    You came like a miracle to me. I was challenged to teach little kids and I was kinda panicking. I have no idea of how to interact with small children and tomorrow I'll have my first class with them and I had no idea of what to do. Most of the videos, here on CZcams, are with kids in a "advanced" level of knowledge. Your tips were everything that I needed. So, Thank you a lot.

      Hi Arthur! Your comment made me so happy! I really hope this vid helped! How did your class go? How many kids did you have in your group? First lessons are always scary - especially when you don't know your students. If I'm not sure what to do I usually just try to have fun and this creates the mood for the lesson and all the kids end up having fun - even if we're doing just simple tasks. 😬Let me know how it went! 🙌

      Hello, can you tell me what age your learners are ? Whether they know the English Alphabet or not? And how do you start teachinh them? Orally first? Or teaching writing along?

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 5 lety +8

      Hi! I've taught all ages! From 3 year olds and up. It's hard to answer your question because it depends on the learning. If it is a 3 year old child I start orally first. Songs, games, talking and showing - so being very expressive in what you're doing, kind of like a mime so that they can guess what you're saying by your actions. I usually start with introductions. Hello, my name is... ect. And repeating with the child, adding other toy animals to join our group - so you introduce yourself to a teddy, and you reply as the teddy, gives the child and example to copy. But usually I do most of the talking. Writing you can use if the child is older and already knows how to write. But pictures and drawing to communicate always works best. With adults, sometimes I join oral + writing so that they can see the word while I say it and once it's written down they can practice it later. Maybe you could give me a specific example? That would make it easier for me to explain. Also check out my video How to use drawing to teach. czcams.com/video/hGd9d_vLXtA/video.html
      Maybe it will answer some of your questions. :)

    Puppets usually work pretty well for me (especially for kids who are too young to focus on drawing etc). I love to get kids to feed a puppet with a mouth that opens. It can be as simple as touching a food flashcard on the wall, and then giving it to the puppet. Thanks for the nice ideas.

      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 6 lety +31

      Hi Vee! I believe that the most important thing is to be yourself and to teach in a way that YOU'RE comfortable with. If you look at different activities online, do the activities that you know you'll feel comfortable doing or adjust them to suit you. If you're enjoying your lesson your children will too! You can try to spend more time one on one with kids to get to know them better but also so that they can get to know you better.

  • @hbanana7
    @hbanana7 Před 5 lety +3

    My objective when teaching kids:
    Make it FUN! English will eventually become a stuffy, but my goal is to get the kids to get excited and about English! Associate it as a positive
    Drawing skills comes in super handy! This is true especially for me. I'm sure dancing is also a great teaching skill.
    Always research games and tools and tips. This is a mental battle between you and the kids. They will quickly let you know when they're bored.
    I'm struggling with discipline. One of my student is very high strung and quick to tears if she is not winning. I can't just keep changing my lesson plans to fit her whims.

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 5 lety +1

      Is this high strung student of yours an individual student or do you teach her in a group? If it's a group lesson and everyone else is having fun but her, I understand it can be difficult to adjust the lesson to her needs, but maybe you could give her another option to do? Or if the group is bust put her into a "team" so she won't be an individual player?

    • @hbanana7
      @hbanana7 Před 5 lety +1

      Teaching English with Suzi
      I teach her in a group of two girls. I had to (reluctantly) tell them not to squabble if they didn’t want to pay a quarter. I wish I had a better method.
      But today was a very good class. I love my students.

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 5 lety +1

      @@hbanana7 I'm glad to hear that today went well. That must be a very satisfying feeling. And I know how difficult some lessons can be. I had one very competitive student who if she saw she was losing she would just lose interest and wouldn't want to play anymore. I had to think of games that didn't have a winner. Story games worked great for her - we created stories together and put them into a book, she also loved teaching (and said she wants to be a teacher on day) so I got her to teach me things I didn't know, the only rule was she had to try explain it to me in English. ;)

      Far from speaking anything like fluent English but she passed the exam. Very bright girl and knew more than she was letting on. She had been listening to me for the past year and taking it all in. I'm really proud of her. If it is of any use - She could already count to one hundred which is brilliant because we live by numbers - time date years etc etc. I taught her ‘yesterday’ ‘today’ & ‘tomorrow’. Which immediately gave her a vocabulary of one hundred and three words. I stuck to common everyday words; learning words such as Christmas was completely pointless, she is Buddhist and they don’t officially celebrate it. Taking your advice we sat cross-legged on a bed to learn. I take an interest in her interests, trying not to be too invasive (being close to becoming a teenager they need some space) which somehow caused her to have a desire to teach me. That’s good because my Thai is minimal and being language related fitted in very nicely.

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 5 lety +2

      Oh wow! It looks like you did a good job! I love the fact that you decided to go for the "sitting on the same level" and taking an interest in her interests. I bet that already gave your relationship an extra boost! The fact that she wants to teach you is perfect and you could use this to your advantage! I taught a very difficult group of 12/13 year olds and every lesson plan I prepared went out the window. I finally gave up because I spent the entire lesson trying to convince them to do what I had planned and failed anyway so we stopped doing my lessons, and I stated becoming curious in what they were doing and got them to try and explain it to me in English. The boys taught me how to do bottle flips and we recorded their "flips" on my phone so we could rewatch it together later, the girls were really interested in this app that lets you record your dance moves and helps you lip sync by slowing down the song and they explained how that works and we tried to record some songs together using the app and it changed my relationship with the kids around! I was letting them teach me, but in doing so, I was teaching them English without them even knowing it! :D

      @@mbrunnen04 Ayyyy firstly congrats! secondly, they would still see you as an adult or a 'big human' and they were soo nice and cute and funny! you just gotta play some English songs and lullabies and umm... Idk be patient? and do A LOT of activities to make them more positive about the subject.
      If you see a shy (or a little naughty) kiddo be extra patient with them and focus a little bit more on them when it comes to the activities to make them get used to it.
      That's all what I can tell you I guess the rest is up to you and good luck

      I guess from my experience
      Teaching kids
      Is just by let them watch cartoons for long time and speak with them in English even if they are don't know what you say
      And after long time like two years or one
      Start teaching them how to read and write

      @@danielcolorado1189 Aaw! Cute man! Well, I'd start with an introduction ;)
      I'd start by saying hi, saying my name and asking them whats their name. You could bring in a toy (if you're comfortable with that) and treat your toy as a student - so you'll be creating an extra example so that the kids will know what you expect from them. You introduce yourself, and then your toy introduces itself. Depending on how much time you have with them I'd plan out a couple of activities and try to keep my first couple of lessons in the same order. Starting with hello, what's your name - it could be in a circle - passing around a ball, and then planning out some simple activities ie actions - something along the lines of Simon Says. So stand up, sit down. You could bring something "interesting" with you. Something from home, a box of interesting things that you can name, and on each lesson there could be something new in the box.
      Example:
      Introduction, Hello (names in a circle)
      Actions (stand up, sit down)
      Secret box with something inside
      Some game? / Drawing activity?
      Goodbye
      Each lesson would then have the same structure but you add on something new. One week it's "hello my name is" and then the next week it could be that + "how are you? I'm good!" etc...
      If you're comfortable with singing you could find some songs that you could add on to saying hello in the beginning and goodbye at the end.
      Does this help in any way?

    I have had so many people ask me to teach English to their children. My own have been learning from birth, so it is difficult for me to imagine speaking English to a child who only knows English in terms of TV shows or songs like Baby Shark. Many parents have said "oh they can understand English they watch Peppa pig and laugh." But I know if I watch with my daughter shows in English when I ask her what she understood she may just guess from what she sees. Not necessarily from the words alone.

    Can I ask how to start? For the age of 4 and 5 . Is the best to teach then objects and colours? And is it a good thing to give them a cookie or something like a treat after doing a good job?

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 3 lety +1

      I would start with introductions.
      Things like:
      How are you?
      I'm good! How are you?
      What's your name?
      My name is...
      His name is...
      Her name is....
      (Here you're adding in girl, boy, his, her,)
      I add these in as games and as songs - if you don't mind singing. (Check out Super Simple Songs) If you're teaching a group, children can practice with each other or you can ask them to introduce their friends. If you're teaching one-on-one you can create characters and practice/play with them. Have a look at my video where I create characters and then add different objects to the character - his food, his car, his bed, and so on --> czcams.com/video/zlFRjhPFe0E/video.html&lc=UgxYynuwImtJoJgw5ut4AaABAg&ab_channel=TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      This will be great with 4 and 5 years olds!
      As to treats, I personally don't think this is a good idea as children that young then focus on the treats more than on interacting with you and learning. If the lesson is fun that will be a big treat in itself. Instead of treats you can bring interesting things to your lessons to tell children about, or buy some little crafts that kids can use in their creative projects during your lessons. Eg, some stickers, or googly eyes for adding to the creatures that they create. The fact that they can make something on your lesson and then take it home is a great treat in itself. :)

    Hello, thank you so much for the video! I am targetting 5-6 y.o kids, and I am so puzzled on how to start teaching them? Orally first? Or teaching writing along? They don't know the alphabet (neither reading nor writing)

    • @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi
      @TeachingEnglishwithSuzi  Před 5 lety +2

      I'd go for orally first! :) Even as babies we first start to learn a language by listening, and then later we start trying out words. So talking to them, showing them pictures, mimicking actions and singing songs with actions is a great way to start. You could implement the alphabet a little later, for eg, basing a lesson on a letter. Like, a whole lesson with things that contain the letter "A". Something similar to what they do on Sesame Street?

      Hi! My favourite is DRAWING with kids! You can check out this video: czcams.com/video/zlFRjhPFe0E/video.html - Here I do it with my 20month old daughter but you could adjust the game to do whatever your son is interested in. Here I draw a [man], but both of you could draw a monster or dinosaur together and name different parts while you're drawing, then you can draw their food, or where they live etc. and name it in English - then do the "envelope game" at the end to do a quick revision.
      Aaand, you could also adjust this game to fit whatever you want: czcams.com/video/lFmWwOSwHXU/video.html
      Have fun and good luck!

      I'm still working on that myself. But I love using shared whiteboards like miro.com for example. Then we can draw different objects and add sticky notes to them and it feels like we're almost in the same room. Sometimes we also play games like Pictionary where one person thinks of a word we recently learned on our lessons, or even a sentence and the other person has to guess what it is.

      "Don't have to" or "can't"? If the headteacher said "don't have to" it sounds like it's your choice and you could always share your motive. :) If it works for you and your students and the headteacher is reasonable I'm sure they'd understand.
