    After a brief year of drifting, track racing, drag racing, and sim racing, I decided to compare (in my terrible opinion) what each motorsport felt like and which one is best. Kinda. Each have their perks, and by no means is my opinion fact; it's just...opinion. So before we jump into 2024, let's talk about where you and I will be spending more time in 2024 and why we picked it. Drop a comment on which one you like the most below and why and of course if you disagree, yell at me too.

    avid track day bro here! not sure where you're looking but events in my area usually range from $200-350 depending on location/track time. people on a budget (like me) can def track their cars and not break the bank! civics, miatas, FRS/BRZs all great low running cost options! I will agree that track days are dominated by the older generations, guess that doesn't change from area to area 😂

    I do a lot of driving & the honest to god truth is, the best motorsport is whichever one I'm doing at the time. I drift a C6 Corvette, I race a Foxbody Mustang in the CMC class with NASA, I do sim racing with iRacing and I try to sim drift (not very well) on Assetto Corsa. I also have a j-swapped Miata that I show but for this discussion I'm going to ignore that for now. If you were tell me I had to give up one of the motorsports and only focus on one, my answer would depend on which one I did last. I did a 3-day drift event at Midpond this fall and for the next month I would have told you that is the one I would stick with. Then I did a NASA race at Eagles Canyon Raceway and had so much fun that I would have told you, I'm never giving up wheel to wheel racing. The next weekend I did a 2-day drift event with Lonestar Drift and once again, I was back to picking drifting. The weekend after that, I got my sim rig dialed in for drifting on AC and I thought, "this is cheap enough, I'll do this forever." The point I'm making is that it doesn't matter which motorsport you choose, if it's right for you, you're going to enjoy it and want to keep doing it. I say, pick one you can afford and do it. Don't be afraid to try other motorsports but don't feel like you're missing out if you don't try others either. They all have their pros and cons but they're all awesome!

    With you on the Sim racing, I was already a pretty big gamer before getting into cars, so I already had half the stuff to jump into it, my logitech set served me well at the start. You can save money on the rig if you're into PC gaming and know how to build it yourself.
    But yeah anyone into motorsports should well indeed invest in one because like you said, it lets you do anything. Let you drive any car that you can't otherwise get into Irl. You can do anything, Mod anything in Assetto Corsa, practice consequence free. By the time you've invested 4-5k into the SIM rig, you'd have saved the money if you were to practice in a real car with the cost of maintenance, tyres, mistakes, track fees and accidents worst case.
    Seen people who have never driven a performance car, absolutely kill it on track and drifting on their first time after coming out of just pure Sim racing. End of the day Car people and racing gamers are nerds.

      @JakeKaminskisRacing Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yeah it helps gain situational awareness for sure. However the transition from sim to the real world isn't the same.
      Sims will teach you a track layout, being aware of the cars around you without expenive consequences, as well as some decent foundation work.
      With that said. There is stuff that is drastically different from sims. Grip of the tires and learning the limits, g force, then the intricacies of the track such as where the grip is during the rain.
      Sims do help, but they are definitely not a direct translation into skill.

    • @Wzrd8
      @Wzrd8 Před 4 měsíci

      @@JakeKaminskisRacing Sims are the only place you can reliably get the same set of variables for 2+ runs. IRL you will almost never have the same conditions twice. What's important is learning to adjust with a stints evolution, you can get that in a sim and at a more precise beginning point. There are many lessons to be learned in sims. The only missing factor is G forces but you get used to that fast since it's just one more channel for feedback.

      @@JakeKaminskisRacing Some offer pretty good models but since it's optional on the sim rig I 100% agree, too few actually train for it. But even with out a model of rain flow over a near flat surface it gets the idea across. I feel the same about night mode for assetto touge drivers.

      @@JakeKaminskisRacing the event I saw on dirtfish CZcams channel was basically like field autocross. It cost $50 to compete and basically any car was allowed. The only way I could see it being hard on a car is if there were jumps which I doubt that there would be in a grassroots event. Plus you could always buy a cheap old ranger or f150 with twin I beams. Twin I beams are are extremely strong and they’re used in Baja style racing.

But the local groups charge $250/day on average for 7x20min sessions.

    Drifting shouldn't be in the running. The definition of a race is a competition between 2 or more that results in one winner, who was the fastest. Not only is the winner in drifting not always the fastest, but fastest is definitive. You KNOW who won. Drifting is the only motorsport I can think of that doesn't award a winner based on a definitive result, but rather a panel of judges that you HOPE are objective and judge with the same criteria. BTW, they aren't, and they won't.

      Autocross is a great event to start out, especially when learning car control. However once you attend a track day event the real addiction comes to play. As you need to slow everything down at the controls.
      Track Days such as the groups I have been instructing for nearly 18 years with. You get far more time behind the wheel than at an autocross event for a little more money. $250/day for nearly an hour and a half behind the wheel.
