Tsukahara - Advanced Vaulting Tutorial

  • In this video I go over how best to build up to and perform the Tsukahara (half on, tuck back) vault.
    Apologies in advance for my very early kickouts! Inner trampolinist showing itself there; there is nothing wrong with a bit of a kickout as long as you still land the skill comfortably, I just wanted to mention briefly that it is far from essential - and certainly for your first few attempts you will need to tuck for much longer than I do here :)

    I'd like to take you up on your offer to explain the issue of the round off and the barani. I am like you in that my preferred round off direction is the opposite of my twisting direction. You say that this is true of most people, however some sources seem to say that they should have the same direction.
    In truth, I neither can do nor particularly need a round off as I am a diver (been diving for 2 years) and only got into gymnastics as supportive training, but this issue of twist direction is still somewhat confusing. If I decided to learn the round off properly should I stick with the opposite direction to my twist or should I try and learn it with the same direction?
    Anyway, while I'm at it, let me thank you for these tutorials. They are really useful and a pleasure to watch. Especially the trampoline ones. Cheers.

      I'm glad you're enjoying what I've been producing so far, I appreciate it. I will try to explain this in a little more detail for you but it can get quite confusing, I hope it makes some sort of sense.
      People really really overcomplicate this issue. In a nutshell; you should roundoff in the direction which feels natural, and you should twist in the way that feels natural. They might be the same, they might be different, for most skills it doesn't really matter. For the vast majority of people; their natural roundoff direction is the opposite to their natural twist direction - and most people who do them the same way do so because it wasn't picked up in the early stages of their learning and once it's become a learned habit it is very difficult to undo.
      Now the confusing part - if you put your left foot forward in a roundoff; it is a right twisting roundoff. It's very difficult to explain without demonstrating, but if you watch side on from the left of somebody doing a left foot forward roundoff, you will see their back as they go over. If you watch a front half twist with a left twist from the same position; you will see their chest as they go over. This demonstrates that a roundoff twists in the opposite direction; even though you step on the same side. Does that make sense?

      ***** Thanks, that's very helpful. I now realize that my round off is actually in the same direction as my twist. It feels like I'm turning right but now that you've explained it I can see that it's actually left, same as my twist.
      I'm very weird with directions anyway. My backward twisting direction was initially different from my forward twisting direction, though I've now corrected this. I think since my round off is still almost non-existent anyway I'll try to learn it the way it's "supposed to be".

    You're turning over the table. It is dangerous. Get a coach to teach you a proper technique!

      Can you explain what you mean by 'turning over the table' cos I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Whatever it is I've never felt like I've been in any danger doing tsuks as I have competed it (and with twists) many times! Thanks for your concern though
