- We caught up with Mike Portnoy on the Uproar Tour in late August 2010 before he announced he will no longer be a part of Dream Theater. In Part 2 Portnoy discusses going on the road with Avenged Sevenfold, the Uproar Stage set-up and being elderstatesmen with Hellyeah and former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul.
Im a dream theater nut. But Portnoy hopping in with Avenged got me listening to a new band. Both bands are equally awesome. No need to hate in either direction....
It's kind of shitty that Avenged Sevenfold ditched Mike Portnoy after Mike put his whole future on the line for them and sacrificed his gig with Dream Theater. It's like "Goodbye Mike...we used you for a while but now we don't need you anymore so, ta!"
i cant wait i got my tickets for a7x and disturbed on the 29th. Did i say i had back stage vip paces sooo excited :D
People who say A7X have either sold out or have changed are stupid, there's a radio interview with M. Shadows and Synester from the city of evil era where they say that they are simply a rock band, nothing more, nothing less which means that they can make whatever they want, in my opinion they have stayed faithful and are very brave to try new stuff at the same time. If people gave them a chance i think they'd like them. Don't compare them to Dream Theatre, they're both good bands.
Mike was only temporary while they recorded the album and did their tour... theyre getting a new drummer in 2011. Mike did it bc the rev looked up to him as a drummer

@Drivenut4 Good point, but I think everyone knows that Portnoy was more than recognized while he was with DT.
@metalslut1 they didn't want to replace jimmy immediatly, because they were still going through the recovery process through jimmy dieing, if youwill, watch the 4 part radio show with matt shadows, he explains everything. he also gives his xbox live gamertag :D

@ikillnazies There is a perfectly good reason for his voice being different live. One you probably live in an area where it really didn't matter to play a good performance. Two, deep growls are hard to do performance after performance. This adds into Number 1. Three, Atleast he doesn't need technology to alter his voice on the album or at any of the performances they deemed important enough. I don't mean to sound rude but after watching a documantary on them I can understand why they prioritize.
@murderdoll197666 He didn't leave. He wanted a break but the band wanted to keep moving. He was basically kicked out of the band he created.
I don't think he was ever going to join the band....he was only helping out. Otherwise it'd always be "Avenged Sevenfold and Mike Portnoy." Now they have Arin, and I think he has a better chance of becoming part of the band for good.

@donangry Someone's a little angry. He's still in Transatlantic, he's still in Liquid Tension Experiment, he's just not in DT anymore and it's not his fault. He was filling in for A7X as a sign of respect for the Rev. Now that DT didn't want to take him back you call him a sell out? Yea that makes sense.
@davidg0609 I agree to you, but I think that Dream Theater is just allot deeper and way better as musicians. Yet, I am happy that Portnoy is having a good time with A7X. His Spirit Still Carries on.
@oxic93 I do believe that Dream Theater won't be the same without him but to me it seems that your insulting him by saying he can't go anywhere else.. He is a musical genius, he is incredibly versatile; He belongs wherever he plays. He's just filling in.
Obviously if Mike left Dream Theater to play with A7x there is a reason. He must see know that this is really where he wants to be.
@TheMaster666666 I respect your idea but I'm afraid that it is erroneous. There is no way that I can think of to make an "X" by folding lines on themselves. If there name had something to do with crossing or something like that it would be a bit more logical. But I see no folding of lines involved in the making of an X. All I see are crossing lines.
@jsbuck99 so true avenged sevenfold puts out something for EVERYBODY because their style is so diverse ur right there really is nothing to hate

@metalslut1 Avenged didn't kick Mike Portnoy out, they always said that he was gunna tour for a little bit and he didn't leave Dream Theater for Avenged. And Avenged don't suck, IN MY OPINION they are the best band in the world.
@Andyandhisboard yeah i was at an uproar concert n 90% of the people there were there for a7x. I left after a7x so idk how disturbed performs but i heard that the singers voice isn't even the same live because they don't have technology to back it up.
He just wants to say he prefers A7X! :D

@TheMightyLiam you are a fucking boss for saying that, that is exactly how these people should act. DT might not be as good as A7X, A7X might not be as good as DT, in a real musician's opinion, you don't say your band is better than them, and you don't say their band is better than yours.

No, obviously your opinions come from a ton of mainstream influence, and you will never see past your walls, but the simple fact that you think I only listen to Lady Gaga is hilarious!! I don't even need to get into the half of the Metal, Prog-Metal, and True-Metal bands I listen to.
I fully respect him for going on tour with A7X. Obviously it's not the same without the rev, But i saw them live on the uproar tour and mike did an amazing job. It's awesome that he's helping out so much. A7X foREVer

I love A7X but there is no way they deserve portnoy more than DT i mean seriously DT IS!!! portnoy you cant replace him as for A7X you can either face facts or lie to yourself though the Nighmare album was good portnoys drumming downgraded alot for most of the songs excluding a couple like Save Me i dont want Portnoy with A7X he will lose that amazing touch that always left you asking "how the fuck did he do that!!!?" :\

And if the band came up with that I feel really sorry for their parents. They probably thought their children knew they're alphebet by that point.))
i love DT but i just read that they will never have mike back. He tried to rejoin, and they didn't let him...so no all those people asking for him to go back...he tried... he probably saw he made a bit of a mistake... im right behind DT and mike but... i dunno i can comment on whats going on :S mike needs to make his mind up, and if he wants to rejoin i think DT Need to give it a better thought...
I like Portnoy, it seems to be a good guy, but I don't like the way he plays. I mean, he's awesome, but he plays in a totally different way than Jimmy did. And I like a lot more "The Rev way".

I have been a Dream Theater fan for a looonngg time.. and never really liked A7X.. but when i heard Mike was honoring their drummer by finishing the album.. I thought it was great! To all you big ball sucking Dream Theater nerds.. grow up, and open your mind.. I think its pure jealousy haha Oh NO!!! He's being recognized now!!!

it is dumb to blame A7X for what happened in DT and it is
also dumb to compare the Bands, to me DT is the best band ever
but it is matter of what you like,
it is a big blow for DT they not only lose a drummer, Mike is a guy
that do a lot songwriting and some nice backing vocals
@sj47rocker Yea thats exaclty what happened. That is the first concert i actually leave before it ends lol. on there last song i just bounced out and beat the traffic rush too. lots of people left when disturbed got on.

Just got back from tempe beach park. avenged sevenfold put on the best show. when disturbed came on they were okay and played alright. the crowd was dead already tho haha i was done almost passed out good moshpits only started by avenged. mike is a good drummer needs more pracitce tho real good for jumping in 5 months ago.
@MrBoffom Too bad he played hardball with Dream Theater. I don't blame DT for not taking him back though. He tried to come back to DT ONLY after he was canned from Avenged Sevenfold. He took a chance and it backfired on him. It's really not cool of Avenged Sevenfold to can Mike either, especially after Mike sacrificed his gig to help them out. I think Avenged Sevenfold is an uncreative, corporate, nu-metal band that were lucky to have Mike Portnoy.
@GuYGoldDimond He quit because he was having more fun in his other projects(Transatlantic, Numerous Tribute bands, etc.) Not to join Avenged Sevenfold.
@TheFishSnacks i was at that tour in north carolina. The thing happened there. Everybody left after avenged and disturbeds voice was bad

@sj47rocker Yea u noticed it too lol. yea everybody started leaving when disturbed was playing. Idk what happened to disturbed the first disturbed concert i went to was EPIC now they lost there touch.
@jsbuck99 Not true. I own two albums and found at most 2 songs on both that I could stand. Meanwhile with other bands like SOAD, Disturbed, and Evanescence I enjoy their entire albums. To me it just looks like they are borrowing publicity from Mike. And I agree with RyanTF2, he has basically left a sophisticated and unique band and went to tacky and predictable. I swear I can barely hear a difference between their songs and also songs from mettalica. Sound too similar for me to appreciate A7F.
Portnoy is a really great guy, but a7x has really lost some of their spark.

also he had been playing with DT for 25 years and they did not kick him . they were shocked .... i dont hate A7x and i think mike deserves a Rest also i wanna see him playing bat country live.......but now who will keep up with petrucci and jordan? :(

@jsbuck99 I cant believe disturbed headlined the uproar tour... They have a total of like 4 good songs... I left after like disturbed played like 3 songs.... no stage presence whatsoever... They rely on their shitty CGI video background instead of good stage presence.
@noahferris bullshit man - they are seriously creative and so what if they come up with catchy melodies (typical of mainstream music) - they're awesome! I think people don't give them a chance - great bunch of guys and all very talented x
@All 2/2 Look at the video portrayed in this one of MP behind the kit, listen to the music, it sucks, its crap. The vocalist sucks. The only reason why the crowd cheers, is because they don't know what real, talented, musicianship is all about. The only REASON that MP would ever join into A7X is because he wanted to take a break from DT because of HOW HARD THE MUSIC IS and how EASY A7X's music is in comparison. The fact that you all love this mainstream crap is because you don't know talent.

I was an A7X nut but now I got into Dream Theater and really to me there's just nothing like it, there's no insane virtuoso madness like that, Dream Theater is like 4 absolute masters having crazy fun with all the scales, technics, harmonies, odd time signatures..just trying to push the boundaries exploring metal and what they can do with it, finally a metal band that goes beyond the tired pre-established song structure, a band that doesn't follow pre-determined paths and still makes sense

I'm A7x big fan, when i start to listen another band for example dream theatre, i like them and but i also still like A7x. I still Explore other bands, and i still like a7x.

The dude died cause he had a drug problem, just like Layne Staley of Alice in Chains.
Maybe if he wasn't so into the drugs, there would still be a real A7X and they would also not be known as "Responsible for one of the greatest prog-metal bands breakup."

@GuYGoldDimond coz he needed a break from the band. he had been in the band for 25 years without a break, and he just got bored.
I for one think that things could have worked out if Portnoy became the drummer of BOTH Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold. Things would have gone like this. Mike takes a 5 year break and works with A7X. Then this cycle happens.
1)Mike stays with DT, tours with them for 3 years while A7X takes a break
2) Mike stays with A7X, tours with them for 2 years while, DT takes a break
3) Mike, DT, and A7X takes a break.
Then thecycle goes on.

The fact that he was only into drugs and didn't care about the music, & once he was more into the drugs, he only walked his way to death. Unknowns like Yanov Bercier, or people like ABRB and my man's band Havoc & Malice are better. And don't judge from crap videos either, come to a live show or buy a c.d. and you will see what I mean, wait, your mainstream opinion doesn't matter!
