MIKE PORTNOY LEAVES DREAM THEATER, SHARES MINDSET

- Mike Portnoy has left Dream Theater -- which will carry on -- and in an interview shortly before the announcement he talked about his headspace, Avenged Sevenfold and where he thought Dream Theater was at.
Just glad I saw them open for Iron Maiden with Mike one last time just before he left... The Montreal show... there was a power failure a couple minutes into As I Am.... the band left the stage....except Mikey....who stayed out, entertaining the audience with no power....banging out a solo....finishing with Maidens Run To The Hills...while 14,000 people sang the lyrics... He turned a local electricians mistake into a PRICELESS memory.. \m/ Rock on my brother

Ok I attended that concert in Denver an when I was going to Denver from Colorado Spring I blew I tire, then I realized that a friend had my jack, to make the long story short I just heard half of the las song of DT=( Iron Maiden rocked!
10 years passed, and I'm still heartbroken.
get over it jesus christ man
@@simonh9987 yeah right. Mangini is incredible!
I think heartbroken is a bit of an exaggeration
Get over it. I can't hear anything different.
i realize I am kind of off topic but do anybody know a good site to stream newly released movies online?
Mike, you and the rest of Dream Theater are truly my heroes, your music has inspired me to become not only a better musician, but a better person. as much as your leaving dream theater pains me, i respect your decision, and i wish you nothing but the best, and i only hope that someday you will rejoin them. its just not DT without you man.
I can't believe that he even had to ask the DT fans to not hate Avenged Sevenfold I mean what? Shit happens, guys
He's tied for my favorite drummer of all time, and at my age that's alot of drummers to contend with.
I was intially upset at first that Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater as it was a true complete shock but looking back on it now, i say it was a very good move for him, look at how much he's accomplished since he left, he's made some of the best music ever with so many different bands and artists like Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, Flying Colors, Neal Morse Band and just recently Sons Of Apollo to name a few. I fully understand and respect that Mike wanted to venture out to do different projects as i believe if he didn't leave, i'm not too sure if we would have had all this great stuff. I believe he will reunite with Dream Theater one day and finish what they started but for now he's happy doing his own & he's doing a great job at it.
i just saw the audition video. nice thanks man.
11 years later, I'm quite impressed with Mike Mangini. The Astonishing and A Dramatic Turn of Events are some of the best albums of all time in my opinion.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@rodrigoconcha9 ???
@@rodrigoconcha9 mangini makes portnoy look like a toddler playing the drums ngl... portnoy was a student of berklee, while magnini was a godamn professor... so think abt your emojis bud
After 13 years.. He's back! 🤘
First off, Portnoy went on tour with A7X then left. Second, after he left he asked to rejoin Dream Theater, but was shot down by their attorney (that means lawyer) due to Mangini joining the band. So yeah, Portnoy left because he was exhausted, found out his mistake and tried to go back. He didn't "join" A7X, he filled in for them. He does it all the time. Just because you perform with someone doesn't mean you're in their band.
Im ok with that
If I remember correctly reason why mike filled in with A7X is because he was jimmys favorite drummer and what better way to honor the rev than by having his favorite drummer fill in to finish the album
Mike wanted a break and he indeed got it. I mean what better way is there for a professional drummer to rest then to play drums with one of the famous bands Ax7, this is the kind of new change of pace that he was looking for in the first place right?. This way he can keep doing what he loves , keep the pay check rolling and be boredom-free ( like he wanted) and he wanted a rest/ change of pace, he got it that too even with Ax7.(even better). though Mangini a beast behind the kit, we all miss Portnoy don't we? :D anyways I'm really happy to see him in Winery Dogs with Ritchie and Billy. They sound amazing, looks even more and they all seem to connect with each other and have a great time.
well said !!!
+Harshit Arora thanks mate.
I still can't believe Mike left the band that was practically his second family. His talent on the drums was just incredible and I hear it on every DT album he plays on. It still shocks me Mike left. Time goes on I guess and I hope he finds another great band. Good luck Mike.
you still didn't figure it out? he didn't leave
he needed a break and they said "okay, bye!!!"
they're fucking assholes
@@zerpblerd5966 actually no. He wanted to take a 5 year break, they didn't want to, so he left or was fired. It was supposed to be a 10 year thing, I believe, but somewhere along the line that changed. They hired a new drummer (Mangini) and shortly afte rhe got settled in, Portnoy asked to rejoin, but was rejected, probably because Mangini had just joined. They didn't want to crush a man like that just after he got settled in. There were no easy decisions in this scenario. At least they made some
@@ArcherWillows no
this band is a group of gentlemen
*djentleman...i actually kind of hate myself now, but couldn't resist...
Maybe before he left DT, after that, I've seen some douchebaggery from Mike that is really disappointing, like that video with PSMS where Mike lost his sh"t and start throwing drum-set parts all over the place
I wish that he had stayed with Avenged Sevenfold, one of my favorite bands with probably my favorite drummer
Mike: yeah as long as the paycheck is substantial I’m totally on board
True, people are really harsh on him, i think he´s an amazing guy, always excited and lifting the spirits up.
so what? I still love DT and i still love Mike!!! He have really awesome personality and i can understand the reasons he left. I love u man!!!
thank god its badminton season...
As a longtime metal/hard rock fan, I truly respect Mike Portnoy's decision. I like Avenged Sevenfold, okay? Not ashamed of it at all. They're actually one of my top favorite bands, along with Motley Crue, Godsmack, and Metallica. They have the kind of old-school hard rock sound you don't hear in this decade anymore and I admire that. If you don't agree with me on this statement, I'm not gonna care. Rock on to Mike Portnoy and A7X!
thx for explaination.
7 years later... still sucks that he left. Neal Morse Band rules though
perhaps, i mean perhaps they all need a year time off for reflexion and slow down or dedicate to they own personal proyect.
the real problem was that the other members of dream theater didnt want a time off, so Portnoy went off.
I think Mike wanted somthing like 5 years off of DT.
Matthewbraaten I think that was his first idea, but ideas are negotiable. 5 years is a lot of time
+Leonardo C indeed. Maybe something like take 18 months - 2 years so Mike can record and your with Avenged.
appreciate him for the steps he has taken, if he wants to keep the Dt spirit alive..he is right to keep his space. n also A7x we deeply miss rev's presence but Mike's presence will feel the empty spaces and sprout out more. good luck and all the best \\m//
Hope they will find a good drummer for the new album
i can totally understand where he is coming from in just wanting to play !!! all the best mike and dream theater (certainly wont be the same without you my friend. take care
Both bands are great and you shouldnt compare two generations of metal to each other. Its evolved throughout time. Also, everyone commenting that A7X sucks or DT sucks should re-evaluate their thoughts. Are you doing anything impressive?
Dream Theater needs Portnoy more than ever now :(
Why? Manchini is nou good?
I think....if u want 5 years off because of burn out..fine but, to say you 'steer the ship' and make derogatory references of your singer THEN expect them to not be DT for 5 years?? That's when you take it too far. I think DT felt that way and, when Avenged didn't want Portnoy, he came crawling back... and, make no mistake, crawling..
Not really.. people tend to deny their new songs even if it sounds actually good being Mangini behind the Drums. What's toxic is the fanbase, not the band itself. They DT band members are happier and can move on without him. I'm not a portnoy hater but that is how things are running. Why not support the band instead?
@@axljohnamora7324 well said
welcome back
mike was always the backbone for DT, it'll burn you out after 25 years... i don't get people that won't understand the pressure and so. Mike is a great person, lets see ourselves after 25 years full touring with a band....
Welcome home Mr Portnoy ❣
IMHO a7x starting to sounds like metallica's music. the beat of the drums is just killing the old a7x since the legendary rev passed.
yep it started from nightmare with the song buried alive it has a metallica like feel to it
good thing they have a new drummer now.
DeadeyesX311 I agree that buried alive sounds like metallica but, The Rev wrote all the drum parts and the song while he was still alive.
@Coreyknot If you mean the very opening track with Petrucci playing the palm-muted riff, it is "I Walk Beside You" from "Octavarium"
Everyone has to hate on one band on the other. I love both for different reasons. You can love both
I dont know how you can go from being in dream theater, making albums like images and words, scenes from a memory, and being at the fore front of your genre from the beggining, to being in a band like avenged seven fold, he must be on crack,
2:05
YO DAWG I HEARD YOU LIKE TIME OFF. SO I PUT TIME OFF IN YOUR TIME OFF SO YOU CAN TAKE TIME OFF WHILE YOU'RE HAVING YO TIME OFF.
12 years have passed and i just saw him come back to play with petrucci live. 🥺
What DT song are playing on the video?
Its funny cus Avenged Sevenfold desperately need someone like Mike to spicen up their extremely generic rock sound
Mikel Frausto obvious troll is obvious
too late. Wackerman is op drummer for a7x.
Before him i dream about Portnoy in avenged sevenfold
@@jackkelly6251 nah. Avenged is beat. Always has been. Boring stuff. Nice taste, tho! LOL
all the members are fantastic, except the voice !
what song's at the beginning?im not a DT fan but i like it
Which song are they playing at the beginning of the video?
He just wanted a band with more modern day recognition so he would get noticed thats all
Damn that's deep, makes sense. I mean the dude has blue facial hair and wears shades inside...
I agree, and that's okay. He's still young and incredibly talented. It must get super boring playing the same songs for years.
@@C0C0PR Not young. But I agree with the other points lol
Mike you dummy! Whhhyyyyyyyyyy!!???
I AGREE WHY WE ALL MISS YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY
Is it not understandable that he wanted to take a break from the write, record, and tour life. That sounds pretty stressful, at least after doing it for years and years.
Right from SFAM to BC&SL, it was the cycle of "write, record and tour", and Portnoy got sick of it and desperately needed a break. In BC&SL, I felt that album was the lowest point for Portnoy as a drummer, but the highest point as a writer.
I'm a long time A7X fanatic and for the past few years, a loyal Dream Theater fan. After the Rev's passing (a very sad time for any A7X fan) I was delighted to see Portnoy join the family for their album Nightmare. However, I would have never expected, nor wanted, Mike to leave Dream Theater. However, after reading his blog I am accepting of his decision and hope for the best for both bands. Sorry to rant, but it needed to be said from a hardcore A7X fan.
So I did not expect to see that when I turned on my CZcams this morning!
But I agree with the guys in Dream Theatre - good luck to Mike with whatever he does.
He's a great drummer.. And he does bring that element of energy that gets a crowd moving. But the downfall of Portnoy has always been himself. He is one of those types of guys that are just to into self. The truth is he always bragged about controling Dream theater. But that's only true to a deg. And his break that he needed was a cover up for him so he wouldn't sound so bad. Because the thing is. He got way too involved with playing drums with multiple bands. And when that happens your loyalty goes out the window. So he left Dream Theater because he had no more loyalty to the band. It was the very thing that James Hatfield felt about Jason Newstead wanting to do side projects. Look what happed there.
Doing a side project can work. But your taking a huge risk in letting it go to your head with the success.
So in Mike's case. It really all started with Liquid tension. Even though myung was the only one not in the band. It was essentially the gateway drug that opened up the door for him to start fading away.. Then that led to transatlantic. Wich was totally amazing.. But I could see it coming after that. And I'm honestly surprised that he stayed with Dream theater as long as he did after that. I like Mike mangini, and he's a good drummer. But in all honesty he doesn't bring that excitement that Portnoy brought. It would be sweet to see them all reunite and play together again. That would be epic!
I wish Portnoy stayed and LaBrie left. I can't stand his voice anymore.
yesss!
Its fine on albums but I´m afraid his voice doesnt hold up live anymore. IaW-tour has really wore him out.
Jakob Strand I saw him at like day 3 of the tour and he still sounded horrible, even with the band tuning down half a step.
me too...!!!
HE IS WEAK !!
what's the name of the back track at the beginning??
@phishUMup
I could hear the gears grinding a bit on Train of Thought and the creative machine coming to a crashing halt on Octavarium, (which dropped my jaw as to how low the sank).
They're fine without Portnoy if not better. Love Mike but Petrucci has always been the man of Dream Theater. Petrucci is obviously a guy that is irreplaceable. When he decides to stop, Dream Theater's amazing run will come to an end.
you know what? i dont know why i posted this comment..i dont know why but ive just started to appreciate even more what Portnoy did for DT. youre right.
***** In personality? I don't know about that. Recently a fan of him wanted an autograph but was wearing a post-Portnoy DT T-shirt. Mike got all butt hurt and even complained online who people shouldn't do this shit on him.
Ask anyone and they will say Petrucci is a really boring guitarist. They should replace him.
+WowFan991 I agree patrucci is boring.
WowFan991 no, just, no.
lol he's so full of himself, most certainly there's some douchebaggery there =) "oh it's not like i'm looking for work, everyone comes to me.. in dt i run the whole show i make all the... (tries to tone it down but fails) i'm steerng the ship!" hahaha well aye-aye, cap'n!!
omg and the air quotes on being "just the drummer", imlying that even if he's only playing drums in a band, he's still so much more than just a drummer
He was the producer in Dream Theater, he decided everything and he was so tired of that he had to leave. I don't think he's a douchebag because of that
no, he's a douchebag because of the way he acts and carries himself in this particular interview. I think I was specific enough pointing out the parts when he gets all ego way too obviously and shamelessly. I guess at one point his ego got so blown out of proportion that decided that he's bigger than DT on his own. big mistake...
grannywalter I disagree
I think he's mediocre and overrated as a drummer and a narcissistic asshole as a human being. I'm sorry, but I just can't help it. If he'd just take himself a tiny bit less seriously, he'd be an ok guy and a decent drummer.
whats the name of that DT song at the end?
Winery Dogs was a great project. I hope they still have enough music amongst the three of them to do more.
he couldnt stand that weak gay voice anymore
What song in early video??
what was the song on the beggining of the vid?
what's the name of the DT song at the beginning?
What title of the first song? Can someone tell me?
name of the song in the beggining?
i think its a good change for dream theater to get a new drummer, mike mangini is going to do a great job and hopefully change the bands sound in a good way. im really excited for the new album to come out :D!
Mike I know what you're saying...love you...meester drummer...greatings from Amsterdam
Even if DT continues, They will never be the same without Portnoy. Portnoy is a legend. And he will always be.
What concert scene is that at 0:24??????
I walk beside you Mike... We all walk beside you...
@DarkAddagio That's old news, now it's only Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt, and the project it's called "Storm Corrosion". It'll come out sometime in 2011.
For all the people who seemed to be misled by Mikes departure, he didn't permanently leave. He was going to take a longer than supposed break. Once he finished helping A7x, he wanted to get back with DT. They rejected his return, and they picked somebody else to move on. Mike actually took DT to court because the band name was his (his dad actually created the name). Sadly, he lost the case, and he had been separated from DT since. He now works with Adrenaline Mob, and Flying colors. Oh, and Ne
yep
they're fucking assholes
what song was DT playing there?
Isn't that the guy from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back?
0:15 Which song is that one?
@DarkAddagio Mike playing for Opeth or Porcupine Tree... :O
that would be awesome!
DT is my fave band, and I definitely think he did the right thing. If his heart isn't completely in it why bother. They'll reunite and when they do It will be fresh and probably be their best work yet.
I truly don't understand.. I just want him to know that we still love him... and ThAT... Dream Theater is definetly not gonna be the same without him....
this has happened to many of the bands i've listened to over the past 20 years i've been alive, the majority dedicated to dream theater, although it says he's taking a break which is good cos it's his decision, it kind of breaks my heart when i declined to go to the last concert they performed down here, and he's left after so many years of pure skill and awe-inspiring ability, i'd want a break too, in my bias opinion i can't see a better replacement for the a7x drum position? just curious
@infoshooter man you guys are phacken brutal, and yes i can see where that coming from too...
i think so !!!!!!!!!
@ElGolemista I would agree in some technical aspects, but you can't deny that members like Synyster Gates have got some skill behind them. I agree, being a DT fan.........that is really a massive gap left in DT, the man was the groundwork.
This really points out that you leave your comments to yourself until youre solidly decided and have a plan. I've always felt that DT was best at being the sum of their influences as opposed to a unique sounding group. Over 25 years of amazing music, but anybody that experienced the trapped prog metal scene of Long Island back in the day will tell you why they came out on top back then. They had the right mix of obvious influences that were taken seriously by both musicians and rock fans.
Talent doesn't always sell albums though, lets be fair..... I agree with your point 100%, but talent doesn't tend to affect how successful you are in the music industry. Its all about producing what the majority want.
Its good that the DT are all mature about it. There would be alot of bands that would be all angry and full of animosity its a fine change
Mike is a great drummer. He won't be lost.
Let's hope so
Isn't that Jordan Rudess's house? The woods behind?
i hope mike is enjoying his "tyme owff" xD
I'm not really a fan of Dream Theater, nor A7X (we all have our own tastes as someone stated earlier)... but I absolutely love Mike Portnoy's Character and Showmanship!
Kudos to the man to living his endeavours!
Do whatever you want and the true fans will support you
@Trumavarium I completely agree, any true DT fan would respect Mike's decision, regardless of the circumstances. DT has had a perfect run, it's time to go on hiatus and return when it is right, although the band is continuing i just want to hear Mike on the next album, no one else. I'm hoping DT will continue complete again.
mike: we will remember to you by always and we will follow to you
tanks i love
After much mutual collaboration, Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) decided in 2005, forming a band, and that same year, spoke with Mike Portnoy to take charge of the drums. I do not have a source where you can verify the information, because I took an extract from an interview with Steven Wilson for the Chilean magazine ROCKAXIS. Portnoy will probably play with A7X, until Opeth and/or Porcupine Tree, finished their tour or something. We wish the best for Mike :D
The reason I latched onto Dream Theater was basically because of two guys: Petrucci and Portnoy. I saw them perform in the G3 Japan video and was just blown away. I found out they were both in DT and the rest was history. To hear that Portnoy will no longer be manning the percussive monster for DT is sad. As with many others, I am hoping Portnoy will rejoin DT in the future, sooner if some divine force wills it.

Philippines
I'm sorry man, but it seems as it won't happen in the next few years
Here its the question that no one does who will replace him at DT? i dont have many manes to said one, and im saying could be on the list Aquiles Priester....any other name?
So glad i got to see them when they toured with Iron Maiden... It would have been so disappointing if i hadn't seen them in concert when Portnoy was there. I probably would have cried a tad more when i heard about it.
God i'm gonna miss Portnoy...
We should all just wish M.P. well. Everyone needs a 'change of Seasons' from time to time. However, with that being said, they'll have to get some big name drummer to fill his shoes. All the best Mike, hope we see you back with DT in the future....
i walk beside you
whats with the dude hanging at 0:25?
There isn't a "better" drummer than mike portnoy. They will find someone equal but different if that makes any sense. They won't be the same without Mike but who's to say they won't be better? I know my preference is MP as that is what I've listened to since 1992 when I first became a fan of DT. It saddens me that my all time fav band is losing a member but it may not be as bad as one might suspect.
Good luck to both the band and MP. You have had a huge impact on my life.
Peace
I think he will be back in DT in less than 2 years...I hope. En 2 años estará de regreso. Alguien sabe quien tomará su lugar?. Anybody knows who'll take Mike´s place? Mike Mangini?
Amen!
@Burbridge92 A7X didn't got rid of Him, however their future is undetermined by now. Mike says he's enjoying being just the drummer after years of being the main composer/producer/decision maker (or however it is).
Hope you understand.
Well, damn... I really never thought Dream Theater's most core member would end up leaving the band he founded. They had a solid line up for a long time, and managed to stick together through everything, including James LaBrie's vocal cord damage, but they couldn't manage to give their drummer man some time off for a year or so?
What the hell Dream Theater - You're damn right your fans are upset
Hope they continue to work together, and possibly reunite later down the road.
I think he will return after a year or so
Why did this show up in my feed? This is beyond old news!
Just pray the next DT album will still be great.
He said he wanted to be just the drummer...But what i heard is that the name "Black clouds & Silver linings" was his idea!!!
