    I must've watched at least 12 (at the very least.... seriously) videos on how to do this. I can do it well. But since I've been told I have bone on bone arthritis in both knees there is obviously pain in my knees while doing this. But I get an incredibly good stretch everywhere else. You are the first person that explained, and I mean thoroughly, how to do this without pain. Honestly I didn't know the name for this until early last year. I've literally just been on CZcams watching videos in an attempt to find stretches and/or exercises to help me get stronger and alleviate pain. And I was doing what you call the pigeon pose to help my I T band, stretch out what I call the under thigh and to try and stretch out the pain that's coming from the piriformis muscle and sciatic pain. I also have been told that I have degenerative discs in my back, a disc out of place in my back and arthritis in my back. I didn't know you could get arthritis in your back. But the disc that's out of place is resting on a nerve and causing pain from my lower back to my left hip and down my left leg. So I've been on the hunt for anything I thought could help. Thank you for being so informative. I am duly impressed. 🙂

    Great video Matt. Thanks for the detailed breakdown of the key actions. I had been doing them in pigeon but your explanation about how the outside of the front knee pressing down helps with external rotation and engages the glutes brought that action more to my attention.
    Do you feel you need to keep the ankle lifted when in lying forward in pigeon?
    What do you think about lying in a passive pigeon with muscles not really engaged? Do you think that should be avoided or is another way of doing it after you have established the correct alignment with the actions you showed us?

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 5 lety

      Gayle Jann it depends, for some people passive pigeon stretch’s their hips and not their knees and so it’s totally cool. For others their hips are tight and knees flexible and so the force will always go to the knee unless the remain active the entire time. Unfortunately it’s case by case so for me I typically cue these that way everyone has the option to do it or not

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Antonio, have you tried these action? What you are likely feeling is a strain of the hamstring tendon or the IT band. These actions will likely help - especially the pressing the knee down, hips will rise

    Great knowledge, thanks! What's your take on placing the front shin to a 90 degree angle in relation to thighs?

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 4 lety

      It increases the amount of external rotation required at the hip joint which may or may not be beneficial. It really depends on the person who is practicing, what areas of their hips that are tight, their joint structure and the flexibility of external rotation. generally speaking, if the student has that range than its fine so long as they know how to actively resist the depth of stretch in order not to stretch the joint itself
