They were founded in NYC in 1965 and were very popular. Some of their other hits were Do You Believe in Magic, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?, Summer in the City, You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice, and Darling Be Home Soon.
Nobody ever lists my favorite, Jug Band Music. Out of curiosity, I just went to Wiki and found out why; although it went to #2 on the Canadian charts, the song didn't chart anywhere else, US, Europe, or Asia ...weird.
Very deservedly in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, because there were no other bands that sounded like the Spoonful. Their beginnings were in folk, and they took that influence in many different directions.
Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart? That's The Lovin' Spoonful to me. That's also a lyric in their great song, Do You Believe In Magic. One of my all-time favorites!!
"And fall on my face on somebody's new-mowed lawn". I flashed on a time when I was a kid ( I had already left home) and my mother called and asked me to put out a huge load of dirt she had gotten for the yard. I brought a friend to help and our hair was to the middle of our backs. A neighbor called the police and told them there were two hippies playing in the dirt across the street!!!!!!
the SPOONFUL were one of the iconic bands of the 60's with multi mega hits and rode the top of the charts for about 3 amazing years. vocalist and main songwriter john sebastian is a legend in his own right and wrote the theme song for one of the best tv comedies to ever come along in 'welcome back kotter' . a lot of fans of the show did not know he was the main dude behind the SPOONFUL
"In a coffee house Sebastian sat \ And after every number they'd pass the hat" --The Mamas & the Papas, "Creeque Alley" (1967) Sebastian, ie., John Sebastian, was a founder of The Lovin' Spoonful. The grittiness of their song "Summer in the City" stands in stark contrast to the chilling on a sunny day vibe of "Daydream". Check it out when you can.
Another great band I grew up with from the 60's. They had so many cool songs such as "Summer In The City", "Jug Band Music", "Nashville Cats", "Rain On The Roof", "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?", "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice". John Sebastian was their lead singer & went solo in the 70's. He had a hit with "Welcome Back" from the 1976 TV series "Welcome Back Kotter" (starred a young John Travolta).
You're right, Harri...this IS a great song for a young man with no responsibilities...but it works for an old retired guy too...even an old guy with bad knees. 🥸
Summer in the City She is Still a Mystery You Didn't Hace to be So Nice Did you Ever Have to Makeup Your Mind? Tunes that take me back to a carefree time when my Mom decided what's for supper? Lol Great tune. Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
This song brings back such a wonderful time in life, before the world revealed itself to be unsafe! Such a great song about the bliss of being carefree and irresponsible 🌺✌️
Love John Sebastians voice. Great song, ironically was out in the summer. He's very talented wrote and sung the theme song for the sitcom Welcome back Kotter mid 70s. Probably Do you believe in Magic their biggest hit.
Well, sir, let's keep that summer vibe going with the Spoonful's "Summer In The City", then see what those lazy summer days (& nights) can lead to with "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?". All YOU have to do, sir, is make up your mind which one to react to NEXT. Thank you for reminding me of those more carefree times, sir!
John Sebastian also played the bluesy harmonica in the DOORS song "Roadhouse Blues". He played the autoharp and was a fantastic whistler. 🙃👍. Sadly, John has had throat problems and lost his beautiful voice. 🤨
Great song! besides the other songs mentioned here I really love 'Darling be home soon' and 'Younger Generation'. They're thought provoking and beautiful!
Great band, very underrated, superb catalogue of songs,Do You Believe In Magic sums up perfectly how I felt in the 1960's as a music mad young lad, happy days!
John Sebastian is another national treasure. Mr. Laid Back. "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" "Did you Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind" and my personal favorite "Jug Band Music" are all first class tunes
I think I was 10 when I first heard this song and was taken with it's happy vibe, even aged 10 I could appreciate it's sentiment! The lyrics didn't resonate, I just loved the cool sound so much I spent my birthday money to buy the 45rpm record!
This song and songs like 'Red Rubber Ball' by Cyrkle came out around the same era, and were great fun-loving summer- type songs. The Rascals', 'Groovin', was another. A few more might be 'Lazing on a sunny afternoon' by the Kinks, and 'Bus Stop', by the Hollies.
The Loving Spoonful is one of my favorite groups, please react to more of their songs! Please react to The Rain,The Park And Other Things(original), Indian Lake, Hair, We Can Fly.....by The Cowsills. Thank you so much!
Hi Harri love the show I think you would enjoy christy moore as something a little different nancy Spain or cliffs of doneen would be my personal choice. Keep up the good work mate
If you could magically pull the Lovin' Spoonful out of the 1960s and placed them in a studio in 1996 to record these tracks, they would be considered contemporary hitmakers. They fit right into the eclectic decade of bands of the 1990s. that's what I loved about the 1990s. We are long overdue to cycle back to band-inspired music again. Sick of rap, hip hop, and over-commercialized EDM.
Harri, I'd recommend their "Summer In The City" and "Do You Believe in Magic"!!! 'Summer In The City" seems very appropriate today!
Also the theme from Welcome Back Kotter 😀, although I think that was just John Sebastian.
Do You Believe in Magic is one of my favorite happy songs of all time. Always gives me a lift.
Do You Believe in Magic is one of my favorite happy songs of all time. Always gives me a lift.
I'll stick to small town usa. Don't like big cities at all

John Sebastian was a heck of an under rated singer-songwriter, imo

I’m 73 and retired and live that song everyday, and I love it👍

What a Happy-go-lucky vibe! Great whistling in it too, perfect summer tune.
Lovin Spoonful "Do You Believe in Magic?"
You're right, Harri...this IS a great song for a young man with no responsibilities...but it works for an old retired guy too...even an old guy with bad knees. 🥸
Anything by the spoonful is great.
Summer in the City
She is Still a Mystery
You Didn't Hace to be So Nice
Did you Ever Have to Makeup Your Mind?
Tunes that take me back to a carefree time when my Mom decided what's for supper? Lol Great tune. Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Yes Early 1966 This song sure does bring back memories.
This song brings back such a wonderful time in life, before the world revealed itself to be unsafe! Such a great song about the bliss of being carefree and irresponsible 🌺✌️
Wonderful, on wonderful day.
I just love them so much! Brings back my teenage years. So groovy. LOL
You're hitting some good ones today Harri. Love that sixties sound.

👍on the Kotter trivia. Always watched WBK back in the day and heard this song many times, never knew.
Summer in the City was their only #1 hit, although they had many other top ten songs. A great group. 👍🙃🔥🕊️
Morning 🌄 Mr B ,it's one of those skipperdy, hoppity, song's, that take you for a ride, regards you and yours, Mangawhero
Another good band like the Rascals had some good songs back then Summer in the city was a big hit for them .
Their Summer in the City is just so, so encapsulating of that great summer vibe also!

A nice “feel good” song.
John Sebastian
Rainbows All Over Your Blues
from Woodstock '69!!!
One of my favorites 😊
What I like about the Spoonful is that none of their songs sound alike.
And yet you always knew it was them.
The Lovin Spoonful recorded this song in 1965 but I believe the song was from the thirties the original song!!
John Sebastian also played the bluesy
harmonica in the DOORS song "Roadhouse Blues". He played the autoharp and was a fantastic whistler. 🙃👍. Sadly, John has had throat problems and lost his beautiful voice.
🤨
My father really liked this song when it came out in the 60s. It sounded more like the music he grew up with.
"Coconut Grove" by these guys is utterly beautiful and ethereal...
Another great one from them is "Nashville Cats".
Harri did my request for Nashville Cats a few months ago. 👍🙃
@@danielvolk237 I'll go look. Ty
Hey Daniel, fantastic song! One of many by them and thanks for the reaction Harri.
Always happy 🙃 when you like my pick. Be happy from dockside in Ontario. 😉🇨🇦👍

What a great classic song, I haven’t heard this in many years, thanks

Very groovy. Love it!
John Sebastian and his harpsichord you need to react to them live John Sebastian wrote many songs
I agree a great Summer day song. Most of their great tunes are that way.
Oh lovely!!!!!!!!
This song came out when I was in high school. This group was loved for all the songs they put out. For me Summer in the City was an especial favorite.
Great band, very underrated, superb catalogue of songs,Do You Believe In Magic sums up perfectly how I felt in the 1960's as a music mad young lad, happy days!

There is a "relevant" Age later in life that fits this song too Hari !!! ;)
For Summer songs you might like the group War with Summer-I'm surprised no one has reacted to that yet as it was a huge hit in 1976.
The great John Sebastian 👍🏻
Loved them since I was 16! I’m now almost 71! I’ve owned their Albums since I was 17.
I really love this song. I grew up with this sixties music! 🎶🎶🎶💕💕
my go to summer song is~ summer time blues ~cover by Rush....
And duh...., at the time it was also a very relatable drug song.
Try 'Younger Girl', or 'Younger Generation' from Woodstock 1969.

Nashville cats by them is a funny little tune that once got stuck in my ear for a year. Very cool band.
so loved this group my late oldest brother turned me on to them thanks john and guys
This is the song Paul McCartney had in mind when he wrote “Good Day Sunshine.”
Always find time for a breezy stroll, Harri!
Their best song imo is "Do You Believe in Magic".
Good old John Sebastian!
i wish you well.
I'd say making you wish you were 14:or 15 gain, was John Sebastian and the Spoonfuls greatest skills.!
Hi Harri love the show I think you would enjoy christy moore as something a little different nancy Spain or cliffs of doneen would be my personal choice. Keep up the good work mate
LOVIN' SPOONFUL - Summer in the city, Highly recommended
