The first disc of the CTA album was classic -- Introduction, Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is?, and Beginnigns on side 1 - Questions 67 & 68, Listen, and Poem 58 on side 2. Every track was great.
This is from their first album, Chicago Transit Authority. It’s a classic. Lots of what was considered “Experimental Music “, at the time. It blew us away, in 1969!
Chord, you should do the entire album. It’s THAT good. Terry Kath, a GOAT 🐐
agree Jimi Hendrix said that he thought Terry Kath is a better guitarist than him
Dont forget the bass work by Peter on this track as he complements what Terry was doing extremely well.
Peter Cetera is the bomb bass player and singer.
Please, please, you have to do "Introduction" it actually is a sonic introduction to virtually every member of the band. One of Terry Kath's finest compositions. IMO🤠🤠
Album 1, Side 1, Song 1....what a Introduction to Chicago.
Kudos to you for having the b4lls to check out this deep cut! They’re all such classically well-trained musicians and composers that they made this sound like an impromptu jam session. But it is a well composed and arranged piece of art.
Except terry incredibly was basically self- taught if I’m not mistaken.. one of di many lost too soon , left to wonder what else they could’ve done!! Hendrix, Croce, Karen carpenter, buddy holly,
In the late 60's and early 70's when you went to a concert there was always a jam session during songs. So many great musicians!!!!
When someone asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world, Jimi replied “I don’t know. Ask Terry Kath.” Terry Kath was criminally overlooked as a great player. Rolling Stone magazine doesn’t even list him in the Top 100 guitarists.
Just goes to show you what Rolling Stone knows, not much.
Such a fire ass song 🔥 Terry was the man. I wish we had more music from him
Great instrumentals! Now do Question 67 and 68 and you will flip with both vocals and instrumentals!
The great and irreplaceable Terry Kath. Never has a loss been more of a gut punch on a band as his loss. RIP Terry.
I think Led Zeppelin QUIT when John Bonham died. But NOBODY replaced Kath.
And dude, this is from their debut album from 1969! It's a double album and there's only one filler track. Every other song is killer!
The band: That's just way too many ideas, that's like 58 different songs.
The band:
👁👄👁
Introduction needs to be next. First song, first album
ahh...
Now do Questions 67 and 68 when you can. I highly recommend a lyric video, as the lyrics on that one are important.
The next two Chicago songs should be Questions 67 and 68 and Dialogue part one and two
Love how the horns and the keyboard player were off having a smoke in the first half of this song.....seriously this is a classic album and it's a double too!!
As others already suggested, the first track of the first side of the first disc of their first album, the double-LP "Chicago Transit Authority" album is the appropriately titled "Introduction". Written and sung by lead guitarist Terry Kath it introduced the listener to a new band with a radical combination of rock, blues, jazz, funk and a killer horn section. You need to experience Kath's soulful baritone vocals, the smooth horns getting their own spotlight, Kath's blistering guitar and their perfect transitions. Listen closely to the lyrics as Kath speaks to the audience to ask them to give the band a chance to perform for them.
Also in that vein on this album is the track "Listen", again directed to the audience to give this new band a chance to play for them.
Well said
Terry Kath greatest guitarists
New Band to check out.
BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS, GOD BLESS THE CHILD. THIS BAND HAS BRASS SECTION LIKE CHICAGO.
THEY HAD MANY HITS🔥💯
Nice to see you exploring early Chicago- "Beginnings" says it all- get on it!
Introduction is awesome! Liberation is also.
Written by the one instrument you really dont hear in this arrangement... Robert Lamm, the keyboard player.
You do hear his voice, though.
i wish i’d seen them live … i am just hearing a lot of stuff by them i’d never heard before and had no idea how funky they were 👍🔥
I was fortunate to see them live three times in the 70s when Terry Kath was at his best. In concert, Chicago wasn't really into special effects or pyro. They came out and played music and they played it really well. That was why they were there - not to put on a visual extravaganza.
I saw them at IU at Assembly Hall and they were set up wrong. We had 4 echoes and couldn't understand a thing. We walked out. I was devastated.
@@annieh5479 sad
Kath's work on 'Sing A Mean Tune Kid' , and the layered brilliance supporting is not shy of stunning .
That's why I love the 3rd album!!
“South California Purple”
Absolutely love this song! Thanks for reacting to it!
Terry Kath
Terry Kath is one of the best guitarist of all time.
Terry was an absolute monster.
I agree, but Edward Van Halen is number 1
Easy to see how Hendrix lavished the highest regard for Terry Kath .
RIP Terry Kath. What a sad & tragic way to see it all come to an end.
Thanks for doing this Chod. I've requested it from every reactor. Danny Seraphine, Peter Cetera, and Terry Kath are one of the best power trios ever. But they had four other guys that were monsters with their own instruments so there was so much more. Thanks again. Check out "Listen"...it's the track right before Poem 58. Short, but amazing IMHO.
Sweet Home CHICAGO!!!
Yes. Favorite Band of all time because I got to know this one again about 2 years ago!!!
Oh the memory's of this great album.. thank you Chod
I bought this album after hearing it on FM at night in Indy - my friends thought it was bad, they were still listening to CC Ryder.
Yeah , the whole album ...please .
Then on to the next 6 of their albums .
Terry Kath meant that much to their vibe .
The last time I saw Chicago was back in ‘75, when they were out promoting Chicago VIII and were starting to transition from being my favorite band into their....uh....mellower period. But they were doing one of the latter period songs, which went into a li’l jam, and then they rip into this from the first album. Great, great moment.
Diplomatically said…”mellower period”! We all know what you’re thinking. 🤣
I had this album and had forgotten about this song. Thanks for reacting to it. This back when you would sit crosslegged on the floor of your room with a couple friends, pass a joint and read the liner notes.
Have you considered South California Purples?? Another fantastic song in the vein of Poem58. Thx for reactin to this one.
For me, I love their first 3 albums. Starting with Introduction.
A smooth cool groove
Such a great band, and such an unfathomable loss in Terry Kath. 😥🎸🔥✌😘🎶🎹🎷🎺💥💞
That raw nasty fuzz tone guitar was blowin' our minds back then.
Best rock guitar song of all time. Period.
Early Chicago with Terry Kath thanks Chod
While you're on the first album give a listen to the song Listen. It's definitely worth a listen.
What an excellent reaction and solid review of each instrument or section
As good as everyone is in this it is clearly driven by Terry Kath
Especially in the trio
He tragically died right before he was going to show us what he could do post Chicago
Terry Kath!!! Super Natural. 💔🎸RIP
Thanks for the reaction. Looks like you really enjoyed it. Classic Terry Kath Chicago off their 1st album.😁
Thank you! Great reaction. I have to say, as a lifelong Chicago/Kath fan, now age 60 who heard all sorts of snide comments about Chicago whenI was in high school, I love how this specific deep cut song is bubbling up in CZcams reaction requests and actual reactions.
Chod, I am glad you are enjoying Chicago, especially early Chicago. You need to check out a group called Chase. The guitar playing in nothing next to Terry, but the brass section will blow you away. Thanks for keeping the music coming.
I have their "get it on" lp on a Quad dvdr.
And CTA also.
@@progger53 how awesome for you.
As said before by many, Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best, even without equal at the time.
CTA, their first album, a double album, was recorded in a little over two weeks. That's amazing.
Nice that you're going back into the early days of Chicago.
Sublime understated drumming keeps the temo perfect.
Chod, this band had an incredible progression musically from 1969-1977. When guitarist Terry Kath died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1977 their whole style changed to more commercial and boring songs that made them millions.
Chicago Transit Authority
Chicago I I
Chicago III
Live at Carnegie Hall
Chicago V
Chicago VI
Chicago VII
Chicago VIII
Chicago X
Chicago XI
That’s really the best they have.
Old Days
Stone Of Sysyphus. Are the only 2 songs I like post Kath.
Chicago became a bit more commercial with each successive album after CTA, but the change really accelerated after Kath's death.
Mad Props for picking this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That guitar tone though
I really appreciate these reaction videos mostly because you're giving exposure to so many of Chicago's great album cuts. Sure, their hits were top notch but the non hits have always deserved more attention then they've gotten in the past. Somebody else recently did reactions for "It Better End Soon" and "Poem For the People" from the second album, which I appreciated. To me, on albums 1 thru 11 (Terry Kath years) this band could not produce a bad track. They gave so much to listen to and so much variety. Every new album was an aural adventure and treat for the ears. My suggestion would be perhaps "Loneliness Is Just a Word" from the third album. It's short and sweet at about two and a half minutes but it's filled with joy with great Terry Kath vocals and driving bluesy rhythms and horns.
Chod! You have reviewed one of my top 10 all-time favorite songs. I'm glad you loved it as i knew you would. Definitely your style
This is an amazing album which I bought way back and still play
Awesome guitar and drums.
Same album: "South California Purples". As a Cali guy you owe it to yourself, :-) It's really cool, and a bit different for Chicago, I think it's right up your alley, Chod.
YES !!!!!!! EXCELLENT suggestion !!!!
@@neilphelan145 Right on. I love your enthusiasm! :-) I share it.
Terry Kath was a good guitar player. God rest his soul.he died in 1978. Self inflicted gun shot.what a shame
Peter cetera, most underrated bass player ever
Has to be one of the most bad ass songs ever🤘❤️
Terry absolutely killing it on the axe. WOW! What a tone.☺🎵🎸🎧
I'd like to see you get back to blood sweat and tears. Either the song "you make me so very happy" or "and when I die"
Please give Introduction a listen from this same album. Written and sung by Terry Kath (rip), guitar, who could not chart the music. Charted by James Pankow, trombone"who said it was "daunting" . Song has some 19/8 time signature. Danny Seraphine, drummer said it's the most challenging song he has ever played. Song is driven by outstanding bass playing , Peter Cetera, which is often overlooked because the entire song is a masterpiece of individual performances welded together brilliantly, with a horn arrangement that will melt your brain. But wait, there's more. All that and a guitar solo that is my favorite of all guitar solos of all time. Thank you. Respectfully submitted.
Please also consider "A Hit by Varèse" from Chicago V. Another excellent Robert Lamm song.
what great music !
Must listen to the Whole Album! Rolling down US 12 in my 69 Dodge Charger R/T.
Chicago was a complete band
RIP Terry Kath. Unbelievable guitarist...
CTA and Chicago #2....still in my Top Albums List for progressive American Soul Musak!!!
If your doing Poem 58 you may as well do Jethro Tull Hymn 43
This is the best song ever done
Love it! Everything that happens is the right thing at the right time.
best not to question any possible mind enhancing substances😎
South California Purples next plz sir
As a musician in a Band we never do any drugs or alcohol when jamming because it screws up everyone's timing.
Chicago Transit Authority... the only Chicago for me.
oh and please: "Introduction" and "Ballet for a girl from Buchannon"
I'm an old fart that's played in bands. Nothing big. But I've always said that the hardest part of playing any song is how to end it so it doesn't turn into a half hour jam! lol
I also coined a term for when our guitarist or keyboard player goes off-script and their solo continues longer than it's supposed to.
I say that they're having a "Zappa Moment". ☺
I have no problem with that. I love 💕 me a “Zappa Moment “. 😉
😊👍
Great choice! Now check out Blood, Sweat and Tears, Blues, PT2
Great reaction! If you want to see what it's like in the studio to play this music, check out "Leonid and Friends", a touring Russian tribute band who does Chicago like no other. Their studio videos will cement your love for Chicago (also some Earth, Wind, and Fire songs).
Whoop Whoop!!!!!
Yah this one with your lady, pls .. Chod. This is my fave song evah.
Just like Dan Gabbert said, this was the very first album by this group when they were known as CTA. The more refined ,toned down group that played "Saturday in the Park" was many years and several albums later. More like this is "South California Purples" on the same album.
Carnegie Hall versinos of South California Purples and Sing a Mean Tune Kid are KLLER Terry moments, as well!
You are hearing Terry Kath on lead guitar. I would put him up against, Jeff Beck, Hendix, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, any of them.
how about reacting to Sing a Mean Tune Kid by Chicago
Check out live version of 'does anyone know what time it is'
Not too shabby.
'Question 67 And 68"
Liberation, last song on this album...
ROCK OUT!!!
Their best imho ✌🤘
Oh man you are going hard today I see.
how about reacting to Free Form Guitar by Chicago
