    Woooooow second mother is an utter disaster
    You don't get positive results with negative reinforcement.
    Punishing him and sucking the life out of him will only make him resent them.
    Thats not how you motivate someone. You motivate people with rewards
    And I know what you're thinking 'you shouldnt reward someone for something they're supposed to do anyways'
    And that's fair. But it's proven rewards work. The kids being given pocket money for chores are far more motivated to do it well than those doing it begrudgingly because ordered to.

    Story 1 - Honestly. First question people willfully ignore when an older man or woman targets someone half their age is why can't they get someone to date them that's their own age? The answer is really simple. They're just predators that want someone naive to control. A fresh 18 year old might be an adult according to the law but they don't know anything. I feel so sad for that younger guy. Everyone in his life absolutely failed him and he's going to carry the trauma from this toxic relationship for the rest of his life all because his family was greedy.
    Story 2 - NTA but op needs to change tactical approach. This kind of thing would only force someone to dig in deeper into a potentially toxic relationship. In the future when op's son gets older op should expect to be put on a low contact status.
    Story 3 - I already heard this one anf still believe op made the right decision. The female coworker is an aspiring homewrecker and now she can deal with op's ex husband's multiple emotional and psychological problems now. I hope op can find someone that will value her loving dedication and loyalty but she'll never get back those years she spent married to that ingrate.

Parents grounded him (for the first time per the story) until he got his grades back up. S2: No one who thinks OP is the AH should have kids. Ever. The kid was doing stellar until he had a girlfriend, and now he’s missing assignments, turning in essays literally WEEKS late, and overall just dropping the ball. Parents are going to let him see his GF as much as he wants after he gets all B’s and C’s. Meaning the kid was bringing home D’s and F’s. The kid messed up greatly and now drastic measures need to be taken ASAP. There’s no “time management” that needs to be learned right now. He needs to get everything back where it is supposed to be, and THEN they can teach him work/life balance. Reddit is full of entitled brats who think parents should always bend to their children’s whims otherwise CPS ought to be called.

    • @LymiaKanokawa
      @LymiaKanokawa Před 20 dny +8

      The commenters aren't telling the OP to let his kid do whatever he'd like. They're telling them to be more involved in their life, as something other than a simple source of threats and punishments. The parents rejected the *correct* advice that was given in the comments: Get more involved and see what he actually needs. Find out what's going on *first* before taking drastic measures. He claimed his teachers were being unfair; if you prove him wrong, then you have far more justification for grounding that he could understand, such as the fact that he's lying to get out of it.
      Unfortunately, it sounds like the commentators are right. They were uninvolved parents before, and his success in school was his own personal accomplishment - with his parents contributions simply being paying for stuff. They are uninvolved parents now, simply threatening to take away *things* at a distance as their only real response.
      Don't let your anger at "entitled brats" blind you to what's actually going on here. If they rejected this advice, I highly doubt there will be an "then". They'll just keep providing punishments if he slips, but not provide him actual help; just threats.

    • @ryanmackenzie6109
      @ryanmackenzie6109 Před 20 dny +3

      Please genuinely honest to god do not put yourself in a position of authority over a child. Ever. You will mess them up. Do not have kids. Do not adopt. Do not become a teacher or mentor.
      You wanna see bad grades? Deprive a kid of their social life. Watch how fast their entire wellbeing tanks. I can PROMISE you that kid is going to be significantly worse off than if the parents had legitimately just let the kid fail a year.
      I'm not going to sit here and say you should let kids fail their clases. However, like that one comment said, those parents taught that kid NOTHING. "Were gonne work you to th bone and then work you even harder and ALSO if you cant make this up, punish you for that too" is not a sufficient life lesson. Thats only breeding resentment.
      You know what hes going to learn from this? "I can't be trusted to have a relationship with anyone because I dont understand how to manage my time effectively, so I'll avoid dating for years."
      And that is _not_ the kind of message you want to be sending your child. Maybe, just maybe, teaching him those genuine time management skills would help him avoid this situation in the future, because as it stands, this is a cycle that's either going to repeat itself again and again or crash and burn horribly.
      A more reasonable course of action would have been to ground him for a few weeks, maybe a month. Enough time to get back on track. Let him have his weekends to spend how he wants only if and when his other scholwork is done. And teach him how to manage his time while doing so. Slowly reintroduce activities and priviledges and help him problem solve better ways to plan things so hes not dropping his grades again. But these parents decided to make their child figure that out himself, instead of being parents.
