    thanks for the vid, i had to choose a bit ago between the fx6 and the c70 - mainly for a 4k/60 gimbal cam. love the c70, if they put eye tracking and a variable ND (highly unlikely for the ND) into some thing like a c90, I'd jump on that in a second. It's a really solid camera overall, but especially for the price as an entry level cinema cam.

    IMO a cinema camera is a camera that can be used in a professional environnement with a professional crew. Therefore, it should provide every professional option a camera operator needs starting with an SDI port... I’ve never seen a producer, a DOP, a director, an AC dealing with hdmi on a professional set…

      I agree with this, a cinema camera is to be used by a camera crew. But as a 600 1st, I’ve used HDMI out of the Venice a handful of times. And I’ve used plenty of smaller DSLR’s on set for crash cams, helmet cams, etc. and they mostly utilize HDMI.

    Currently, I'm running with the Sony FX30. And it's a great camera. At some point, I want to add/upgrade to a higher level cinema camera. But, as an indie/low budget filmmaker, it's important that I am able to shoot run and gun without drawing attention. And part of that means shooting with a camera that doesn't LOOK like a cinema camera. The Sony FX30 covers that. And while it may seem that the FX6 is a natural progression from the FX30, the FX6 looks like a cinema camera. And most likely to draw attention if I'm shooting out and about. But, the C70 has that DSLR form factor, and high specs. Not to mention internal ND filters. So, I am seriously looking at the C70 as my next camera.

      Unfortunately I don't own any Sony camera anymore. It would only seem fair to do a video sample comparison of them in the same situation. Most of the content I shot in the past 9 months or so on my farming channel was on the A7SIII or FX3 if you want to check it out. This video was more about my experience and my decision. Hopefully you got some value out of it. Thanks for watching!

    @retlwiz Před 11 měsíci

    Having used both the C70 and the Fx6 I agree they are both great but I also prefer the C70. The one big thing no-one seems to mention with the Fx6 is the way it boxes you in at certain exposures in SLog3. The restriction to using SLog3 at ISO 800 or 12,800 means you have to use the built-in ND to change your exposure if you want a fixed f-stop. The problem which nobody mentions with the ND is that it starts at 2 stops and personally I find I need ND most often between 0-2 stops, where there is nothing! On the Canon you can tweak the ISO to keep your f-stop the same, but that's a no-go on the Fx6 unless you use S-Cinetone, but then you loose 3 stops off DR! That's pretty brutal, if you ask me. Add to that the massive flexibility with often cheaper, stabilised glass for a s35 sensor on the C70 and it clearly wins over the Sony for me. Unfortunately, in the UK at least, since the Fs7, everyone has a Sony and often Sony cameras are specified on requests for camera jobs, whereas I have never seen Canons asked for. I think Canon screwed up with the pricing of their camera range for these cine cameras, as the C500 is way more expensive than the Fx9 and the C300 much more expensive than the Fx6. However the C70 comes in between the Fx3 and the Fx6 in price and could balance things out.

    Great video! How far can you push the ISO on the C70? I have the a7siii and the 12.8k + ND to adjust comes in handy for some low light or less-than-optimal lit situations. Can you push the ISO pretty good on the C70 with that DGO sensor?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Před 2 lety +1

      I have not yet had a chance to test out high ISO on the C70. With my work I am rarely shooting in low light situations. The Sony A7SIII/FX3/FX6 will probably be better in low light because of their dual native ISO sensors. They are pretty amazing.

    Great video. I own the C70 as well and one of the things that I like about the design of the body style is that it's a great camera for a gimbal. Because the LCD is attached to the body (unlike the FX6) there's no need to have to rig it to the gimbal itself. Just throw it on the gimbal and flip out the screen and you are ready to go. What also makes this a superior camera for gimbal work is the audio inputs are on the body itself (unlike the FX6) so you can attach wireless receivers (I have the Sennheiser AVX) onto the cold shoe and still balance the gimbal perfectly. I do a lot of walk and talk type of shooting with a gimbal and this works out great. Another thing I love about the C70 is all of the assignable buttons (which you won't have on your R5) that is so important to me for run and gun style of shooting. The C70 has 13 assignable buttons and I use every one of them. Like real physical buttons which after a while becomes second nature and you can access anything quickly with your eyes closed if you want. Great camera pretty much across the board for most of my purposes anyway. RAW and 8K just aren't important for the vast majority of the work that I do.

  • @richnationfilms

    Full frame is overrated anyways . If you have fast enough lenses you can get all the bokeh you need with apsc or 35mm sensors . If you light your subjects you’re not concerned about super high iso either .

    • @timeallofgreatestthe
      @timeallofgreatestthe Před rokem

      I have not personally used the Blackmagic cameras, but I think the BMPCC 6K or 6K Pro is probably one of the best bang for your buck cameras in terms of image quality. It works really well when shooting in raw and editing in Davinci Resolve. The one big downside is that the autofocus is not good. If you need autofocus then I would look at a Canon or Sony.

    I'm a long time Canon user and owner. C100 MKI, C200, C300 MKII. I shot a reality series with the 300 MKIII and I love that sensor but I don't want to spend $11k plus media for a new camera right now. As far as the C70, about the monitor hinge? I can probably deal with all of the limitations of the C70 in real life but I have an 80D with the same type flippy screen and I would never even consider using that camera for professional work, even as a C camera, mainly because of the flippy screen and fragile hinge.
    I've seen dozens of posts on all of the camera boards from C70 buyers who have had to have the hinge replaced after only a month or two of shoots. I would be pissed if I spent the money for a C70 and then had to quickly send it back to Canon repair for hinge/monitor issues. I take good care of my gear but I do use it so that monitor would get a good workout as far as flipping it out, then flipping it back into body with the monitor facing out.
    So what say you C70 users. Anyone had monitor/hinge issues yet? I heard Canon was repairing the broken ones with a stronger, better design? Not sure if they have implemented this better hinge design in the latest manufacturing runs of the camera or if this is even true?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Před 2 lety

      It's a different screen than any other camera. It does not have the same confidence that the newer R cameras have for example, but mine is still working fine. There is no perfect camera out there. As far as the image and features I feel that the C70 is tough to beat for the price.

    • @danbrockettDOP
      @danbrockettDOP Před 2 lety +1

      @@Josh_Sattin Completely agree, getting that sensor for that price is a big deal. But I have bought other cameras in the past with factory design defects. Numerous cameras with plastic headphone jack inserts versus metal ones, the plastic headphone jack breaks or gets loose, when the manufacturer could have spent .02 more per unit to fit a proper metal ringed headphone out. Losing your headphone jack on run & gun shoots using wireless is major, not as big of a deal when I am working with sound mixers and they are recording on mixer/recorders but I do some run & gun without a sound mixer.
      The original Panasonic HVX200 had defective plastic battery clips that with a little use broke off, rendering the camera unable to mount a battery, therefore completely useless, left me down a camera on a multi-cam shoot back in the day. I'm super leery of staking high profile work with name brand actors, PR agencies, studios on a camera that may have a built-in failure point. The most distressing thing I've been reading are people using the C70 and NOT abusing it, just using it in normal day to day use, even hobbyists and they begin to see cracks in the hinge mechanism. A failure point like that could have major consequences for my business so I am waiting to see what people are reporting.
      Most of these hinge failures I saw were from the early batches when people were first getting the cameras. Have not seen as many lately. Have you heard from any fellow C70 owners about hinge failure? Is your hinge smooth and low resistance or creaky and uneven when you fold it in and out? People have reported that it was fine, then with use, it progressively became creaky and rough when flipping out the screen, then they spot cracks in the hinge mechanism.
      Thanks for your input and feedback. I hope that Canon has mitigates this issue because other than that, this camera seems to be a pretty appealing package but my instincts tell me to save my money up for the C300 MKIII instead, but I don't really want to spend that amount of money this year. Our C200 and 300 MKII are still going strong so it's not like I have a pressing need to immediately replace them.
      Hearing lots of good things ans seeing some great work from talented DPs with the C70 too so I'm intrigued. I like smaller and lighter, a fully rigged BTS/Doc/EPK C300 MKIII for me will be up at 22-23lbs with big lenses, Teradek, sometimes FIZ, sometimes wireless hop from sound, V-Mounts so shaving off bulk and weight interests me.

    What i don't like about this camera, is it is a RF lens system, but if you use a native lens, you need to x by 1.6. so what most people do is use the booster and use EF lens.
    This to me defeats the purpose as there is no lenses suited in the RF system for this camera. Canon have just released a 16mm which helps (but no IS), but it is a pain if you are wanting to use your RF for stills and video on the C70 and then your stills camera. 🤔

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Před 2 lety

      There is no perfect camera out there. With the basic $100 EF-RF Canon adapter you can treat this like any other S35 Canon cinema camera like the C100s, C200 and C300s. I did a separate video about EF vs RF lenses on the C70 if you want to check it out.

    C70 got everything build in their body, that's one thing many other brand lack of, for example, sony fx3 fx6 need that big fat handle for audio, C70 just got everything you need in such compact size, and that DGO sensor, oh my God, never saw such clean shadow, sony is very famous of its bad noisy image, especially in the dark condition, it's noise level is insanely high compare to c70. Also, Sony camera got worst IBIS compare to almost any camera got IBIS buiild in. Personally I use c70 for works and use fx3 for travel mainly for it's size, there are some advantage from sony, like body size, but judge from image quality and especially color, Canon is on another level.
