Elvis had the best voice I have ever heard. He was also the best looking man I have ever seen and the absolute ultimate performer. He is the GOAT!
We all can see the tremendous talent Elvis had, but the back story of his life is incredible. Born in poverty in Mississippi to the biggest star known all over world.

Elvis was blond as a child, but by his teen years his hair had turned chestnut brown. He used to "grease up" his hair in the 1950's before he became famous with vaseline. He started dying his hair jetblack since 1956. And he did get a tan for this TV show. He was a gorgeous man.
It wasn't literally vaseline -- one of the commonly used products back then was Brylcreem, another was Pomade; Elvis did say in an early interview that he used Brylcreem.
It wasn't always jet black. When Larry Geller was with him it was dark brown. It was dark brown in the 68 soecial.
He died his hair with shoe polish.
@@cathyhetzel7692 You made a blanket statement which is not totally correct. He used shoe polish only in the early days when he was young & didn't have money. You can be damn sure as money started coming in he was well able to afford hair dye.
Elvis was a creation from god, a masterpiece, the Mona Lisa of the entertainment world. There can only be one original nothing else comes close.
"Somebody pulled the plug...." totally unphased, no shouting, no tantrum. He just carries on singing where he left off. What a pro! What a nice guy! His fellow singers and musicians loved him.
He sang every genre of music recording over 700 songs all special. Whether he was in his white jumpsuit or black leather he always sang his heart out. He danced too, "polk salad Annie" Vegas 1970, "Patch it Up" or "Suspicios Minds" all are awesome. Thanks for this great reaction, been a fan since 1956. He was a man who loved his fans.

Roy Orbison, blues legend BB King, and the great Carl Perkins all said the same thing about Elvis....he was a total package, great talent, great looks, charisma, dancer and actor.
Robert Plant was a huge Elvis fan; Elvis met him backstage after one of his concerts & they talked for a while. Plant & the rest of the band were there to see Elvis in concert. The original Rock Star, Elvis had tons of fans & still has millions to this day. He was considered the 20th century cultural icon not only for his music but also for his style in clothing, his hair & his swag. Glad you enjoyed the song. Elvis had blond hair as a child; by his teen years it was chestnut brown & yes, he dyed it black for his first movie & continued to do so throughout the rest of his life except for when he was in the army from 1958 - 1960. Elvis oftentimes got tanned in Hawaii before major events like this Special. As for the curling, it's hard to say. Elvis had a patch of hair that would not stay in place no matter what he put on it invariably, it'd fall down over his brow; if you watch more Elvis performances, you'll see it happen time & time again. I don't listen to Elvis that often, but he unquestionably was the man. Astronomically, ridiculously talented. I mean, he invented rock'n'roll. Some people had made important attempts before, but Elvis was the one who cracked the code and put rock'n'roll properly on the map. Everything about him as an entertainer is amazing, but as a singer he's head and shoulders above all the rest. Great seeing him on the channel. More, please.

This was actually an outtake from the special, aside from some production numbers Elvis recorded two standup and two sit-down shows, for the 1968 Singer television special, now known as the 68 Comeback Special. Elvis dyed his hair black and actually tanned outside usually with an electric fan.

Look, I grew up with Elvis music. My grandma and mom, and basically my whole family were huge fans. My grandma went to one of his concerts and caught on of his autographed sweat scarfs he'd toss out in the audience. I'm a 58 yr old straight man, but he's truly my man crush! Lol.
He helped Danny Thomas open Saint Jude. 1961. He raised the Arizona at pearl harbor. He's the top 5 celebrity's in America history for giving to charity's. He did hundreds of shows for charity's. He has a Elvis house where you can stay for a year for free. His estate still gives.
As you commented he was unique, singing Rock 'n Roll through to Neo opera and and just about every genre in between. Supposedly sold over 1 billion records and good as they were, his live performances, always unpredictable were always something else.

Elvis has been my only idol for 50 years now. He was an absolute phenomenon. I thought the young lady had great questions and I for one, appreciate that she asked them. He did dye his hair jet black for the most part and his tan is absolutely real.
I was in high school in the 1970’s. All the kids were into Chicago or Elton John. I loved Elvis but I never said anything. I was already ‘uncool’ so I wasn’t going to give the brats more ammunition to harass me. I’m old now and I still love Elvis.

I love the sit down sessions from this special. The final edit that aired in 1968 only used a few minutes of these sessions but there are two full sessions that were made available later and include marvelous ad lib moments and really show off his amazing charisma ❤ He was tan for this special as he had just returned from Hawaii but he wasn’t above using a fake tan when he needed to. He made no secret of dying his hair. He liked it that way and didn’t mind saying so. Great reaction 🎉

My Dad was stationed in Friedburg near Frankfurt Germany as an Army VIP transport driver and one day was sent to the airport to pick up an unspecified VIP..yep, it was Elvis. Dad said Elvis would sing and play with Army musicians (dad sat in on one occassion) but these were very brief as Elvis had personnel stop these apparently because Elvis's contract disallowed "performances" while he was enlisted. Dad said Elvis was super friendly to all GI's while there. Edited...the base was near Frankfurt....
And he fell in love with drugs in the army too.

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis. One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.
Elvis, apparently, was much better looking in the flesh than he already was on screen and in photos. Hard to believe. So many women and (heterosexual) men openly said he was the most beautiful human being they'd ever seen. Also that he was one of the nicest people one could imagine. As music critic, Jon Landau said “There is something magical about watching a man who has lost himself find his way back home.” After 8 long years cocooned in his movie career, Elvis had lost his relevance as a rock n roller. Elvis’ manager, Tom Parker, had negotiated with NBC to fund a new Elvis movie. They agreed as long as Elvis agreed to do a TV special for them. Parker said yes to Elvis doing a Christmas Special where he would sing only Christmas songs, say thank you and good night, nothing more. Fortunately the team NBC put together for the special, including young and very relevant Steve Binder … and this clip is part of the fabulous result, a defining event in Elvis’ legacy for people to enjoy 56 years later.

Elvis didn’t have long hair until the early 70’s but in all his movies 31 of them in the 50’s and 60’s, you’ll see his hair with that little flip in front. Sometimes on the left side sometimes on the right side and like here sometimes in the middle. It came from his favorite comic book hero Captain Marvel Jr. when he was a still kid in Tupelo Mississippi. Captain Marvel Jr. always has that little flip in front. His hair was originally blonde but as he got older it got darker like a light brown. He said he dyed his hair black because he liked how one of his favorite actors (Tony Curtis) looked with black hair in black and white movies. During his early movies sometimes it’s the brownish color and sometimes it’s black, for example his first movie “Love Me Tender” 1956 it’s the light brownish color and his second movie “Loving You” 1957 it’s black. I think “Kid Galahad” and “Follow That Dream” both in 1962 are the only two movies in color that he has his natural hair color. It was black after 1962 but because of his movie contracts he only did movies back then, no concerts or tv, until 1969, the movie contracts ended and he opened in Las Vegas on July 31,1969 the first week there he broke the attendance record. He played there twice a year 4-6 weeks each time for the next 7 years, 636 straight sold out shows at the International Hotel. Barry Manilow who started there in the 70’s like Elvis did just broke that record Sept 21, 2023 but the record that took Elvis 7 years to get, took Barry Manilow over 50 years to break.
his tan was natural probably from his lavish lifestyle and time spent in hawaii, and as far as his hair, yes he dyed it jet black, in the beginning of the show it was up and slicked back in his typical style and the front would slowly fall down throughout the set which gave it that curled look
I believe he went on a sunny vacation right before the ‘68 special to get a nice tan ? He also did that before the ‘72 MSG garden concerts (to great effect), if I’m not mistaken ? I remember him saying something about it during his press conference ? And before the Aloha from Hawaii show ? How long was he in Hawaii before the taping started ? But in all film and tv studios for singers and actors… they also use make-up. But Elvis would have looked and did look sensational without any of that stuff.
Elvis, like many people, looked great with a nice tan, check out movies like Charro. But above all, it was his animalistic charisma and talent that made him unforgettable, the most. He had it all, and everything more and better than the other male singers.
Every time I see him perform now, I think without the drugs, the terrible management and hangers on, how much more great work he'd have done. Legend.

So glad you're including some Elllllvis on this channel. I remember a Chris Squire interview where he said "It's funny when people say Yes is a rock band. For me rock and roll was Elvis and all that." Of course he was a major influence on John Lennon and the Beatles, which was where they got all of those mannerisms like throwing a "Weeeelll..." in before other vocal lines. Speaking of The Beatles, dying hair goes back farther than you might think. Ringo died his hair to hide a gray streak back in the early 60's.
I was 4 yo when this was aired and the record came out. We had the record but I remember watching this on TV. Made a huge impression on me. This is Elvis for me. Unfortunately I more resemble fat Elvis. And I want that guitar!! In ‘75-‘76 he played Mac Court, the old basketball arena at the University of Oregon in Eugene and my Sister and my Mom went with some of my sisters friends. It was a HUGE deal. My Mom didn’t go as a chaperone, my sister was 23, she went because she’d been an Elvis freak since 1956 when she was 24 yo.
He dyed his hair black for effect as it looked better in photos. His hair does get tussled as the performance continues so it doesn't stay like this. Elvis is known to take a holiday, to Hawaii, etc to get tanned in advance of a concert.

Those who are new to elvis, I suggest staying away from mid 1960s movies & the soundtracks and focus first on his Greatest Hits, Gold Records, and songs he is best known for, and strive for Studio Versions. Everyone is this modern era must be stimulated by video, but do yourself a favor and close your eyes and listen to his best studio work before going live. This clip is an exception to that rule, but I still maintain his studio version of this song is worth also hearing.

Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin considered Elvis as the worlds best singer . Led Zeppelin also went to an Elvis concert in L.A. in 1974 and got to meet Elvis at his hotelroom after the concert. There are several interviews wit Plant talking about this.

Elvis was THE MASTER at sailing right along no matter what went wrong -- he could flub lyrics, have microphone issues, etc. & he may make a joke or just go on like nothing happened.
He was blond as a youngster & dyed his hair very black & was always styled before a performance. Regarding the "tan" -- it is makeup. NO ONE goes in front of a camera or on film without makeup. You can also see the slight difference between the makeup line & his skin color by his jacket collar, & lighter hand color -- it's more noticeable in some versions more than others.

Dude Zeppelin Hendrix were huge Elvis fans so u grew up with the influence lol a lot of artists are Elvis fans you’d be surprised. Zeppelin has an interview about the time he met Elvis it’s a great interview. At the beginning of this performnce dust ing the evening his hair wasn't messy it was st licked brd, only when he moved did that perfect curl of hair flop down. He was amazingly talented and stunning to look at. Fantastic genetics ft or looks but ultimately his genitic an estry contributed to the illnesses that killed him.

Yes, Elvis did dye his hair black and had done since 1957. He was naturally a dark blonde. His hairdresser said Elvis’ hair was very fine but he had a lot of it. I’m sure the make up and hair people on this production made the most of his beautiful hair, including the lick that fell over his forehead. Elvis went to Hawaii for a few weeks prior to filming to specifically work on his tan. Interestingly, the power brokers at NBC and from the sponsor, were not going to allow any of the black leather suit footage (2 x 30 minute sitdown shows and 2 x 30 minute stand up segments) to be aired because Elvis was sweating and his hair was messed up!
