I remember the hours we put into transcribing these tunes off cassette! No internet! - Well we had time back then. What a blessing to have this documented!
Yeah Phil.. no CZcams back then to see two people played stuff lol... but I couldn't be more blessed than to have begun my career growing and learning and pushing with you... was a blast! xx
Holy $hip!!!! These tunes were basically new in 1995! AMAZING!!! I knew Virgil would be killing it but the whole band is just exceptional. The singer ALWAYS ruins these kind of covers but this gentleman is nailing it AND not sounding like a clone. Bravo Gentleman!!!!!
This is savage. Awake was only released in late 1994, and these hunks were doing these covers in 1995? Simon’s guitar tone is insane, and his chops are maxed out. What a gift of a video. The whole band went all in! These studs took no prisoners.
woooowwww THIS IS INSANE. This guys took less than 1 year to take out full "awake" record and played it live in perfection. In lots of moments i prefer this act than the real DT live act. Virgil we all know that is a beast, and world famous, but all the other musicians from the band deserve huge congratulations. Guitar is awsome, nailed in all things, sound, technique, feeling, etc Bass players, i can listen him more on this video than John on the record. Keyboard was great, emulate the sounds, and Vocals to me are more nice than James Labrie, more rock, more groovy, more bass. Took more than 30 years to listen the diamond. CONGRATULATION
YES, THE SINGER!!!!!!!! I have googled Andrew Grant and all I find is a duo called Breathe.......Mr. Hosford (OR ANYONE HERE), will you please update us on the career of this incredible singer? Kudos, of course, to the impeccable musicianship and fabulous performance of the entire band.........
Sadly, Andrew hasn't sung in over 20 years, he retired his singing career. Which makes the world a slightly worse place in my opinion. but his singing on this was INCREDIBLE, and I was very lucky to do so many shows with him back then 🤘
@@SimonHosford It is a shame, I remember seeing Grant sing in some duo acts around Knox City back in the day. I went from watching Theatre of Dreams to him singing that and I was like yup.. nailin' it.. he really was a truly exceptional singer. I saw you guys first and then I purchased the albums and I was like umm.. why does the cover band sound better than the original band. Hahaha. But realistically all of you were and are still amazingly exceptional musicians. Been following you ever since, and when you guys did OTV minus Grant it was like my own personal more fusion version of DT until Virgil did Planet X.. Haha
Came for a few minutes to see what it was about, stayed for the whole video start to end, amazing. Truly incredible how dedicated you all were to pull off a show like this. Not to say singer is nothing short of amazing 👌.
Absolutely amazing. I've been a Dream Theater fan for 40 years and this is the best rendition of them I've ever heard. Having taught myself to play drums back in the 70s to bands like Kiss, Aerosmith, Journey, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rush, etc I can say, without a doubt, that Virgil Donati is one of the greatest drummers to ever grace a kit. The man is not of this world. These guys are great from top to bottom. Wow!!!
Thank you SO much! I think Donati mentioned his DT cover band during his audition for Dream Theater, and I’ve been looking for any footage of it on CZcams for like 7 years! It sounds incredible!
Virgil is a beast, he has done amazing work in jazz too over the years, probably he was overqualified for DT :p props to every band member, briiliant musicians and a very fun show
I was waiting a few songs to comment so I knew I was not tripping... what an incredible Vocalist this guy... he's got a kind of Chris Cornell quality to his voice, powerful pipes
Man I remember this so well. Pretty sure it was on a Monday night each time? Great players and great days. Virgil's a monster but a 12 min drum solo is stretching the friendship 😅
I remember seeing you guys !!! That’s the 1st time I heard Andrew’s vocals and thought omg where did this guy come from??? Thanks for the memories of a great past before the government took away the pubs and rock bands 7 days aweek in Melbourne!!
Just watching Lie. The first solo and Virgil’s drum intro before the legato run gave me chills. Had to stop my gym workout to pay it respect. Now watching the final Lie solo, Simon is an animal. An absolute mutant of a man.
What a great find Simon! So lovely to travel back in time and relive the passion, friendship and exhilarating experiences that we all shared. A definite highlight in our musical journeys I am sure. Big thanks to all of you guys, Virgil, Phil, Simon and all the extraordinary musicians that inspired this group…a true blessing! 🙏
Awwww hello legend!!! :) They were great days indeed, and it was always a pleasure playing with you sir, as daunting as it was as a young guy intimidated by your musicianship. Love you brother! ❤
This is a total treasure man, what a live recording! It feels the great vibe between the band and the musical awareness about what you'r playing, and your guitar man, AMAZING!!! And i really believe this singer tone sounds perfect... Thanks Simon for share this great memories with us, regards from Chile in the south of the world.
Simon and Turcio and Evripidou were on On the Virg - Serious Young Insects too, which is a phenomenal album. Virgil mentioned that he was "in a Dream Theater cover band" in his audition with them, but I didn't realize everyone in it was this good. Cool to see this!
I’ve been a DT fan for over 25 years. This cover is phenomenal. I can’t believe you recreated all those signature DT guitar sounds on a Fender Stratocaster.. unbelievable!!
I was on the Ytsejam mailing list (remember that OG DT fans??) back in the 90s, that's where I remember hearing about Theatre of Dreams, but I never actually got to see or hear them, till now. It certainly wasn't cool to like prog metal in NZ in those days (and arguably still isn't) - good to see Aussies know how to rock smarter. Thanks for the upload Simon! I've let the 3 other DT fans in NZ know...
Haha yeah I got so much shit from local musicians for loving DT in the 90s, I ended up losing interest in them in the mid 00s and look at them now.. Hahaha.. The irony
I am in awe at how you managed to do these covers with your own touch while remaining so faithful to the original material in 1995... Unbelievable work!
You guys killed it! I was in a DT tribute band in 1998 called Pitchblende and we came close but not THIS close. Each of you is fantastic but your singer in particular is incredible. Great work!
I was at this gig…. I’ve raved about it for years, so so SO rapt this has finally emerged .. the OTV gig was amazing also! Great times, great venue and amazing memories. Thanks Hoss 🙏🏻
Hehe, the Under a glass moon solo is a special thing, not that many players can play it live accurately. But despite that, really great work! Especially given the fact that this was 1995!
Hi Robert :) Yeah, I made the decision to have just one or two moments in the show where I wasn't playing John's licks note for note, so I could play my own licks. Not everyone will like that of course, but there was only 2 moments in the show where I did that. this show was a short one, but we used to do whole 2 hour DT shows too, and I think they were still the only two moments in the whole 2 hours that I didn't play his licks not for note. thanks for the kind words brother, glad you enjoyed it :)
que concierto más guapo! pero vaya joya! no sabia que esto llegó a existir. mil gracias! Virgil es un monstruo y la banda es espectacular!! increible!!
I wasn’t expecting to watch it all, but I enjoyed it so much that it was inevitable 😅 I loved your interpretation, the vibe, the song list and even the fact that it is in VHS quality. Perfect!
If only Virgil had been given the DT job (which was already pre decided) he would have taken them to the next level. I struggle to listen to any of their material since Portnoy left. Even then, their later albums with Portnoy were pretty bad. Images and words and awake will always be the pinnacle of their work.
I was probably there, I saw OTV a bunch of times at the old Grainstore, and then even more times at the Evelyn, including the TOD shows. The memories!!!
Legendary stuff guys!!!! I was just a supermarket trolley boy when you played this gig & only now after being a Dreamtheater fan for 2 years do I realise what I missed back in 95. Dammit! I could’ve been there. I was only 11 years old.

God knows that if Dream Theater would haved pick Virgil instead of Mangini, they would have been so powerful that we wouldn't been able to endure.

I saw the Awake tour live in Europe and I can vouch this was a remarkable tribute.
