic...thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the heads up on the Reverse wire up at the dash, Will my my kenwood install go so much easier ! :)
Why did you trim why not just get one that fits perfectly in their ?
nice work bro ....
Thank you!
I'd like to know where you got that soldering lamp at? That's a nice looking, practical setup right there. Seriously, I want one just like it... does the lamp have a built in light?
Yes on the light. amzn.to/2t5gvjs
Looks like I'll need a cutting tool. Got the metra 95-5818 that Best buy said fits.
Hope it turns out good
You're saudering skills are artistic
Nice way of saying unskilled I suppose? Which is accurate. I rarely do it but so far it's held up all these years.
The Kenwood model doesn't have the camera guidelines built in?
Mine didn't
where did you end up putting your mic at? top of the a-pillar? or middle of the front part of the headliner?
just to the left of the roof console. But I'm sure it would work great by the A-pillar. You basically aim it towards you for best sound but it can be turned..so I went more in the middle in case I needed to turn it for a passenger to talk on the phone. But really I don't even do that. Seems to work good.
My first after market stereo was a Kenwood I put in my first car. It was not that fancy though:).
hey man that metal bracket piece at the very back did you remove it, bend it or dis the double din slide right in with it being where it is.?
slides in after cutting the plastic up front.
Great Info. Great Job.
Thanks for watching!
Did you also trim the sides of the stock bracket or just the top of it to fit the headunit in?
+Tyler Hickey top
Nice video. Any chance you know if the reverse light wiring is the same on the manual?
Sorry, I do not.
Good job bro , now you never have to leave your truck for anything ...
Gun Enthusiast Its been a good truck for sure. Hope to get a lot more mileage and years out of it.
Of course it's a good truck, it's a Ford vehicle. 👍
I'm about to install a Kenwood DNX573S in my 2003 Mach 1, hopefully it's a little easier than yours was. Looks like it should be pretty straight forward. I haven't done a head unit install in a good 15 years though, back when I was still a teenager.
Do I actually need to trim that and connect those wires together like u mentioned in the beginning?
Nah, you could just leave your stock radio in place.
Is it 6.5 inch or 7 inch
Thanks for making this video. Just bought an '03 F150 and I wanted to know if this was possible. Cool video, shame about the paint.
No problem 👍
Did you use an install kit at all ? I watched the video but can't tell if you ended up using it or not . Im in the process of doing the exact same install in my 98'
+Tony Riehle Yes but be prepared that you may have to modify the install kit a bit (i.e. shave the top part down a bit to get it to fit in right) I CANNOT say that I recommend the metra 95-5026 kit BUT it was the only thing I found locally. I notice online that some guys by another brand (scoche I think). Just an FYI.
A lot of people don't know that you're suppose to cut the bottom bar off just above the heater controls, this will allow the radio to slide down far enough to expose the DVD slot more so it will be easier to slide a CD/DVD in and out
+TimbeauArt Are you talking about on the trim piece or on the inner dash bracket? I don't have issues with inserting CDs or DVDs but the trim piece is way snug on top which shifted it up a bit against the heater controls.
+therealcobraburnout I'm talking about the bar right above the heater controls, if you look at your metra face kit directions you will see where there tell you to actually cut that bar off, I just installed a Pioneer AVH-X3700BHS on a 98 Expedition, when I cut that bar off everything fell right in place, even the metra face kit fit perfectly.
TimbeauArt Ugh..I did cut that bar off. Thanks though
TimbeauArt the whole bar ? or just the lip that faces upward on that bar ? And you cut both top and bottom on that ?
is there a specific size i should stay away from or well they all fit with little trimming
+Charlyn Austin The 'Double Din' designation is the size so as far as I know they all would fit with a little trimming like in this vid
that usb port you put in , did it have threads or did it just snap in and where did you buy it ?
no threads, just snaps in. Got it at a audio store down in Colorado. But I'm sure you can find one online. Sorry this vid is old and I don't recall all the details right now.
Hi what did you hook the blue white remote wire to?
Adam Beard hook it up to the blue wire that’s on the harness that goes into the truck
nice video this helped
Glad to hear!
I too have a 2003 ford f150 with the same paint chipping where did you get the paint at or please share the code.
link in the description. But I don't have a paint code. Did this vid many years ago.
Hey I installed a double din in my f150 but I'm getting no sound but I have power do you know why?
KingSavvy I wasn’t this answer bad as well
question - did you do any cutting on the trim itself for the radio? I thought I had to trim a little and it looks like Shhhhh. if you didn't I'm ordering another one tomorrow, let me know please. yours loos great
Don't cut it other than drilling holes for the usb and aux inputs if you have those. You do have to trim the radio install kit. I had to shave down the top a of that...my trim still fit SUPER tight up there and of course I got a lot of paint flaking off which looks bad anyway. There may have been a better kit out there that I don't know about. One day I may put a cover on it or take it off and sand the whole thing down and repaint it. None of the touch up paints match properly.
Hello i have a stereo that have extra wires , a blue , brown , and a pink one do i just leave those there without connection?
That's an unanswerable question on CZcams. You'll have to use your particular radio wiring diagram and match up with your truck wiring.
Why don’t you clean up the part and re paint the whole thing. Nice review, install
That would be the best thing to do
where did you get that dash trim paint mine is peeling something awful
www.colorbondpaint.com/
Another question where did you position or route your Bluetooth brands free mic ?
Sal Gonzalez Mic just clips on to headliner edge. I have it just to the left of my overhead console. Cable routed / tucked under headliner over to driver side pillsr trim (tucked under trim) then routed under dash and back to radio.
Sal Gonzalez i
TheRealCobraBurnout awesome, I mounted mine Near the corner of the driver windshield, routed the wires from the pillar tucked under the weather stripping, and it seems like a safe spot, thanks so much for the video
my f150 supercrew dash panel is solid tan plastic and couldnt flake off are you sure that someone didnt replace it with a black one and just paint it ?
I bought this truck new from the factory. A quick google search by you would confirm that these F150s had painted trim bezels. And this type of flaking is more common than it should be. www.google.com/search?q=f150+dash+peeling&rlz=1C1EJFA_enUS737US737&oq=f150+dash+flaking&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0.9639j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
wow thats odd like i said mine is solid tan i milled a square hole in mine to put a gauge in and it was tan all the way through maybe i got the odd one lol
Did you have to trim anything else other then the face. Our local audio store said they had to trim the ac docking to fit a dble din.
Nope. Only trimmed what I showed
@@TheRealCobraBurnout guess they wanted to screw me on install. Good thing I can do work my self. Thanks
I'm confused on how you soldered the wires outside of the car??? Please help
Its a harness that you buy. It has the 'plug' that connects to the factory wiring. They sell them at Wal-mart or your local Audio stores...or Amazon.com
Hey do u neeed that plastic thing you bought for the outside of the sterio
yes
The inside of the head unit cubby in my 2002 has a slanted plastic shroud that makes the inside not quite double din sized towards the back... It looks like at some point you cut this off (or the 2003's didn't come with it)... Do I just Dremel the crap out of that shroud to open things up in there?
+hotchalupa I only had to cut the plastic up towards the front. Mine didn't have a plastic shroud in the back. Just a metal bracket that I didn't have to mess with. If its just a plastic shroud you should be good to cut that out.
+TheRealCobraBurnout - Thanks! I'll report if I succeed in efffff'n up the inside of my dash.
hotchalupa Hope you have success
+TheRealCobraBurnout - Success! real PITA, but was successful nonetheless.
hotchalupa Very good to hear!
Where did you order dash touch up paint?
Paint: www.colorbondpaint.com/
Good job man ,I put the same unit in my 2014 Ram,, the only thing bad thing about what you did wrong was that you Installed it in a F-150..good job looks great
Its 2019 is youre dodge completely rusted out yet ya fool?
Great job man!!! Looks like a professional did it. Can you send me the link to where I can order the backup camera?
I did this vid 8 years ago but This should be a current link. Looks like it has the option for parking lines on or off too: amzn.to/3Rz4WNN
I believe this was the older version I had in this video. www.amazon.com/BOYO-VTL375HD-Rear-View-Camera/dp/B0051XB2NK/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1JG8948BVUR0I&keywords=boyo%2Bvtl375hd&qid=1695533889&sprefix=boyo%2Bvtl375hd%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-2&th=1
the panel looks similar but do you think the installation would be the same for a 1998 f150?
Not sure. I think the interior of the dash is different for some reason on the 98s but I could be wrong
Aundre Nelson use the Metra 95-5818 double din dash kit. it is for 97-03 f150s
where did you find USB pass through?
local audio store but you probably can get them on Amazon.com as well
Should have painted that too.
Great job man!!!
Thanks
Badass
That rocks
MidTnOutdoors Thank you sir
Very nice
Thanks
Dude said that a 2003 F150 LOL.
It's funny cuz I always said that that's a perfect spot for that lol😄
I know, I know...hilarious..But yes, this 2003 F150 is still my daily driver. Paid it off years ago.
TheRealCobraBurnout I got a 2003 fx4 f150 it has 80k miles on it I crashed it 5 yrs ago I bought another one exactly the same I am going to start selling parts if your interested adrianguerrero0215@gmail.com
That radio is ultra cool. Your flaky dash bezel is lame. Good vid Cobra
Ronnys games Boom
Ronnys games
Wood dash kit would do it justice
Steve 3M carbon fiber maybe
you should get one from lmc truck
Where did you get touch up paint ? Link please ? Mines is chipping bad

this is what somebody did to my 2002 f 150 and now Im stuck with the stupid double din radio I cant put a factory radio back in because of grinding the plastic out!!
The radio center part of dash is separate u can get new one from junkyard I had the same problem as you when I bought it plastic was broken $10 from junkyard good as new
We’re there any gaps you had to fill??
Gaps? No
all fords measurements for radio opening are the same size, used the same console for a 2005 for ranger, took it out then used it on my 2003 ford f1504#4
That's what she said
thanks for the very informative video man.
+dragon123443 Thanks for checking it out and commenting
15:18, 15:20, Tourette’s guy? 😂
15:17 😂😂 nah man it looks good
from outside the truck thru the window tint. Looks fine.
will this receiver display mpg?
no
not sure why he had to trim the iso mount? its a double din stereo, should just slide in like every other ford
jason hochheiser Ford did not put a true Double Din opening in this model F150.
what blue tooth mic did you use??
Ben Gleason the one that came with the radio
Hey where did you get your solder set from?
Amazon for $29 when they where on sale about 3 years ago. Looks like they are regular price right now. amzn.to/2fNoYEB but maybe you can find one similar or keep an eye on that one. It has served me well.
Ya I would like to get on to it would be a lot easier with the alligator clips
Remove bezel, lightly sand touch up spots to smooth, then reprint entire bezel... you can order almost any color in a rattle can... black is always good 😊 ready made..!!
Just saying..!
Yep
It is an F-ing nightmare! The dash is not symmetrical. It slopes back going to the right. It has the room to install but the damn overhang on the take out dash is the biggest issue! I have an 01 Expedition so it's not much different than this. I bought a cheap chinese double din touch screen. It's a third of the depth. I actually like it for a $100. It does my video, bluetooth, radio, etc. I have no need for cds or dvds when I can rip them to my computer or download straight from CZcams and put them on an sd card and right into the radio. Picture is actually good. It's not as refined as a name brand radio but it does the functions I want. It's a 180w and I am going back to look at the 240w at the Pawn store and probably buy it and swap. It has a little bit more options and hopefully some more power. I got the premium speakers but I think the previous owner installed better ones. They just have too much bass to be cheap. But back to the install. Before you even take the dash out paint is chipping. You get in there thinking, " Oh I have plenty of room!". BULL CRAP! My Dremmel had been dead for awhile and I had to trim the dash by hand with plyers and a file. I hardly ever need a Dremmel so I wasn't going to buy one just for this(now I wish I had). I really need to clean the edges on the plastic mount. So I sit the radio in and it fits. Put the dash in and it's sunk in. Pull all the crap out and then you have to put the dash back on and force the radio in until pops into place. Then the convex dashboard is in the way. I finally got it stuck in there for a couple months and yesterday I watched a video on it. THE DAMN LEFT AND RIGHT SPEAKERS WERE REVERSED. I wired correctly for color. Either my harness wasn't right or my vehicle. Swapped the wires and put it back the way it mashed together with paint still chipping. Nothing fits. The dash is expanding with it being warmer is all I can figure. So I took it all out and did a little dash trimming. Still wouldn't force back in place. So I cut out some industrial velcro and one piece on top of the radio and the other on the underside of the dash. Shoved it back in and sits perfectly flush. It's a 7" thin border screen. The original factory I think is 6"? Anyway I'm buying a cheap Dremmel to clean the visible pieces I just trimmed. Going to Autozone and getting paint and making this a done and over with project that has been going on for months now. You can never be happy with it.
Who cares
What size is the radio 6.1 or 7 “

@@TheRealCobraBurnout thank you
I didn’t want to cut the dash
@@harrysavage2596 yes, to put this one in I had to trip the top piece behind the trim. This model F150 didn't come with a full size opening for a double din for some reason.
SEM TRIM PAINT. Paint the whole dash.

hello
Just finished putting in a pioneer double din touch deck. avh-280bt. spent 6 hours. tons of dash modifications. still cant put the faceplace over top of the deck. looks kind of ghetto. seriously not worth it. should have left my single din in and left it.
That sucks
Sure does. Cant believe my luck with the truck. One problem leads to the next
I hate to hear that.
Mitch, I have the same problem. My faceplate is sticking out a good bit. The top of the head unit is too high for the faceplate to snap down. I think I will have to trim the faceplate where it fits over the top of the head unit. I don't know how TheRealCobraBurnout made his faceplate snap back on unless his head unit is slightly shorter than the Kenwood which is right at 4 inches.
Not showing where to route wires.. that the part i was looking for
What wires? I showed soldering the wiring harness..then you plug it in. I also showed splicing in for rear view.

Why order a trim piece when you can find one in a junkyard for barely anything.
Same old flaky paint issue with any old junkyard parts. but I just have left it as is all this time anyway.
Just repaint the whole thing 😉 i have to do the same
yep
Can’t watch Netflix on your Apple car play?
Not sure
You can buy a new trim piece on EBAY.
NO YOUR ALL WRONG THE SHRINK TUBE GOES ON LAST AFTER YOU SOLDER THE JOINT TOGEATHER HAHAHAH funny how we learn this the hard way Nice job man AAARRRGGGG you forgot to hook up your bluetooth man that sucks
renemanjr123 Yeah forgetting the Bluetooth mic really mad me angry. I did get it installed but what a pain to think I was all done only to have to pull the trim and head unit back out to plug it into the back. It was worth it though. Using the Bluetooth feature for hands free phone calls is awesome!
therealcobraburnout When i did mine i got all back togeather and forgot the XM connect DO!!!
