Bull Moose is the best! I already own the first Scream Factory release and imported the Arrow release with the remaster during a sale. Both releases have different special features, which made that double dip worth it. This may be a $7 pick up at some point, but I'm in no rush for thirds. Thank you for the great review as always :)

I haven’t seen it but I just read the plot on Wikipedia. A group of Norwegian scientists found an alien spacecraft and the Thing escaped. It assimilated some of them just like in the 1982 version. At the very end of the movie there are still a couple Norwegians left they realize that a dog is actually the Thing. The dog escapes and starts running and they chase after it in a helicopter trying to shoot it and kill it. At the end the dog is running towards the American station. That’s what we see at the beginning of John Carpenter’s 1982 The Thing. If I remember right, the Americans don’t know what they’re doing and why they would be chasing a dog and one of the Norwegians accidentally blows up the helicopter and the other Norwegian yells something to the Americans but they can’t understand him and one of them shoots him. I actually haven’t seen it in a little while so my memory is a little fuzzy. My 4K copy just showed up today. I plan on watching it tomorrow.
So, yeah, it is basically the same story in that the Thing assimilates and kills people, but there’s a little more backstory since it actually shows the alien spacecraft and proves without a doubt that the Thing is an alien.

I noticed the Scream Factory release has a much "bluer" color tone than any other release, not just the new 4K. Scream said their scan was supervised by Dean Cundy, so I'm guessing it was intentional. Perhaps it was done to give the movie a "colder" feel? Regardless, it never bothered me, but after comparing it to the new 4K, I can see how that choice actually prevented the colors from really shining in some parts ( it's still an awesome release). I just bought this and I love it except the "Terror Takes Shape" documentary isn't a separate feature. You have to watch the movie with the U-Connect feature on and occasionally a picture in picture will pop up to show a clip from the documentary. I don't know if we get to see the entire documentary or not, I think probably not, and I really wish I had the option to watch it on its own. The other extras, the outtakes, are either included in this U-Connect bullcrap, or they're not on the standard blu-ray disc. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing.
The bonus features aren't included in the digital version, which is pretty common unfortunately. I don't understand why the commentary and other bonus items aren't part of the digital packaging.
I have a regular blu-ray player, I haven't felt the need to get one of the ultra HD ones, and I can vouch for the movie looking pretty damn good on the regular blu-ray. Normally, I watch the digital copy but, again, the only way to get the extras is by watching the disc. In this case, it sucks how they packaged these extras.

Often times there are significant differences wrt audio tracks, grain/sharpness, and color timing from one release to another. Sometimes even the framing is different (If memory serves the first Friday the 13th blu ray screwed up the framing and left part of the image out). Best to hang on to different releases esp. if it turns out that the "new and improved" one leaves something out or has some major flaw.

One of my favorite horror movies of all time! I read the book before I saw the movie as a kid and... oh boy; what a surprise when I saw how closely it followed the book and how awesome it was. One correction is that the new 2010 Thing movie is not a remake, it's a prequel; telling the story of the Norwegian crew (That the 80's Thing artic team found the base of with all the dead bodies). Great review man!

This was indeed a difficult title to grab. I preordered mine from Diabolik. However, the collector (of very certain titles) in me wanted that Steelbook too and that was nowhere within a few hundred miles of me from BB so I paid double to a 'bay'er. I did stop into a couple Bankruptcy-Buy's and the standard version was nowhere in sight so was glad to have ordered it elsewhere anyway. Tough title to locate for sure. Fantastic film and one of my favorites of all time! Thanks for the vid.

I wouldn’t say the Scream Factory transfer Blu-ray looked dull. Just that it has a slightly different colour palette/grading. I think they made it a deliberately (in some shots) more cold/blue color temperature. Probably to suit the cold theme of the film. However the new version looks far more correct and better with regards to colour temp. But taking nothing away from the Scream Factory Blu-ray - because remarkably it could be argued that it was actually more detailed in shots - in the snow it was especially visible - it’s visible in the shot comparisons here where they’re standing around the fire. It was a fantastic transfer - probably added some extra sharpening during the making/grading of the disk - but still works.
I can’t wait to see this one though - purely for the more correct colour palette.
