Thanks for the effort. This is the side of Chicago many today aren't familiar with except as us old timers. The whole album is worth a listen from front to back especially their cover on the Spencer Davis Group's [with Steve Winwood] "I'm A Man". There are some live performances on YT from Tanglewood you might be curious to see. Their guitarist, Terry Kath, was once said by Jimi Hendrix to be his favorite guitarist, probably one of many though as Jimi was always humble.

I had this album as all of them until Terry Kath died and the sound changed to sappy love songs. They had no choice really , their soul of the band died. RIP. killer album. I don't remember all the songs. But this is a less heard song that is amazing. Guitar- Terry Kath. Mind blowing....love the brass of Chicago. So damn talented

Man.... If you are a bass player you ought to check out the entire Chicago Transit Authority album. This album is in my opinion the very best bass performance rock album of all time. Peter Cetera's bass playing on this album is incredible.

Even Jimi Hendrix said terry Kath could do it all on guitar. The last half or so sounds like a session with The Mothers of Invention joining in. Very cool. Terry was gone too early at 31.

As Moe Feaux said below...mostly only us old farts. For me CTA is one of the top 5 BEST rock-roll LPs ever recorded. Listen to the whole LP and light up a joint, it will floor you. Then listen to II and III after the live IV, things changed.

On Chicago's first album Bassist Peter Cetera played a P direct and thru an ampeg b15. Poem 58 is on the 1st album. Thanks for this reaction. I recommend trying out the 1st song on this album named Intoduction. "Written" by guitar player Terry Kath RIP who could not chart the music. Charted by James Pankow, trombone, who arranged the horns. Times signature include (memory don't fail me) 4/4 3/8 and 19/8. Great bass playing on this tune as well. When I first heard this album in 1970 I loved how prominent the bass was and is. Perhaps this was because chicago producer James W Guercio played bass.

My father was a trumpet player who played with jazz bands in night clubs. When one of his bands decided they needed to play more current material, someone lent him this album so he could learn the horn parts. That is how I first learned about this album. It got some airplay on Top 40 after the singles were released for Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is and Beginnings. Rock stations would play other tracks like I'm a Man, Southern California Purples, and Questions 67 and 68. I don't recall ever hearing Poem 58 on the radio though, and unfortunately, nothing on this album gets played on radio anymore, which is such a shame.

It got some airplay on the then-new FM "Underground" stations in the early days of AOR (album-oriented rock) as did some of the other songs on this LP.

I listened to it for the first time today, not on this channel. Then I listened to it 5 more times, now i absolutely love it.It is a guitar jam and almost like two songs pieced together, which is what my mind had to do,piece it together.Several different guitar riffs and nice base too.Maybe not the absolute best song ever but it's now a go to song for me.

The base player, the guitarist, and the keyboardist all did lead vocals. Sometimes, by themselves, other times trading off in the same song. The guitarist 🎸 was Terry Kath.
Their first two or three albums were double record albums. Some experiments failed (I'm looking at you "Free Form Guitar "..
Try out 25 or 6 to four, or I'm a Man

Fun fact: As The Chicago Transit Authority, they were playing at The Whisky A Go Go one night and in the audience was Jimi Hendrix. As the band was coming out of the dressing room to do their second set, standing there was Jimi. He looked at them and said "you guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" CTA said yeah and became Hendrix's opening act on tour.
Chicago's trombone player James Pankow told that meeting story in an interview with the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. It's posted on CZcams.
Listen to the entire CTA debut album in sequence and you will be amazed. Founding guitar player Terry Kath was the heart, soul and balls of the band from formation until his accidental death in January 1978. After Terry died they lost their guiding influence and became a sappy ballad band lead by bass player Peter Cetera and new manager David Foster, who also deemphasized the horn section. Terry was with Chicago on their albums from CTA through Chicago XI. That is considered "Classic Chicago".
For a LIVE performance, watch their 1971 Tanglewood concert, in particular when they play 25 Or 6 To 4. Terry SHREDS his Strat, Peter Cetera is singing lead vocals and on his Fender bass.
