  • This week on the Sentimental Car Club we return to the farm to work on the 1988 All White Edition Cabriolet. With some help from Kirsty's dad, we take a closer look at some of the troublesome relays.

    From memory, you need to insert the fuel cap, rotate it into position, and then turn the lock. With regard to the fuel pump, two thoughts occur. The pump may well be seized through sitting dormant with old fuel congealing, or the power supply is faulty. You could use your Dad's flying lead idea and supply power to the pump directly. This would let you know if it's the pump or the power supply. Very enjoyable video.

    The lock on the fuel cap should have a spring clip on the end to stop it coming out

    On the fuel cap key barrel there should be a mall circlip to retain the the barrel in the cap so the barrel doesnt fall out of the cap lol.

    They alarm will have a fuel pump cut off circuit so find the fuel pump, see if there is power at the pump when the ignition is on and if not put power to the pump to see if it works. Doing this test you don’t have to mess with relays.

    Fuel cap is wrong way round unlock take it out turn it 180 then put it back on great content guys

    You need to secure the lock in the petrol cap with a c clip

    That ignition looks like a mk3 I would if can with parts take pictures of all the parts both ends then listing on ebay for example you can compare the photos I hope that helps the fuel pump will be underneath on the outside of tank it was like that with my rs turbo that was a pink relay underneath dash in where that point is I would add power direct to pump with another battery by adding positive lead to it and negative lead as I bet the terminals for pump is rusty least you will know if your pump is working before commencing with more investigation good luck 👍 keep it up guys it's been 25 years since I worked on my escort cabriolet rs turbo of course I converted it 😉

    On the mk3 xr3i the fuel pump relay was behind the speaker grill in the passenger footwell. If its not clicking, you can remove the outer plastic of the relay and squeeze the solenoid to make the connection. Try to start the car with the solenoid squeezed - this will then let you know if the problem is a result of the FPL or not.

    Buy a power probe and you can use it to put power or earth to any circuit easily and find out if live or earth are at any point. They are worth the cost!

    You should see if you can get a hanyes work shop manual for the escort will make your life alot easier on finding problems is the electric fuel pump works first if not check the connections and give it a tap with the hammer that's if the alarm is not cutting the power to it check to see if you have power to the fuel pump 12v shock you hurt you but you should hear the fuel pump click when you turn the ignition on but it's nice of dad to help

    I would trace the wires from that spark right box to the wireing and see if any main wiring has been chopped about and rewire the main loom look on the box to see if there is a wire diagram on it or check the car over to see for a book as you need to check it just incase might be stopping the car from starting like stoping power to the fuel pump or stopping a spark to the plugs have you checked for a spark 🤔🤔 but check the comments as people will give you good advise to help you 👍

    If the spark rite has cut any of the original car wires they will need re connecting

    Pretty sure you put the fuel cap on upside down
    That’s why it doesn’t fit correctly
    Think you’ll find the alarm has a fuel bypass on it, so would cut power to the pump
    Have you tried spraying easy start or a bit of brake cleaner into the air intake when turning it over ?

    Thst is not an earth point on the relay 😂🤣🤣 its just a mounting bracket !!! The plug has it own ground wire.

    Get rid of that sparkrite alarm they can cause problem especially with emoberliser
