They Live is indeed another masterpiece by John Carpenter. I love both of them, They Live and The Thing. They're two completely different kind of movies, so it's really hard for me to decide which one of them is my favourite. However, they are my two favourite movies by John Carpenter, putting Halloween in third place.
I own the British Collector's Edition by Studio Canal of They Live and I've also ordered a Japanese LaserDisc of the movie. Great movie, in my opinion.

The Thing has been one of my biggest 4K wishes for a while now! It is my favorite John Carpenter movie (especially since we've gotten all those other nice Carpenter 4K's), and one of my favorite horror movies in general. Judging by the screenshots I have seen and comparing it to Blu Ray screenshots, it looks like the 4K is gonna look awesome! I completely agree with you. The Thing is an absolute masterpiece. I've never understood why it took them so long to release such a classic on 4k Blu-ray. This is one of those movies I expected to be among one of the first 4k Blu-ray releases back when the format was introduced. Well, whatever. They did them and at the last minute some idiot in a suit at the top overrides everyone that worked on the movie. When the movie came out it had all but eliminated the regular effects and did a CGI redo and basically ruined the movie. It is ok but I wanted to those regular effects instead of their crappy CGI.
It's passable. But the Box-office says it all. What a mess. I loved the 1982 movie and now just waiting on the 4k disc to arrive. It really puts CGI in trash heap as they say. The new DTS:X audio track SUCKS. This is a very disappointing remix. It's not as robust as the previous DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix or the 4.1 mix. A lot of background audio and music cues are barely audible and in some instances, completely muted. Also, the decrease in bass is dramatic. I found it so annoying that I'll be returning my purchase to Best Buy for a credit refund.

I have to disagree. Halloween is a better film.

And you have every right to do that. Halloween is still my favorite.

Glad for the prequel? Are you nuts?

@@midlevelmedia - I mean, you can like it, and that's fine, mate. But if you can't appreciate how having things mysterious or unexplained serves a horror or thriller story better... I mean, I don't know what to tell ya.
Other than, in my opinion, you don't understand the intricacies of good story telling, and would therefore struggle to discern good stories from bad.

@@insrtcowjoke Don't really think that's a fair assessment to make based on this one opinion. I understand where you're coming from. I hate Rob Zombie's "Halloween" because of its explanation of the Michael Myers character. A character that needs no explanation in my opinion. In this particular case, I didn't mind a little backstory, because we already knew what happened, the prequel just fleshed it out, and I don't think it took away from the original at all. If anything, it enhanced it for me. Like I said, a prequel/explanation, when done right, can really add to a story and universe. Not needed most of the time, but it doesn't always have to be a bad thing.

@@midlevelmedia - I agree with the core of your opinion, on that front. But for this case...
Well, so the Norwegian camp just happened to be run by Americans? When the bases are clearly research bases run by individual nations?
Why is all the research written and recorded in Norwegian if it was run by Americans?
Where are the abandoned vehicles at the crashed UFO where the ending climax happened?
Why does the thing do completely uncharacteristic things like openly attack people on a helicopter in full view of others, when it is clearly opportunistic and smart enough to not reveal itself unless exposed?
How does it gain knowledge from prey like names, locations, purposes, etc., yet forget what piercings the victim had/it should have?
I mean, I can go on and on to tear the inconsistencies of the prequel apart. And I'm just a casual fan. So I'd agree with you, if the movie maintained consistency. But it doesn't. It doesn't even come close. It botches basic concepts of the thing, all in the name of explaining an event that needed no explanation and was better left unexplained, from a narrative standpoint.
But hey, you don't have to agree. It you enjoyed it, you enjoyed it. And despite our discussion here, my intent isn't to ruin your fun or enjoyment. I enjoy a healthy discussion.
But ultimately, my point for it all is that I'm not going to be able to agree with your take, because we clearly have differing ideas of what constitutes a good prequel, and potentially a good movie entirely. And that's fine. Diversity of thought and opinion is ultimately a wonderful thing. But sometimes that means people just won't see eye to eye.
      C'est la vie. :)
