- We caught up with Mike Portnoy on the Uproar Tour in late August 2010 before he announced he will no longer be a part of Dream Theater. In part 1 he talks about getting involved with Avenged Sevenfold, bonding with the band over Jimmy The Rev Sullivan death, and using the Rev's drum parts to record Nightmare.
I really wish Mike stayed with A7X...

@@oldGnRrocks1 Actually, Mike decided not to stay with A7X because he was so committed to Dream Theater only to announce 5 months later that he was getting "burned out" on Dream Theater and left the band. Mike had the mindset that he was just a temporary fill-in for A7X until they got a more permanent drummer. I don't think he ever offered to stay more than a year.
I think Mike Portnoy just help A7X finish the Nightmare album, in honor of the Rev.

RIP The Rev, it is impossible to tell who is the best, but your are my favorite drummer of all time.
You can hear Halestorm playing in the background. It's crazy to think 5 years later, A7X is on it's fourth drummer, and have already released a new album since Nightmare, Portnoy is no longer in Dream Theater, and Halestorm is a headliner now. Times flies!
Mike is a hell of a drummer, and he was the Rev's biggest inspiration. Rev is always going to be the greatest drummer who ever lived in my opinion. RIP The Rev

@chromakey84 You're overflowing with ignorance. Verse-chorus-verse-chorus? Your argument is invalid kid. Take a listen to a song ''save me'' by A7X. That will change your opinion. DT is great, i agree, but their music goes way too far at times. Some of you dt fans make me real sick, convinced that you know everything about music just because of their 15 minute technical nonsense. They can play in 16/19 time signature, so what? It's not about that. It's about passion,and DT lacks it often.
The only thing that I can say is that Portnoy is in the top 3 of all-time greatest drummers that has ever lived. I think his addition to Avenged Sevenfold is a pretty excellent fit. I have always liked AS, and have been a huge Dream Theater fan for eternity. Best of luck to them all.
I for one hope that they do reunite, but for now, it would be cool to see different drummers join DT in the interim. It would be awesome to see someone like Virgil Donati work with the DT guys.

so Mike is telling us that The Rev left drum beats for ALL the songs on the Nightmare album, yet we only get to listen to the nightmare (song) demo? -.-
Funny how there are millions of views for DT and AS, but barely over 150k for interviews of Portnoy.
Plus, isn't that one of the last interviews when Mike was still in DT? It's gotta be at least important for fans.

nicely said mike cool. unfortunately i didn't realy get into avenged until i heard of jimmys passing but on hearing thier stuff it's a shame i didn't get to hear thier stuff earlier. best off luck to them and mike.

I'm anxious to hear what DT's new drummer is going to sound like. I hope he does just as good a job as Portnoy did. By the way, for all the DT fans, he makes an Octavarium reference at 3:59 when he says "came full circle." I'm glad I caught that =)

@YusukeTomB Just a question for you: where did you get that MP is the top 3? Where the hell did you get that? In my book, and judging by the tons of excellent music I happen to own (and explore other), the top three is clearly out of question. You can say what you want to try influence others but the truth is some place else, to be polite here. He is not anywhere near the top - there are many others who ARE better not just skillwise only but more imaginative, too. He is just very good.

He showed us everything what he got by Dream Theater his skills his speed his unbelieveable energy and many other things!
I think we all want him back by Dream Theater, but if he isn't coming back, I wish him the best for his incredible life and career!

I think I can relate to Mike's feelings on this. It's not easy being part of a group full of super musicians; once they settle into their roles, because of their musical knowledge, they begin to have stronger and stronger ideas about the music. And that can be a source for disagreement.
Seems like Portnoy's working with AS for emotional reasons, sometimes moving forward and growing doesn't mean playing more & more complex stuff...

Sure A7x may or may not be better than dream theater....but that doesn't mean either sucks.
I for one think that things could have worked out if Portnoy became the drummer of BOTH Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold. Things would have gone like this. Mike takes a 5 year break and works with A7X. Then this cycle happens.
1)Mike stays with DT, tours with them for 3 years while A7X takes a break
2) Mike stays with A7X, tours with them for 2 years while, DT takes a break
3) Mike, DT, and A7X takes a break.
Then thecycle goes on.
I would love to see Portnoy in Annihilator. Would be interesting.

@briannashadz I completely agree. Like he said, the Rev's drumming style was only slightly different from his own, and he said he picked it up pretty quickly. This is the guy who inspired him the most, and is the musical equivalent of the Rev's father, and the closest they'll come to a drummer like the Rev. Portnoy's definitely the guy.

Mike Portnoy was the driving force behind DT and the band won't be the same without him. Alot of people will rush to support Mike in his decision to leave Dream Theater, based on his accomplishments and contributions to the band and to music in general, but let us not forget that none of this has been mandatory and that he could have taken a break at any time. I think its more selfish than he is admitting, but whatever the case, maybe some of the other members of DT can be heard now

makes me sad that he left. after listening to Octavarium, and six degrees of inner turbulence. two if the greatest prog songs of all time. i respect his decision but man, what a heart breaker.

you know, I actually found out he left watching this video....I really hope he goes back to Dream Theater...they're harmony with him...it would be impossible to replace him...I respect the choice he made, but honestly it's the guys that he's worked with for the last 2 decades...he's never going to connect with any other ppl as deep as he has with the rest of DT...they sound how they sound because they know each other, and that's such a valuable thing that he really should consider going back....

from what i have read, all the guy in avenged didnt want portnoy to leave DT but they also didn't want him to stay in avenged as a fulltime member cause they couldn't afford to keep him. money is everything folks, you dont just get a great drummer you get mike portnoy, who is fuckin brilliant, but you are also paying for the name.
But avenged sevenfold are a way bigger band than dream theater so they must be able to afford him no?

you know what? Why whenever I go onto a drum video of a professional drummer interview or drum recordings etc, theres ALWAYS an arguement on how people think Joey Jordison is "the better drummer in comparison to the one in the video being watched"
Aww really no way!! I never knew till now, Dang that sucks. Dream Theater has been my favorite band for years. I fell in love with them back during the Awake and Images and Words albums. Bummer. I don't know how they will ever sound the same. I love Mike but I am so so sad to hear this news. I hope it doesn't last with Avenged Sevenfold and he returns to DT in a while. Maybe he just needs a break to see what he is actually walking away from. Dream Theater needs you Mike!! Please don't.
Mike and Jimmy are both spectacular drummers. I my self prefer Mike's techniques and in my opinion he is technicaly one of the best drummers and certainly the best prog metal drummer. But Im not gonna swear at either him or any one else. It was his decision and I respect it, and I think others should too. I will miss him in Dream Theater, but what ever he does is by his choice. R.I.P. Jimmy and Good luck Mike

DT fans need to chill out on the anti-Mike statements. I know news of Mike leaving was HUGE. DT is my favorite band and has been for years. However, now that he has made his decision, it's sad to see hardcore DT/former portnoy fans now cutting him down and insulting him. Mike worked his ass off for DT and was a great inspiration on us fans. Just because he made a decision that doesn't sit well with most of us, we can't be hypocrites now and begin to trash talk him.

@Hallowedbethyname92 also i'm pretty sure that miles above is an exageration and i don't think they'd mind me being a fan. your comment proves that you think shredding as fast and as hard as possible is what makes someone good. gates puts tasteful melodies into his solos and fits them into the songs like a puzzle piece. and he shreds too :) sweeping through an arpeggio just doesnt cut it for real musicians

I'm very estecting for whom will replace Mike in Dream Theater live shows. It will be fresh to see a new member on DT. Not that I don't miss Mike, he is a big part of DT, but if he decide to go their way I'm nobody to speak my mind about it.

When I firstly heard about this I really misunderstood this. I blamed MP for leaving DT but now when I know that he will be back in a year or a half I hope that DT will wait for him with making a new album becouse if DT album without MP will suck all people will say it suck becouse MP wasn't there and if it will not suck it could be even worse. Just imagine that.
The Rev was a HUGE Mike Portnoy fan and it was very cool of Portnoy to take his place when he died. Though, it's sad that he had to leave Dream Theater for that. I personally think Avenged Sevenfold should've been the ones who got a new drummer, not Dream Theater and that Portnoy should only be a sub. :\ RIP the Rev

@UltrawareMusicStudio I dunno that I think they will record a different drummer. Maybe just start writing and recording their own respective stuff and he will be back by then. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a bit of a stunt. I beleive he needs a break and they want to move on. But maybe they aren't telling us that they do plan to get back together. So they will start without him, but not leave him behind. He does so much work, he just needed more a break than the rest.

@Thrasherist I'm not saying Dream Theater isn't popular, but less popular than A7x, yes they are. And I'm not saying Dream Theater doesn't have great people....I'm just establishing that A7x does NOT suck. And in their genre, yes lady Gaga and Justin Bieber and Jonas Bro's are much better, but their styles don't even closely relate or overlap with Dream Theater or A7x. With how many people A7x has viewing their songs and videos shows they do NOT suck.

@Dougie666 you can't say that, i mean a7x is a very unique metal band, im not just saying that coz im a fan, is just that they intoduced many new things to metal, and they have a very unique and one of a kind style in the metal genre

I'm a little sad for dream theater and DT's fan. but, if it's a good thing to portoy to change, it's his decision. i say that 'cause i'm not a big fan of DT (i listen a little, and i like it, it's true but my favorite band is still A7X), so i understand that some people are angry...
if one of the member of A7X leave the band and do something else with another band, i will hate this band, it's true... BTW, i love the work portoy did in nightmare!
