Teaching Adults English: Your First Lesson
In response to your most frequently asked questions, I've made a video sharing what I do with my students on my first lesson to help you feel more confident about teaching your new student! 💪
In this video, I touch on two main topics:
🔹 What do I do with my student on the first lesson - 1:32
🔹 What if my student isn't chatty - 4:00
Stress can be a huge hindrance so I find that insuring my students' comfort is an important part of my lesson.
Check out my video "How to make your student comfortable" here:

    Don't really understand how you would spend time to get to know your student if they are A1/A2, or do you only teach intermediates and above?

    • @ss0ju
      @ss0ju Před 15 dny

      What I do for my A1/A2 students is give them a sheet of relevant vocab and then ask questions. For example, for the first lesson I'd give them a sheet of simple adjectives and ask them to describe themselves, their partners/friends/family etc. This helps lower stress because they have their answers in front of them but it still allows for creative answers. I do the same thing for other topics, until they feel confident enough to develop their own answers without help.

    I live in México and accidentally volunteered to teach English to a friend and her (rapidly growing) circle of friends. They are at... is there a negative level? They're at English (101 - 2). I've never taught English in my life, and with the first class starting next week, I'm looking for a very basic step-by-step guide. You know: Step 1: Open door. Step 2: Walk in. Step 3: Say hello--in English.... I don't know how I get myself into these things, but I look forward to watching the rest of your videos--you're an absolute delight!

      "Don't have to" or "can't"? If the headteacher said "don't have to" it sounds like it's your choice and you could always share your motive. :) If it works for you and your students and the headteacher is reasonable I'm sure they'd understand.

    I have a student who is very shy. And in the beginning it was really hard to talk to her. She was scared to open her mouth and say something in English. But the minute I found out that she is crazy about Harry Potter movies we had a breakthrough. Suddenly she started telling me all about her favourite part of Harry Potter. And she was so happy) It was important to her to share her passion with me and all of a sudden she stopped being petrified of speaking another language 😊

    Hi Suzi, I just came across this video and found it VERY helpful. I am looking into teaching abroad and appreciate the insight this video offers. I will be watching your other videos as well. One thing I found interesting and wanted additional information about, was how you decided to start your own business and how long that process took for you to take off and become profitable, what resources you used, etc. I am considering getting my tefl, then celta and possibly delta. I'm not sure that will all be necessary, but it did intrigue me on the idea of starting my own company helping others learn English. I understand you have taken time off to tend to personal matters with family (late congratulations!), but hope you may come across the alert of this comment. Either way, this was a great video and inspired me to follow your channel. Looking forward to watching your other videos and learn more! Thank you.
