the SPOONFUL were huge in the 60's and for good reason. front man john sebastian was a genius songwriter and his smash hit for the theme song for the show 'welcome back kotter' in the 70's is so iconic and recognizable by almost everyone. the SPOONFUL'S greatest hits is something i still listen to often as it was the music i grew up with back then.
From their "Daydream" album from 1966 this is such a sweet romantic tune. It's beautiful lyrics, only to be topped by the beautiful instruments, has masterfully blended harmonies. They used harmonica, chimes, slide and penny whistles to soften this tune. It made it to Number 10 on the hit 100's. Brian Wilson said this song inspired "God Only Knows". Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Daniel. 👏 👏 Beautiful Memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Good info - on one of my fave songs. I just love part of this song - the lyrics, the harmonies...and the composition. Makes me feel very happy inside. I've been humming this for a few days now..
My take was that he was just saying even if she wasn't so nice to him she would have won his heart. I had this song on my setlist for many years when I used to play out. I was a solo act so I didn't have the great harmonies, but it was one of those songs that were so good that people still enjoyed it, even though it wasn't really comparable to the original arrangement.
The Best of Lovin' Spoonful and some solo John Sebastian songs. Must always be nearby for my car. Autoharp. John Sebastian doesn't complain. To me all his songs were love songs from the nicest guy who were glad is so nic! ❤️
You are also hearing John Sebastian playing a hand held autoharp adding to the depth of the ‘guitar’ sounds. They were very popular as the music of the late 60’s began to evolve.
Hey Daniel Volk, you didn't have to be so cool. 😀Very cool song man. I didn't know who done this or the title but I have heard this all of my life. Wow!! 👍✌👋
Hey Harri! Have you heard Lovin' Spoonful's Darling Be Home Soon? John Sebastian wrote it and the band did it. Joe Cocker also covered it and it maaaybe better than the original?
Thanks so much Daniel!! I love this song and it’s so refreshing to hear it after all these years. There was just something very comforting about the LS’s sound and it still rings true today. Great insights from Harri. 🌺✌️
This song was featured in Kevin Costner's movie "The Postman" which is worth a watch. It also features Tom Petty. This has always been one of my favorites.
You have to remember, when this song was made most records were released in mono and if it was stereo, they had four tracks. Go back and listen to the early Beatles and Stones records.. big separation between the channels.. voice and maybe guitars on one side bass and BG vocals on the other… listen to the old vinyl before they were remastered.
Another great band from the 60's. You've done quite a few of their hits. They had so many cool songs such as "Jug Band Music", "Rain On The Roof", "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?", "Do You Believe In Magic?". John Sebastian was their lead singer & went solo in the 70's.
A fun pop tune from one of the influential '60s groups; the Lovin' Spoonful had a number of big hits in the U.S. (not sure how well they did in the U.K.) Another great '60s hit to check out is "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)" by John Fred & His Playboy Band. Unlike the Lovin' Spoonful, John Fred's band was a one-hit wonder, but that was a cool boogie/psyche tune, reaching #1 in the U.S. for a week in 1968.
This was recorded in two mono tracks with multiplexing discrete stereo because in those times true stereo didn’t exsist. They were experimenting with what later would be discrete stereo
Probably started in 65, very short lived band tho about 4 or 5 very good songs. John Sebastian a very good singer made a nice presence successful! I dug their music.
I'm pretty sure the backup vocals are overdubs. They sound like Sebastian to me. "You didn't have to be so nice" is praise in coy language. It means, you're even better than I'd hoped.
Pulling vocals to one side of the headphones reminds me of the atrocious "stereo" mix Capitol Records used for the original US releases for the Beatles-all vocals on one side and all instruments on the other-they did that until SGT Pepper came along.
Hi Harri 🙋♂... I know I'm late to the party, but no, he's not complaining. He actually sates it clearly, but the pause between lyrics might be throwing you off. He say, "You didn't have to be so nice, I would've liked you anyway"". What he means is, he appreciates her effort, but it was gonna happen regardless, so you don't have to try so hard ... kind of like the modern expression, "You had me at Hello". It's not a complaint ... acceptance. He goes on to say: You came upon a quiet day You simply seemed to take your place I knew that it would be that way The minute that I saw your face Yeah, he was already smitten with the kitten ... it's what he's admittin'😺😊🤣👍 !!!
You missed by 20 years, but because of the notice of the "jangly guitars, I'll forgive you! (Fab lead guitar by ZALLY YANOVSKY originally from Canada.)
Hello Harri, this is one of those rare instances where the remixed stereo version of this classic Spoonful tune doesn't do it justice via headphones for the reasons you mentioned. When you have a spare two minutes and 31 seconds, give the 45 RPM mono version a try (released November 13, 1965 on the Kama Sutra label), the vocals are "brought forward" and better balanced on that original radio broadcast version, here is the link (and thanks to Daniel for this reaction request): czcams.com/video/Gupxx1mW7NU/video.html .
It’ got nothing to do with the 80’s ya kid. It was the 60’s when innocents was still a part of all of our hearts. A time when you were trusted with your words from the start. I guess you had to have been there, peace!
Nope, I remember buying this tune as a 45, but it sounded so much better, also on the radio vocals were forward as they should be, so I'm not sure what's going on here. Cheers
I can't understand why you have never reacted to Robbie Williams. Robbie Williams has now overtaken Elvis Presley to become the solo artist with the most number one albums in UK chart history. Robbie now has 14 number one albums beating the previous record of 13 held by Elvis. Robbie Williams sits only behind the Beatles who have managed 15. He also holds the record for the biggest event in UK concert history when he played solo to over 375,000 at Knebworth in 2003. His concert was far bigger than the Live Aid concert of 1985. Yet, he is virtually ignored on reaction videos. I just don't understand. Why not give him a try? A good place to start would be Robbie singing 'Angels' live from that Knebworth concert, or indeed any song from that great event. Robbie is a great live entertainer.
Another great Lovin Spoonful song about deciding between girlfriends…Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind. czcams.com/video/1cEFh9zurug/video.html. You ought to react to it.
Man what you on about its the sixties 😂😂😂 No home phones hardly and no mobile phones any and If you saw a girl you liked you had to act quick and follow her 😂😂😂 different generation
Lovin" Spoonful was gigantic hitmaker in mid-60s.They'll live in our hearts forever and will never be forgotten.
“You didn’t have to be so nice, I would have looked you any way”... sounds like a conversation he’d after they got together!!.
Summer in the City is a great song by the Lovin Spoonful
Kim, I requested Harri to do Summer in the City. He did it last year for me. Thanks. 🙃👍
I REALLY LIKE this guy. He really seems to enjoy the music, and he says why. But he doesn't go overboard in his praise. Cool!

This was a staple of the 1960s "Classic Rock" era playlist. What a great song, from a great era of music.

Their music always put a smile on your face and a dance in your step. Kind of reminds you of the Beach Boys with happiness.
I’ve always loved this song.
For beautiful harmonies take a listen to the Association's. ALONG COMES MARY----Never My Love--Cherish
This song takes me back to quiet, late afternoon, snow-covered streets in the winter of '65/'66.
A blast from the past! Thank you for taking me back to a simpler time and leaving a smile on my face. Great song and selection, Daniel!
Thanks pncombies, trying to pay you back for all your great choices pal. 🙃👍🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧🤴
Daniel as usual doing amazing songs for us. edit The singer is telling her she didn't have to try so hard... she already had him

@@danielvolk237 Just honest.. great song...as usual
Oh my bubblegum music days! 😊
Saw them in 1966 open for The Beach Boys. Both were super. They have so many great songs.
They also have the best summer song ever, ‘ Summer in the City’!
Hey Donald, I requested Summer in the City last year and Harri did it. What a guy. 🙃👍
@@danielvolk237 i actually remember that now that you mention it, thanks!

Fun song from a great band
Wow, I loved these guys back in Jr High and High School! Thanks for the memories!
Listen to their song Summer in the City! Thanks for all
Kenny, I requested SITC last year. Harri did it. What a guy !! 🙃👍
Great song, even better with the lyrics
You are also hearing John Sebastian playing a hand held autoharp adding to the depth of the ‘guitar’ sounds. They were very popular as the music of the late 60’s began to evolve.
He played an autoharp. A xylophone is a percussion instrrument.
This song sounds effortlessly great.
A good companion piece to this song is "Lazy Day' by Spanky and Our Gang.
I was never a big Lovin' Spoonful fan , but I really liked this song. Thanks Harri.
Loved this song & album. Happy song from the 60's.
One of my hubby's favorite songs.
