  • The world of Strongman goes back centuries. As Terry Todd puts it, "This business of lifting weights doesn't just go back fifteen or twenty years. It's an old, old activity." Those age-old activities are still very much alive today.

      Hey Elliott! Do you know Wout Zijlstra from the Netherlands? He competed in Strongest man competition and Highland games, he's quite the character.

    You don't have to be flexible to do deadlifts. However, tight hammies will Jack you're back up, especially for taller guys.

    Don't have to be flexible to deadlift? ...unless you don't care at all about proper form I'd disagree

      aggelos daniilidis so you completely disregard his comment and move on to judge him by assuming that he can't lift very heavy.

      I guess they are not as demanding as squats are. Especially on the ankles

    • @VincentLegent
      @VincentLegent Před 9 lety +2

      yes sure but good luck getting in a good starting position if you have long torso / legs without being flexible.

    • @TheInsaiyan
      @TheInsaiyan Před 8 lety +4

      +Vincent Legent could do sumo DL for that. DL are simple. Its easier to do it properly than squats. People are mostly exegarating the deadlift that you have to do it perfect. No. Just have a straight back and keep the bar near your body.

      I don't know if he is actually Scottish, but he did compete a in the highland games, but he is best known for his appearances in WSM. He won multiple WSM titles and is one of the strongest men to ever lived. His name is Bill Kasmaier.

    i dont mean to be offending the way im saying it but when i see these movements it just looks like olympic lifting but without the speed... like the "austrian aok" i dont see whats impressive in doing a clean and jerk but in a slow motion... its much more impressive (in my opinion) to do a clean and jerk (two fluid motions with high accuracy, speed and strenght) then lifting a 500lbs log (and thats less the the CandJ records even doing it as slopy as you want to)

    • @RRtoiPPiotRR
      @RRtoiPPiotRR Před 9 lety +14

      I totally understand that, but thats where our interests lie.
      Whats more impressive (to me atleast) about pressing a 500lb log above your head vs a much heavier C&J is that the log is an awkward object and meant to challenge.
      Where as the barbell was designed in a fashion to give a mechanical advantage to the body so that ridiculous weights can be lifted.
      The respect in Olympic lifting comes from training the nervous system to respond to a specific set of circumstances. (Barbell)
      In strongman the respect comes from being able to lift heavy weight in any circumstance (log,dumbell, axel, sandbag, stone)
      I love both sports but strongman is what captivates my interest most. : )

    • @MrShady2099
      @MrShady2099 Před 9 lety +1

      RRtoiPPiotRR Doesnt the log have hanles in?

    • @RRtoiPPiotRR
      @RRtoiPPiotRR Před 9 lety +1

      Laurent Baril
      Yeah- that doesn't mean its not award to lift.
      The smallest log (10" diameter) vs a barbell made for the sport of weight lifting.
      Try a max weight on both and you will see the difference for your self : )

    • @MrShady2099
      @MrShady2099 Před 9 lety

      RRtoiPPiotRR Im not saying that strongman isnt amazing and unique, If I could rephrase my original comment I would actually state that the movements they put are poorly chosen and that there are a lot more of strongman movements then those.

    • @moisesr742
      @moisesr742 Před 9 lety +1

      I'm more impressed with the slow lift cause it takes real strength to hold it longer.
