    Clearest and simplest explanation of this I've heard yet. Thanks for showing it applied to the action of raising the arms overhead, something we do often in yoga and everyday life!

    I'm currently in a 200 hr ytt program. It's just amazing what I'm reading in so many books, and so many trainings and RARELY are they aligned (pardon the pun). Pretty scary stuff given the chances of allowing injury to our students if we're not in agreement about the approaches to postures. Given that I'm smack in the middle of the anatomy portion, this approach is spot on and makes so much sense. Looking forward to reviewing all your videos!
    Thank you for sharing!

    Matt, thank you so much for all your videos that share the correct position of one's shoulders. I have a shoulder that easily comes out of my socket and poses like side plank always concern me. I wish more yoga instructors would discuss shoulder position in their classes.

    Thank you the yogiMatt for the information. I am one of those persons that was diagnosticated with shoulder impingement because of my bad position can you show us any exercises to correct this issue?

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 6 lety +2

      Hey Gabby, its hard to show exercises to correct an issue like this If the injury is current. The first thing that needs to happen in my opinion is rest and and probably ice, and an anti inflammatory diet. The reason I say that is because any exercises you do will only cause more inflammation. when it subsides then there are a bunch of exercises you can do to regain proper scapula-humeral rhythm. check out my other video - 3 steps to avoid shoulder impingement in downward dog. also I have a bunch of shoulder strengtheners on theyogimatt.com/handstand

  • @Brancaalice

    I would like to know Matt, I have shoulder impingement due hot yoga asana, I am taking medication for inflammation and doing physic therapy to regain movement, the pain subsided, but still no able to cross my arm on back. Those exercise of down dog on the video can help gain movement?

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 4 lety

      Brancaalice you would want to wait until the torn muscle has healed before trying downward dog, as this is probably the posture that caused it. The actions I’m referring to in this video are important to do in order not to cause the injury again. However the exercises you’re doing in PT are imperative to regain integrity of the muscle now. The other video I have - 3 actions to avoid shoulder impingement in down dog - study this before coming back to yoga

      Ayako Kawata try bringing your arms forward in front of your face and lifting you outer shoulders up more. It takes time to develop the strength and flexibility

      Anna Bouquet is this when the arms or up over head or is it from downward dog or some other position specifically? In other words are you weight bearing or no?

    If I’ve already been injuring myself for 8 years and spending hundreds of dollars a week between acupuncture, facet blocks, dry needling and physical therapy bc I’m in that much pain and I couldn’t admit to myself it was yoga, is there any hope for me? Or are my bones too crunched together now? And I’m 40

    Hi Matt, thanks for this video. I think I have been collapsing in the shoulders during handstands which makes my shoulder less open. How would you strengthen upward rotation? I can do it just raising my arms overhead but with the weight in handstands I find it more difficult.
    ps I love you

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 7 lety

      Hey Matthew the best way to go about it is elevating your scapula with arms overhead. I have some great shoulder exercises in my handstand strength training video, I highly recommend you start there www.theyogimatt.com/handstand

    I’m experimenting with this doing DDP yoga, bc I’ve been getting some shoulder pain lately that nsaids aren’t helping. Unfortunately I’m decently tall, and my apartment has pretty low ceilings; I can palm my ceiling pretty easily, so it’s hard a lot to get my arms up that high. Any recommendations to work around that?

  • @sergioteodosio
    @sergioteodosio Před 7 lety +1

    What if the movement away from the ears and away from each other of the shoulders would be an impact and not an action. In fact if you broaden your finger bases to softly ground your index finger bases and lengthen your arms from armpits to fingertips and from fingertips to relaxed shoulders, the shoulders will just do that (moving away from your ears and from each other) without any need to actively do something to or with them. After all, you're not the doer ;)

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 7 lety +1

      Sergio Teodosio I assume you are referring to downward dog when you are giving these cues. First of all, I didn't create this idea, it's simply an understanding I have gained based on studying the body, and I also didn't come to it on my own, I have learned from others who have done the same. I say that because I want you to realize that "the doer" or God if you will is the creator and all I am doing is trying to honor what has been created. You can ground your index finger and still have compression of your shoulders - in fact that might be part of what creates it because it may cause a student to internally rotate. You can ground the index finger and externally rotate the upper arm it's just contrasting actions. I would invite you to simply ask yourself why you feel it's not important to create muscular strength and action? Why would it be bad " to do". Is taking action not spiritual? If so why practice anything or do anything in the first place? The purpose for me here is to help students understand their shoulder joint, not to tell them a right and wrong. With the information that I have provided you can come up with your own way of practicing - just know if you do not create upward rotation while in downward dog that you are most likely compressing your joint. You can decide if that is good or bad.

    • @sergioteodosio
      @sergioteodosio Před 7 lety +1

      I was just pointing at the difference between action and impact which is apparently widely misunderstood. And yes, I refer to downward dog and any posture that has weight on your hands (like all fours). Grounding is also an impact, not an action. Actions are only broadening and lengthening, all the rest that happens are impacts. And I just speak from my own experience (with the influence of my teachers of course). The understanding that one is not the doer through yoga posture practice is much deeper than simply cognitive understanding. Well, I didn't mean to attack you, just to bring other idea to the table, so that maybe, can bring somebody to question all the "dogma" that plagues the "yoga world" in all senses. Peace

    • @TheYogiMatt
      @TheYogiMatt  Před 7 lety +1

      Sergio Teodosio I don't feel attacked - and nor do I feel the need to defend, none of this is my opinion of how to do or not do more just the observation of what is happening. You can use whatever language suits you: "lengthen your outer shoulders toward your ears" works just fine if that's what you are going for. I don't have the same language or philosophy standpoint that you do so just take this as information and do what serves you with it.

    • @sergioteodosio
      @sergioteodosio Před 7 lety

      Glad to know, you possibly know that this comments are very prone to be misunderstood. I just wanted to provoke a little curiosity, since I feel many yoga teachers just rely on what others tell them assuming it's right without even questioning if it makes sense, and since you question the validity of a classic yoga instruction (i don't like the word cue in relationship to teaching yoga). But, never mind, it's not important at all, it's only yoga....
