How Alien didn’t make the cut is beyond me. That 4K is incredible, and IMO head and shoulders above Jaws, for example. To this day it’s the most impressive transfer I’ve seen, and the movie is a masterpiece.
I agree, I really liked that one. Jaws is good too. Here's the thing though - neither of the Blu-rays of those were bad either.
100% agree with your Lawrence of Arabia recommendation, I watched it in 4K recently and my jaw was on the floor. One of the best looking movies I've ever seen.
I picked that up but have not had a chance to see it all yet. I did preview it a bit and it looks good.
Even the superbit DVD of Lawrence of Arabia is stunning for a DVD. The blu ray is also spectacular.
Blade Runner on 4K is amazing, and one of the few where the sound blew me away just as much as the visuals. The plethora of aerial shots with ships flying really made the most of my Dolby atmos system!
I use this disc as my reference. I was dialing in my system and that opening shot of the city with the towers shoot fire made the sub rumbled. My upstairs neighbor came down to see what was going on and we ended up watching the whole film together.
I love Blade Runner but was disappointed they didn’t include all the other versions with the 4k. I like the commentary that decker gives.
Please make a list of great looking 4Ks of Terrible Movies, I'd unironically enjoy that.
Avatar: the Way of Water, absolutely beautiful film, terrible script
Ghoulies 2 is out on 4K, and Jaws 2. I'm still waiting for Shout Factory to put Garbage Pail Kids The Movie out on 4K, it's so bad but fun, but still painfully bad.
I would recommend these 10 4Ks (in no particular order):
1. Back to the Future trilogy
2. Blade Runner
3. The Matrix trilogy
4. Django
5. Misery
6. Lawrence of Arabia
7. Gladiator
8. Braveheart
9. Spiderman trilogy
10. Top Gun: Maverick
Some great recommendations. I would also add The Thing. Incredible 4k.
"...but it's a shit movie." Classic.
I suggest also Alien, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, and AKIRA to name a few.
The Matrix was my first DVD, my first Blu-ray, and my first 4K. One of my forever favorite movies and an excellent picture and sound demo.
i saw a lot of guys hating on the matrix release over the years, something tint related iirc.
@adacPROKYON I mean, I don't have an og copy to compare to so maybe that's why.
@@adacPROKYON Opposite, the old matrix blu ray was incredibly inaccurate, the new release is much closer to the original film prints
i just watched 2001 for the first time on 4k last night! i was absolutely baffled. looked incredible. could not believe it was made in 1968. still not sure about the ending, but 85% is 100% worth watching lol
Awesome! I loved it on 4K too!!
The Ten Commandments is a great one.
Great story. Amazing Picture
Your very brief mention of "Singing in the Rain" deserves a good look as well. For a 70+ year old movie, the restored 4K both looks and sounds incredible.
I think Spartacus looks amazing on 4k as does Alien.
Alien is also stunnning in 4k. It's like a new Nostromo.
That Gemini Man stray has me dying LMAO
I’m ducking from Will Smith’s incoming slap!
😂@@JeffRauseo
@@JeffRauseo🤣🤣🤣🤣
I regret not going to see it in the cinema. I was put off by poor reviews but will there ever be another chance to see something in 120fps? Doubtful.
Awesome list.
I'm one of those aliens who watched 2001 for the first time on 4K, and i was blown away by the visual quality of the restoration, it could have been filmed yesterday...
2001 was the first VHS I ever owned at the age of 11 in 1986, so I've grown up watching each successive format improve on it!
Just got that Lawrence steelbook and I think it is incredible. Guns of Navarone steelbook was amazing too.
Damn. No love for The Revenant. I think that disc is massively underrated for reference level.
It’s so hard to do just 10! That one is also great
@@JeffRauseo i hear that. Very true lol
A Stunning Picture. Absolutely
Interstellar is the reason why I got into collecting 4K movies. Such a good movie with an incredible 4K transfer!
Hey Jeff, I never see any CZcamsrs ever mention any of the BBC Earth documentaries. They are great for showing off your 4k system.
Are you referring to the David Attenborough ones? I'm pretty sure Jeff way pre covid time has spotlighted them before which is why I got mine. I have Planet Earth 2, Blue Planet 2, Seven Worlds One Planet and Dynasties. The 2 issues is David himself ruining it with the guilt tripping climate change preachy stuff he sprinkles in after such an amazing presentation. Plus they're on the more pricey side of things on the format, BBC being greedy for sure. It's off putting because you could get a Boutique of a movie you know you love for a similar price point.
@@randallflagg7637 Yeah, those are what I meant. You just seldom hear them featured in any CZcamsrs’ “Films You Must Own” even though in my opinion they are some of the best looking ones in my collection. I pretty much have all of the ones issued on 4k. I thought about it while watching Frozen Planet II today.
@@dmichaelelkins1 My friend, let me tell you something. 4K Blu-ray and 4K TV? Absolute garbage. 1080p Blu-ray and 1080p TV are the real deal. Sure, 4K might have more pixels, but when it comes to picture quality and overall experience, 1080p is the way to go. Sorry buddy, but 4K just isn't worth the hype. Keep it classic with 1080p. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Agree on selections
Enjoyed Blade Runner sequel a lot more than I'd thought I would.
Speaking of westerns, I'd recommend Unforgiven. Great movie, great remaster, not very expensive
Great video Jeff.
Denzel won the Oscar for glory!😊

Hey Jeff. Glad I found you on Letterboxd. Thanks for all you do!
Good recommendations... the only slight criticism I have is referring to The Red Shoes as a musical. Even though this is a backstage drama that includes a lengthy ballet sequence that runs somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes, you don't see characters breaking into song and dance throughout. Anyway, like I said, it's a minor criticism. I have many of these on 4K, and your list is spot on!
I have not started collecting 4K yet, but Interstellar is my favorite movie so I'm pumped it made this list!

Love the video my man. Bravo 🎉
Thank you Jeff.
Aliens looks so crispy!
Agreed. My vote is that Aliens is the best 4K restoration EVER!
A lot of good pics. I am surprised I didn’t see The Fugitive on your list. One that would be on my list would be Young Guns.
The Fugitive is a stunner
@@JeffRauseo yes it is. Such a good movie in general.
@@JeffRauseoomg Fugitive is a banger
Have seen 2001 in 35mm and 70mm both at the Coolidge Corner in Boston, I think I might try and see the 70mm print at the Somerville theater which I think you’re referring to. It will blow your mind in 70mm!
That’s the one! I have my tickets!
Excellent content, Jeff.
Very very good hit with "The Red Shoes" young man. Glad you know about these films.
Awesome list. Please make a video list of top 10 audio 4ks .
Thank you for this. Do you have a similar video for bluray players?
Thanks for this list! I have never considered most of them.
Great fun video! I would add Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Great video on where to start on collecting 4K films. I always thought the older films looks the best in 4K but be wary on who is restorating them because of the James Cameron's AI True Lies rendering. Though I bought Batman Mask of the Phantasm on 4K and man it is such a great 4K version for $18
Great Show as usual.
Great list!
Nice video, and good reminder. I still have a few of these to get.
My friend, let me tell you something. 4K Blu-ray and 4K TV? Absolute garbage. 1080p Blu-ray and 1080p TV are the real deal. Robocop and american warewolf too
Digging the baseball metaphors
Great list. You inspired me to watch the 4K Jaws that's been sitting on my shelf for a long time (I've seen it many times on other media). It was the first movie I watched on my new TV and it was really great on 4K.
One suggestion: I think you've mentioned before how great old black & white movies look on 4K. I don't think you had any on your list. Two that I think would be good additions are Paths of Glory or (if you're overloaded with Kubrick movies) Double Indemnity.
My friend, let me tell you something. 4K Blu-ray and 4K TV? Absolute garbage. 1080p Blu-ray and 1080p TV are the real deal. I've got most of these already in my collection (excluding Jaws, Django and Glory) and by God those are truly some of the best looking discs of all time. I'd also like to add The Wizard of Oz, Suspiria (1977), My Fair Lady, all of the Indiana Jones movies, Mulholland Drive, Citizen Kane, Phenomena, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Army of Darkness, Casablanca, Cinderella, Thelma & Louise, 夢 (Dreams), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Possession, Schindler's List, The Fugitive, Titanic and The Abyss
Great criteria for the list.
I own three of those movies on 4K, Jaws, The Shining, and Interstellar. I would also recommend newcomers to the format like Joker, The Dark Knight, and Top Gun Maverick on 4K.
Joker was specifically made with Dolby Vision in mind, definitely reference quality. I saw it twice in cinema and the home physical 4K release blows it out of the water imo. I only just recently watched my Top Gun Maverick, holy crap, looks and sounds phenomenal. The original in 4K also deserves a mention, another one that at times looks way more recently made than it is.
@@randallflagg7637 Joker is really great, it’s the most replayed 4K disc movie, because I love the scenes! It’s one of the reasons I bought Joker, I usually don’t buy 4K blu rays unless the movie has replay value and utilizes my big Sony 4K TV!

@@Amazon-34079 dude, 4K is overall better when you have a home theater, some movies look better in 1080p because of the original master was recorded in that digital format, but big IMAX movies by Christopher Nolan who make outstanding 4K visuals are amazing! Please stop with that nonsense!
Totally agree with what you said about Interstellar. I also feel it's Nolan's best with the Dark Knight series right behind it.
I have all these on 4K. Great picks

I only just got on the 4K bandwagon a few months ago and my two were Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Hook, both films I'd only had on DVD and WOW, those 4Ks shine for me.
Great list and 2001 looks amazing in 4k. Interstellar is also my favorite Nolan film. The soundtrack and the visuals-just amazing. And I have to agree with you that the original Blade Runner is well worth the money on 4k. That’s a film that has great re-watch value and the sound and visuals are top-notch.
Great list and shows you really know your stuff.

Another two vintage movies which looks amazing on 4k are The Ten Commandments and Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
I also highly recommend checking Walmart’s clearance as well. I picked up the BR4K Steel Book of Killer Klowns From Outer Space yesterday for $18, and the Godzilla Vs King King (2023) BR4K Steel Book for $14 on clearance. I would also add Full Metal Jacket, and First Blood to the list.

Jeff i dont know about red shoes but the most colorful movie that i have ever seen hands down have to be Speed Racer. Not one of the best movies but its entertaining. I would buy it if it hits on 4k. Best war movie that i like best was the Guns of navarone until 1917. What a great film. Bought me my dream oled tv Sony bravia 65 inch. First movie that i saw on the set was Jaws. I was shock and blown away on how great it look. The second was my fav sci fi movie Prometheus. Wow saw it twice. Today is my birthday and also reach a landmark in my collection 36k on the dot. Keep putting out such great competent. Really enjoy those short videos.

The Martian was my first 4k BD. Still a reference film for the format. Plus a great movie.

Jeff. This is a well thought list. The only down side is now you can extend this to top 25 or top 30.
I own every one of them except Glory, which I will rectify. I can't argue with your picks at all, wonderful. 🍻
I agree with The Shining, it looks great and adds to the feel of the movie. Glory is also a good transfer with a good cast and story.
Great list man!
My number 1 would be the synapse 4k of Suspiria.
Such a good release. One of my favorites - but my only hesitation with including it here was that it’s not a super popular movie/wide appeal for new collectors.
Great choices as always Jeff!! Absolutely agree with you on Christopher Nolan films. They are fantastic on 4K especially Interstellar ! And may i mention Tenet?

Some excellent tips here, which i can vouch for as i have quite a few of them. The other aspect is sound. Of the films in this list, when heard on even a half decent surround system, Blade Runner 2049 can show you what a 4k disc can do, and what streaming does not even come close to
Random but what are you using as your surround speakers right now? I think you had SVS satellites before?
Great video Jeff. A movie I totally recommend that I think you’ll like is The Long Good Friday. Just been released on 4K. British gangster movie from the late 70’s. I did a review on my channel recently for it, I think you’d like that.
I love the 40s and 50s musicals, I really hope they come out with Guys and Dolls in 4k bluray
Yes, Django is great! It was a surprise to see it on this list.
I would Include The Godfather / Godfather II & The Exorcist on this list.
Two of the best movies ever made & great restorations.

I know we're relatively close to one another, so when you said you saw a print of Jaws, it reminded me of a few Summers back. Did you get to see it at Chunky's in Nashua (RIP 😢), when they were passing out the Narragansett cans? Was quite the way to ring in the 4th of July 😂

If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend Tremors 4k release that Arrow Video put out. It looks amazing and the desert/mountain landscape of Perfection is incredible.
I know it's a new one but I'd say Top Gun Maverick is brilliant.
I have Jaws on 4k, Blade Runner, all the newer Batman movies back to the Dark Knight movies, a couple of war movies, but not Apocalypse Now. I guess that's next on the list!
Nice list. But Massively disagree that BR2049 has some of the “best HDR out there”. IMO it’s a perfect example of one of the worst uses of HDR:
-I think it barely goes over 200nits.
-WCG is nonexistent
+ doesn’t stretch into bt2020. -Deakins the DP is also notorious for being against HDR. It’s not far from KnivesOut - which was basically identical to its SDR Blu and mastered in an HDR container. BR2049 had loads of potential for great HDR but really fell short.
The HDTV Test CZcams channel has a video analysing the HDR on blade runner 2049 and the movie basically doesn't have any HDR. You will always read comments on Reddit and CZcams saying the BR 2049 picture is amazing and the HDR is great and the colors pop, this show people don't know what hdr is about.
BR2029 is absolutely fantastic.
Hey, should I go out of my way to to get a Dolby Vision player? I’ve seen comparisons and I honestly think DV makes the picture too dark. But I hear people talk about it like it’s essential. Personally when I see a comparison I’m like meh.
The shining is one of my fav 4ks
You are correct, Jeff; My Fair Lady (1964) is a Technicolor film.
The Red Shoes (1948) is not a musical, though it definitely is a picture that features dancing and is done in a very musical style.
Denzel Washington actually won his first Academy Award for Glory (1989).
" _My Fair Lady_ (1964) is a Technicolor film". Yes, but... that really doesn't mean anything. 'Technicolor' has several different meanings, depending on the timeline. It can refer to (1) an origination process; (2) it can refer to a printing process; and (3), it can simply refer to a film laboratory. And in reference to (1) & (2), there are two types of Technicolor: Technicolor Process No. IV: Three-Strip; and Technicolor Process No. V: Dye transfer prints from chromogenic negative ([most-likely] Eastman Color negative film).
Since virtually no current-day BD's or 4K's are sourced from release prints, what matters in the world of Technicolor is (1) - the origination process - specifically the use of the Technicolor *3-Strip Camera* - and access to the three camera negatives (Red-Green-Blue). _The Red Shoes_ is a perfect example, as the 2009 restoration (from which the 4K release was mastered) utilized the OCN's as the source - for better or worse. So, to Jeff's point, the 'quality' of the color capture is different than what is achieved thru the use of Eastman Color Negative Film. And when HDR-grading is added to the 3-Strip negatives, the image as seen in the digital (4K) domain can really shine.
As far as _My Fair Lady_ is concerned, that film was shot in 65mm, using Eastman Color Negative Film. "Color by Technicolor" in this case, actually has two meanings: It was the laboratory that both processed the negative and [originally] supplied the release prints. The 70mm release prints used Dye Coupler technology, and the 35mm reduction prints [were most-likely] Dye Transfer prints. The color 'quality' of the 35mm vs. the 70mm prints differs as one set used Dye Transfer technology rather than Dye Coupler technology - giving a different meaning to 'Color by Technicolor'. Realistically, the 35mm prints used Technicolor Process No. V, and the 70mm release prints were simply Eastman Color - loosely labeled as "Color by Technicolor", as the film laboratory of record.
As for the 4K release of _My Fair Lady_ - according to Robert Harris, who did the original restoration work: " _Image is derived from 8K scans (down-razzed to 4K) from approximately 150 minutes of original 65mm negative and 21 minutes of 65mm black & white separation masters_ ". But at the end of the day, it's still Eastman Color.
@smsstuart I was just going off if the credits in the film, especially since if it were filmed in Eastmancolor, the credits would have stated as such; though some Eastmancolor films never credited the color process, which always confuses me. Eastmancolor seems to be the only process that did that in films; if a film were shot in Technicolor, Deluxe, Rank Film Laboratories, or Metrocolor, it was often credited. Eastmancolor would sometimes be credited, and sometimes not.
As detailed as your reply is, I would just still rather say that My Fair Lady is a Technicolor film since the credits label it as such. If it said Prints by Technicolor, well then it would be apparent that it wasn't filmed in Technicolor.
@@garrettbays6942 I didn't wish to add any confusion, and would agree with you, if the credit states: "Color by Technicolor" - then Technicolor it is; and as you stated.. _"...that My Fair Lady is a Technicolor film since the credits label it as such."_ I brought this up merely to clarify the process(es); and as you can see, there were many.
You stated: _"if a film were shot in Technicolor, Deluxe, Rank Film Laboratories, or Metrocolor..."_ The only problem with that statement is - the only films *_shot_** in Technicolor* used the Technicolor 3-Strip camera, PERIOD; otherwise a film was 'shot' using Eastman Color, Fujicolor, [God forbid] Ansco Color, etc. film. Technicolor played fast and loose with its name following the retirement of the 3-Strip camera thanks to their continued use of Dye Transfer (IB) Printing and Eastman Kodak's development of the Eastman Monopack 35mm negative stock usable in regular, 35mm cameras. Following the era of the Technicolor 3-Strip Camera, in America, it was almost guaranteed Eastman Color Negative film was utilized for origination, and the laboratories (De Luxe, Metrocolor, Technicolor, [don't forget WarnerColor], DuArt, etc.), processed the negatives, per Eastman's specs., and produced release prints that 'may' have carried a particular *look* indicative of the film laboratory where the work was done.
@smsstuart You mentioned WarnerColor; I found out from Leonard Maltin that WarnerColor was just a trade name for Eastmancolor. For that matter, Ansco, after its color process was modified, would become Metrocolor. MGM used Eastmancolor for a few years after Ansco, and then when Ansco became Metrocolor, that was their primary color process, though they would use Technicolor for their 70mm epics like Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1959), King of Kings (1961), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962).
I noticed that Paramount would use Metrocolor quite a bit in the mid-'70s up until the early '80s.
@@garrettbays6942 WarnerColor = Eastman Color - yes, it certainly was. I really don't know what film lab(s) they used to do their work, but a few of their WarnerColor films had titles reading: WarnerColor - Prints by Technicolor. (I presume those were dye transfer prints).
The story I heard was Warner Bros. missed procuring the rights to the Hypergonar (anamorphic) lens from Henri Chrétien by one day - 2oth Century-Fox being the 'victors'. Jack Warner was pissed and went about coming up with another anamorphic system, using Zeiss-made anamorphic lenses - the system *WarnerSuperScope* - being identical in every way with what Fox [ultimately] settled on by the time _The Robe_ was released in September, 1953. But it was not to be. Following a war of words between Darryl Zanuck at Fox and Jack Warner, the WarnerSuperScope system was abandoned. Warners passed their Zeiss contract to Fox and the only film made with the Zeiss lenses, _The Command_ was Warner Bros. premiere engagement, but was released under the CinemaScope banner.
Undoubtedly, Warner Bros. wanted a complete system they could call their own, but 2oth Century-Fox ended up with the _premiere_ anamorphic system, along with directional, 4-Track Magnetic Sound. Paramount developed VistaVision, and in 1954 MGM would begin work with a 'little' optics company - who was among many optical houses supplying much-needed anamorphic projection lenses to theatres - to develop a 70mm camera system to compete with Cinerama. The system was called _MGM Camera 65 _*_The Window of the World._* It would later be known as *Ultra Panavision 70.*
It's a specialized business, with a lot of proprietary methods, many of which have been lost as those who 'made the magic happen' have died-off.
Hello Jeff, I have Always loved your channel. I seldom say or ask you anything but here it goes... Do you have any news on ARGYLLE blue Ray or 4k ? Can we get our hopes up or we are wasting our time because it was a flop ?! Thank you Jeff.
I think, similarly to Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, Argylle is unlikely to get a physical release because Apple TV+ is the exclusive streaming option to watch them at home as Apple Original Films.
Thanks Jeff. Do you think that next year for the 50th anniversary of Jaws that Universal will release a big time collectors edition of the film.
This is one of my favorites too and I really would like to go all out for it in 2025. 😊
My jaw was drop when i was watching jaw in 4k,very good remaster but sadly only part 1 has atmos
Aliens 4K has got be up there in pristine 4K releases. Unbelievable details!
