      SWGZone eGPU sounds interesting but they should’ve better compatible GPUs. I have one from Razor and I can use most cards on it, as long as the power supply it’s enough (and makes sense for the TB3 bandwidth). Yes, it’s not portable. But the magic is to use a portable laptop and at the end of the day, plug in a cable and I have my RTX connected to an external monitor pumping the power. I don’t need it to be portable

      Apple buyers, having asked many, say they have no idea what hardware specs they have, or even what they (the specs) mean. They don't really care to know either. They see an Apple logo, and that's all they need to know. Apple isn't a tech company. It's a tech brand. They sell their logo. Does anybody know if a MAC Time Machine backup can be somehow used on a Windows system? Is there any method where the TM can be converted to the other system? Just thinking if I were to buy a PC, would it be possible to restore the MAC TM backup on a Windows system? Thanks.

    • @Spladoinkal
      @Spladoinkal Před 3 měsíci +1

      As far as I'm aware, no. Time Machine backs up what's known as an "Image" which basically is a complete snapshot of your system, INCLUDING Mac OS X. It's impossible to separate the Mac OS X from the rest of the software. Because PC's cannot use Mac OS X, the PC would be unable to use the Time Machine Image. Your best bet would be to back up individual files you use such as documents, etc. Then you can install the programs you need on the Windows system and import those individual documents you backed up. Yes, this is more work, but it's typically a one-time thing unless you have problems in the future that require you in reinstall Windows.

Now, everything is gone, so it appears, but I have a hunch that the files could be recovered. Would you have any advice on how to do this? The new iMac does not recognize the drive as a Time Machine backup drive, but I am wondering how to recover and restore the previous backup files to their original state, so the drive can again be recognized and used. @sashineb.2114 you're welcome! Hmm for that it's hit and miss. Here's the thing: When you erase data, it's not fully gone until the space that the data sat on is overwritten with more data. I can't guarantee you can get the data back but it MAY be there. You'll need to take it to a data recovery specialist to do that though. In the mean time, the less you use the drive the better the chance.

    Hey man ,I love the comparisons you do for all the laptops you review, but could you try and add comparisons for other aspects too ? A lot of the comparisons are heavily based on videography, photography, 3d rendering and similar workflows. I think it would be really helpful to a lot of people if you could compare more Engineering related applications on Mac and PC. For Eg Solidworks, Physics Simulations using softwares like Ansys, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Training AI Models, Speed tests for linux based softwares, MATLAB simulations, and so on. I understand that these tests are much harder to design but till now I've not seen anyone comparing these aspects for Mac, PC and performance gains in each new generation of products.

      Binned is when a chipset has lower cores than the designed amount. The 3nm process has low yields meaning that many chipsets have cores that do not pass the testing process. So, Apple turns these off, and sells the chipset as binned. This is sensible for e-waste reasons and obviously reduces the costs.

Then Apple uses compression; I have seen 3.5GB of compressed RAM on my Mac. Check out the app's RAM usage on Mac -vs. Windows: it is lower in many cases, which helps free up RAM. To ensure an equitable playing field, the battleground was set on desktop systems of identical power, creating an environment conducive to a comprehensive and unbiased assessment of their respective capabilities. The goal was clear: to delve into the intricacies of their performance across a diverse array of tasks, spanning routine computing endeavors to more demanding and resource-intensive workflows. As the contest unfolded, a discernible pattern emerged, ultimately culminating in openSUSE Tumbleweed claiming victory. Notably, the open-source operating system demonstrated a nuanced edge, operating with a perceptible speed and efficiency advantage over its macOS counterpart. I selected the AMD version as it is more power power efficient and has powerful integrated graphics in addition to the RTX. Overall the AMD 7840HS IMHO is comparable to the M1 PRO which I also own. Unless you need to run some heavy games, you do not need to lug around the heavy 230W AC adapter, I run fine on a light 65W USB-C power adapter. Also note that the LEGION comes with 8GB dedicated video memory in addition to system memory, thus 32GB is 32GB+8GB. Unified memory is in my opinion a hype when it comes to efficient sharing between system and graphics.
    Also you should add RAM in the second slot of the LEGION, it costs virtually nothing (I paid $1 (!) through an eCoupon) and will double your memory bandwidth. Should help on those export times.

      @doseofreality100 Před 4 měsíci

      A fully spec'd out Mac would cost like $4500 to a similarly spec'd out windows pc to the Mac being like.... $2500. Like he Mentioned... the second you start upgrading a Mac they gouge the hell out of the customer.
      And I'm a Mac user. That said.... I'm in the market to update/ upgrade from my decade+ old iMac. The reason there's a question on which to go with..... about 20 years ago I was a pc user exclusively. I had NOTHING but issues. The security on pcs was atrocious, IMO, back then. I got a MacBook... had it for about 5 years before the track pad wore out. It still worked... so long as you had a mouse. I got an iMac desktop. In the entire time I've used a Mac I've had ZERO issues with it. My problem now is due to my iMac being nearly 15 years old I can no longer update to the current ios.... and haven't been able to for years. But now.... I can't update Google Chrome. So I'm stuck with safari. Which isn't terrible. But I'm using this as an excuse to upgrade/ update my setup. The iMac actually works just fine.... despite being like 13 years old. It's just.... outdated. I haven't update the ios in like 5 years, again, because it says I can't. I'm sure there's a workaround.... or I just have to BUY the new ios. And I'm not doing that.
      And there lies the problem. Mac is definitely no longer the cutting edge of innovation. Their products are about as dull looking as it gets. None of their computers to my knowledge have even the most basic features like a touch screen. They'll never make a 2- in-1 laptop because it'll eat into their iPad market. Old apple would say fuck it... and just keep adding modern features to the MacBook to make it more in line with competition at least as far as features go. I mean they made the iPhone which literally shut down their iPod market. They didn't care. They'll never kill or even just put a dent in their iPad market though. Because... $$$. As such.... Mac computers are easily the least innovative out there. I mean my iMac is 13-14 years old. Up until the RECENT redesign of iMacs.... my 13-14 year old iMac desktop looked pretty much identical to an iMac from 2020 or 2021. Imacs used to change their design CONSTANTLY in the 90s. They were... fun.... and awesome computers. Now.... they look like the most boring guy in the room.
      That said...... with a Mac you know... or at least I know - I'm getting insane reliability. In about 20 years of using a MacBook or iMac I've had ZERO issues with any Apple offering. It's hard to put a price tag on that peace of mind. So the dilemma is..... do I buy the better spec'd waaaaay cooler and innovative and feature packed windows pc laptop...... or just buy the "safe".... yet boring as fuck macbook.... for at best a similar price of not MORE than said windows laptop.
      That said... as time goes by I find myself just using my phone for emails. I have a work laptop (windows) the company I work for provides me. I'd pretty much only be using a personal pc/ laptop for... surfing the internet.... streaming content.... and the occasional office software functions. Unlike what most CZcams reviewers if tech think I feel like I'm in the... I don't know... 80% of the population who isn't in some video/picture editing job industry or a CZcamsr. So the typical gripes CZcams reviews have regarding video and photo editing capabilities I feel like apply to few users. At the very least FAR fewer than they realize. With how much phones can do nowadays and the ability to just put it in your pocket....... I almost question if I even really NEED a PC anymore to be honest. I feel like I can't be alone on that. I mean if you don't game or do any video/photo editing for your job.... or any architecture work..... does one really even "need" a laptop anymore? I feel like desktops in their traditional format are a dying breed for this very reason.... if not already dead. I mean most people "need" a monitor and a "desktop setup"...... to just plug their laptop to it and use it as a desktop. So there's really little need for an actual desktop computer anymore outside of commercial office use.
      Because of all this...... I feel like I'll probably wind up going with just the BASE 15" MacBook air. I think I can snag one for $1000. Buuuuuut.... even at that fairly reasonable price.... there's so many intriguing windows laptops out there.... for CHEAPER. It all comes down to that peace of mind I was talking about and what price tag do you put on that? Is the peace of mind really worth the $200-300 premium I'd still be paying for a BASE level MacBook air? As time goes on..... I question that... and actually lean towards - no. It's not worth that premium markup. I say that now but if I go windows and in like 3 years I'm cussing up a storm trying to fix my laptop..... my tune will change. So.... I don't know, haha.

      I think by leaving it plugging he doesn't mean letting it sit in one place plugged in. For example, I use my laptop at home mostly plugged in, when in class I will use it plugged in whenever possible if the class is over 4 hrs and if it's just a short ~2-4 hrs class that day I will just not bring the charger and use it just from the battery. So I still use it basically plugged in most of the time, but the portability of the laptop is still important.
      As for battery life, mine could certainly go 7-8 hours for video playback, but since I find that I can use it plugged in most of the time, I limit the battery to 60% to maximize battery health and always use it plugged in whenever possible.

      Which worked in Windows laptops until the Apple Silicon chips came out for Mac. The problem is those giant "Engines" in Windows laptops produce so much heat that they have to slow themselves down to prevent problems. This is why some i7 laptops will end up beating out i9 laptops of the same generation during an extended workload. Apple solved this by making Apple Silicon, which is for all intents and purposes a mobile processor on steroids. Since Apple Silicon cpu's run at a much lower power level, they also produce much less heat and therefore don't have to throttle themselves. Since these "Mobile" cpu's are also extremely powerful on top of running cool, they in many cases beat out i9's over extended usage. I'm eagerly waiting for the release of the snapdragon ARM processors to compete with this on the Windows side.

    mac for me.
    it's just weird for me how the windows laptops become an OLD 2010s PENTINUM PC when unplugged.
    laptop is designed for people who want a machine that is portable while handling everyday task easily. based on that, i would rather choose a mac. if y'all want to plug the windows laptop in, that's okay, but i would love to use a pc instead :)

    It's a common myth that windows laptops are slower in battery mode. This solely depends on the settings. You can get 100% of performance in battery mode. Yet most Laptops come with defaults settings using less power in battery mode. It was always one of the first settings I change, when setting up a new laptop. In general you should check your usability and adjust the settings which fit your use case.

      @@GustavoNoronha You have to look at it more in detail. There are 3 different scenarios:
      1. You just set your battery setting to best performance.
      2. You need to go to windows energy settings and set the CPU Performance to 100% when in battery mode.
      3. You need to go to the BIOS and adjust the settings there and/or do a BIOS update (happens often with HP Laptops).
      At least the third option won't be suitable for a beginner or casual user. But these people usually don't need 100% performance anyway.

    • @GustavoNoronha
      @GustavoNoronha Před 7 měsíci

      @@petroskraitsis I know all that, and I also know how to set and configure the power governors under Linux, some chips and laptops just won't do it regardless of configuration, they are hardwired to do that - even if you set everything to extreme.

    Hey, this comparison is not at all fair to windows... you should have used a 7845hx cpu for this test, which would have had much better efficiency.
    Even if you only know about intel, use a 13620H or 13700H at max... i9 base varient processors (not the 13980HX) are worse than i7 in most cases...

    As someone who used Windows laptops for like 70-80% of my life, once I switched to Mac I can’t go back, the battery life is too good, memory management is way better, the overall OS is much quicker and snappier, no constant security updates every 5 minutes, no bloatware, works great with my other Apple devices, just a much more enjoyable experience

    Saying Resolve is better is exceptionally subjective without additional context. Most editors find Resolve faster at WHAT? Exports is what you meant to say but 98% of an editor’s time is spent on the actual editing; and Final Cut has the magnetic timeline which is objectively faster for many workflows

    • @thejeffyb9766

      Pretty much everything was faster on Windows for me, from export to timeline performance, on my Windows 11 desktop compared to the M2 Max I had (and send back). It's a 5950x with a 2080Ti and 64gb of RAM, so somewhat old hardware. I sort of drank the kool-aid on how "superior" Apple Silicon was, and discovered it's really only better on battery. Add denoise or similar filters and the apple silicon REALLY slows down.
