    As a guitarist, MP is one of the few drummers whose music I actually listen to to hear the drumming...I rank Mike right up there with Neil Peart.

    As a lifelong fan of DT and Mike Portnoy, I would like to say that personally, I miss MP. When I watched the Testimony 2 Live video - The Neal Morse Band - with Mike at the drum kit, I got chills remembering how special he was with DT. Finally after a couple years without him as the drummer for DT, I can admit I enjoyed his playing more than Mangini (nothing against him), but I do think DT has grown some with Mangini, a sort of new direction. But for my money, the best Dream Theater albums were the first few, and climaxed with Scenes From A Memory. Just my own observation and humble opinion.

      +Vai Fan I agree wholeheartedly with you. Black Clouds was the peak of DT especially the production side of it (which was always credited to Mike) and I've just not been able to get into any of the new stuff with Mangini. He's talented, no doubt, but there's something about the founders of bands leaving that is transparent in the sounds and over all feel.

    Just noticed that Part 1 of this interview has more than three times the views than Part 2.
    Goes to show you how society is content on hearing small pieces or doses of stories and not at all interested in the whole picture. Of course viewers probably didn't have the patience to listen to the whole thing, they probably didn't even listen to all of Part 1, but if you're a DT fan, you really should listen to the whole thing. Great interview Eddie - still think MIke Mangini has done a great job.

    I agree with Portnoy. A break probably do them good. Everyone gets some rest and with 4 years of song ideas to mix into one album, you get much better potential of a killer album. It's just one of those things. Hopefully they will reunite someday.

  • @TheRealWillGeronimo

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not angry at Mike, I'm more angry at DT because they didn't want to respect the wishes of their leader/best friend. It's like anything else, you get burned out with a vicious cycle of touring and recording. especially if it's been the same for 20+ years. I will always support Mike because he didn't do anything wrong. As for DT, Im pissed at everyone except for Jordan. But anything Mike does I will purchase as for DT not so much. Take care.

    I'm actually really glad he made this decision in retrospect, he was right. Dream Theater's music hasn't lived up to their earlier stuff and really hasn't been the same since Portnoy left which is not a knock on Mangini who's an amazing drummer. On the flip side, the stuff he and Neal have put out over the last 10 years together have been some of the finest prog of the decade so all things considered, I'll take the content from Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band and Flying Colors over what probably would have been a newer fresher Dream Theater sound if they had taken a break.

    It's interesting that since leaving ha had only positive messages from JP and JR... isn't that wierd? I think he might have had some personal issues with Labrie and maby with Myung. This theory might be confirmed by the fact that quite recently Labrie said that he doesn't regret Mike leaving and he canno't see him coming back to band... I mean really James?

    • @liheng89
      @liheng89 Před 10 lety +10

      Mike and James most likely had some issues when he was still in the band, it was more apparent after he left when James stated in an interview that there is no longer someone hogging the spotlight and that he (James) is now the undisputed frontman of DT. There is another interview where he mentions Petrucci, Myung and even Kevin Moore being huge contributors to DT's early days but does not mention Mike (almost on purpose), so there's definitely some kind of rift between the two. Not sure about MP and JM though, it's hard to know what JM is thinking at any given time lol. Anyway, I hope they resolve their issues, they have been bandmates for 20+ years.

    DT wanted an album now, Mike wanted a couple years... there was room for compromise. But I can understand being tired of the same songs, cooped up with the same guys that you hardly talk to anymore... a break would have been great for DT and I wish they'd done it. But the band realizes there's a shelf life... even with their skills they're near the age when things deteriorate, and JLB will be the first to go. I can see their urgency, though I wish they'd had a few more meetings before deciding.

    I hate it when original members leave. The bands never quite recover and no matter how hard they try to mimic it the sound is never the same. It's still awkward seeing Trujillo in MetallicA. I discovered Evile late and loved their lead guitarist only to find out he quit. No need to even discuss GnR without Slash.
    I guess the only exception is Van Halen since they had a pretty successful era with Hagar, and I actually prefer Hagar over Roth.

      I kinda feel the same way. Mike seems to have an intuition with band dynamics that's almost superhuman. Plus, if one of the founding members of something who is also a crucial part of its operation expresses the desire to take a break, don't you owe it to them to at least consider it? From what I understand they were all like "no we ain't stopping, not negotiable. Get your ass in the studio or we'll find someone else". Well, they paid a heavy price.

    i love d.t. just as much as ever. yes i think you can hear the difference but i think thats because mangini brings new elements. these elements i think allow the band to do things in a more supportive way, or open minded way. not saying m.p. was a control freak but i do question why such a difference in what they produce now and all i come up with is that d.t. perhaps has been wanting to do more of what they have done with mangini. but not many bands could lose a drummer of m.p.'s level and come back with a grammy nomination. that speaks volume of the band as a whole, not a individual. but because the talent level runs so deep and music mastery is a must to be in d.t., the band has proven they can prevail when a member leaves for whatever reason. james isn't the original singer, jordan isn't the original keyboardist, mangini isn't the original drummer. this is the john's band and the fact they have endured and grew their fan base nonetheless, again, speaks volume of just what it means to be in dream theater. i mean mangini cried when he earned the right to join the band!

  • @jlarsena
    @jlarsena Před 10 lety +3

    It's a very weird breakup. I would like to know what would happen if a member would have a substance abuse problem and they would need to go to rehab? I know that's not what happened, but when a band member needs a break, they need a break. Imagine if James Hetfield didn't take a break and detox? But I don't agree bands that take breaks come back with better music. St Anger was Metalllica's worst album, right? Some bands take a break and that's the end of them.

    @kswiridow I don't think so. Petrucci would have fired LaBrie if he had to. Plus to find a good metal singer is quite easy right now. The problem was not recording another DT album from January '11 either. IMHO, the problem was the very demanding touring schedule that comes after the release of a new album. MP is obviously tired with very long touring.

    I honestly think there's more to the story that they won't obviously tell us.

      Of course there is, but since they're not telling us and people close to the band aren't.. we can but wonder! :).

      I wouldn't be surprised if Portnoy said "it's either Labrie or me" and they chose Labrie. And then to save face, they agreed not to disclose that part.

    @awesomeretardedvids I honestly think it will be ok. Mike might be a founding member, and an abslutely amazing drummer, but there's a lot of talented drummers out there, maybe even some unknowns waiting for their big break. If you look at the keyboard history, going from Moore to Sherinian to Ruddess was fine, and produced some great albums from each. So I'm sad but also excited to see and hear a change. I won't lie, I was never a fan of Mike's guttural singing, so I won't miss that. Prog on!

    Rush took a five year break albeit due to unfortunate circumstances, and they came back bigger than ever. I think the other guys were shortsighted on this and it's too bad, too bad for DT and fans. But Portnoy will survive.

    Rather a new beginning for Dream Theater. Haven't you heard how MP has been controlling the ship, in some really wrong ways? The band will now feel free to add their will to the music, which I believe will bring the music to a really cool new level. It's not like the other guys don't know music or can't write music. They're all geniouses. Portnoy recently tried to rejoin, and I'm glad Dream Theater gave him the cold hand. And with that, I'm a big fan of Portnoy and his play

    Imo, i support Mike. He got every right as a person, husband, father and drummer to take a break. DT will and always be band i enjoy listening to. But leaving away from family can be easy for some and hard for others too. Money and fame cant buy that precious time.
    Id thought DT could have at least give him some time out. At least i know after 12 to 15 years of studios,promos, world tours, clinics, interview and other music related convention, i def need some time out. Its disappointing for that a decade plus long he commits to it all.
    Eventually wanting to take a break, he got the knife. I think thats not right. Mike Mangini is a real solid drummer. But DT i feel could only be DT with Portnoy.
    Take a look at Korn(i know they come close to DT in terms of musicality). But when Head decides to rejoin, they accept it with open arms. I mean Head and Korn belongs to each other.

    @BassGloS Thats seriously insulting.. let the man work, he doesn't need to be told he's wrong, i have no idea why you think you know what is right for him when you have probably never even met him. He knows what he's doing. I just ask that you don't insult him by telling him what to do when only he knows.

    God will you all shut up about him leaving. It was a decision he thought long and hard about, and it was what he wanted and needed. You need to accept that. And you call yourself "fans"

    A band is very much like a marriage and just the same as a marriage if you feel after 25 years you need a break, it's over, you're obviously not satisfied. The other band members are happily married to it and even after all this time want to continue. Why take a break if you're happy, right? Mike was just tired of fucking them. Now he's blaming them and didn't he file a suit against them for using the name or some sad shit like that?

    Its the same thing if Steve Harris quit Iron Maiden to play in Slipknot. What a shame, but its his choice and life must go on. So get out and give some other drummer the chance to do history. Did Ozzy ended when Randy died?? NO, and introduced to us 2 awesome new guitar players, so lets be optimist and support the other Dream theater members...

    So, he wants the world to stop for 'x' amount of years while he does his thing? This isn't Genesis. I can't stand Dream Theatre's music, but they have a right to make a living. He wasn't thinking of the band, he was thinking of himself. This guy is his own biggest fan. However, the band was right if they wanted to start an album. Maybe now w/ Mangini, they'll actually be good.
