Fair Warning is a little 'jamming band' that Gerry (the drummer) and I formed put together back in 1997 in Melbourne Australia, for no other reason than to have fun and keep our chops up by playing Van Halen songs with our good pals, as we all toured in Tommy Emmanuel’s band at the time.
We jammed every few weeks or so, for about a year, but we never intended to go out and play shows back then, so we didn't... it was just something special for us, and brought us closer to the music of Van Halen. We did get asked back in 1997 to play the Frankston Guitar Show, so that ended up being the one and only gig we ever did... over 25 years ago! lol.. and we stopped jamming after that show, as all of us went on to tour with different artists, and in different circles etc...
...Fast Forward to 2017, as the 40th Anniversary of the debut Van Halen record approached, I thought it would be a novel celebration to re-ignite 'Fair Warning' with Gerry, and find a singer (no easy task to find someone who can even be close to 'Diamond Dave' in ANY city in the world) and a bass player who could throw down that all important bottom line, and also sing those harmonies. enter Eugene Hamilton, and Jason Vorherr (respectively).
I spoke to Rob Walker and Greg Phillips, who do an amazing job putting together the Melbourne Guitar Show, and we tried to make it happen, but alas, the schedules of everyone did not align on the 'actual' 40th Anniversary. But thank you for their patience with us, because the planets DID align for us to headline the Saturday of the following year - August 3rd 2019 - which we thought would be acceptably close to the anniversary (well, it’s a whole year off, but we just wanted to do it!.....so any excuse, right? lol)
The concept was simple: as a proper ‘homage’ to the album - to play it from start to finish, like a live show version of listening to the record (although a show with no soundcheck as it turned out, because a freak power issue took out the P.A. system earlier in the day - hence the constant onstage gesturing to sound crew out the front lol)
..so what you see here is our VERY FIRST PERFORMANCE together, with only a handful of rehearsals leading up to it. So while not perfect by any means, we hope we at least captured a little VH magic on the day. I guess you'll be the judge of that.
We played this show with nothing but full respect to Edward, Alex, Dave, Mike, Wolf, Valerie and everyone in the whole extended Van Halen family, because those guys are our hero's and changed our musical journey, and we are forever grateful.
We tried to play it ‘true’ musically, but more than that - we tried to feel onstage, while playing, the way we felt when we all first heard this music... and playing this stuff, you just can’t wipe the smile off your damn face!...because when I was 12 years old, it was Edward that taught me that it was ok to smile when you played your instrument; it was Edward that showed me that it was ok to look like you’re having as much fun as you are; and it was Edward that confirmed for me as I entered my teens, that music is an expression of joy.
RIP Eddie - you changed the world while you were here, because you changed all of us in it.... The world knows that you wrote a lot of great music, and that your guitar playing was completely unique and innovative... but I like to think it is ‘WE’ - the people that you touched and changed for generations to come - that are your greatest composition, and your grandest accomplishment.
Humbly,
Simon Hosford
Gerry Pantazis
Jason Vorherr

If you dare to play a EVH striped guitar on stage, you’d better be fucking good.....I think you’d all agree this guy falls into that category 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You nailed it on the head Buddy. That's not your run 'o the mill Van Halen wannabe. LOL that was badass and enjoyable.
Yes, he definitely earned the right, lol.
He fucked nailed every EVH lick👌
Absofuckinglutely!!!🤘
@@KMAN8599 Really close, sounded great. A lot of little things were different, but that’s probably about as close as someone can get-and playing at live! Awesome!🤘🏻🎸🔥😝🇺🇸
Best VH guitar sound I’ve ever heard from someone who isn’t Eddie. Unreal.
I guess you never listen to Al Estrada.. David Lee's guitar player . He is the closest you ever get to Eddie again..
@@robertsmith-ux8ls I’ll have to check him out
😮 100% agree! Dude has the tone and the technique of EVH down. Bravo bro!!
This guys good!
...although it sounds like a modeler.
Never seen anyone sound as close to Eddie as this.....let alone playing LIVE! Truly unreal talent! Not a single note wrong!
Never seen anyone so close to Elvis too
Punch in this kid JACOB DERAPS on CZcams.he’s like 19 yo from Canada.this kid has Eddie’s tone dialed in pretty well he even has a variack or whatever Ed used.check him out
Kid is super talented
Holy Shit ! This guitar player is INCREDIBLE !!!! I never heard of him before. I'm gonna need some time to process what i just saw. And once again,... HOLY SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
100% agree! Never heard of him but my Lord! I truly don't think it can be played any better, I was in awe the entire time!
Been playing EVH for 30 years. This guitarist is by far the Best note for note, feeling and nuance of Eddie sound I've ever heard or seen! Period!
Has to the best Eddie Van Halen guitar playing I’ve heard
This is probably the most love I've seen put into a VH tribute.
That guitar player is amazing, note for note and the tone sounded very close to the actual record.
the guitar player is Unbelievable
The Brown Sound is dead on
Bass player too
Professional muso. Player in a racer x a dream theater tribute band, he can play
Simon is not from this world. This is live folks. My mind is beyond blown.
That guitar tone is perfect.
i could swear at times the guitarist is simply guitar-synching with Eddie. the quality...the attention to detail...the tone. truly great work.
I don't have enough superlatives to praise this group. Man, that singer was Diamond Dave, and the guitarist could play Eddie like nobody else I've ever heard. What a great show!
The precision bass is talking loud 😎🤘🏽
Never diamond. Just look at this guy still good though!
I had no idea the guy from U2 could shred like that...well done, Edgey Van Halen!
And Elvis Lee Roth on vocals !
😂😂😂
Ha!!! Well said
Ha!!!!!!
Such a great comment and the Elvis one too.. I'm sure the Aussies intentionally messed with this ...great work boys
Simon knows his EVH...he plays it perfectly 👌....if you closed your eyes, you would think it was Eddie 😉
This guitarist gets it ! Unreal how close he is !
He is a natural !
Simon hosford. Played in many bands including a dream theater tribute. Professional musician and musical director on Australian TV
For those too young or not even born then, when this album came out it was like hearing aliens from the future. It changed rock music instantly, and forever. Pandora's box was opened.
I was 18....and you're absolutely right. Couldn't wait for each new album, wondering what Eddie would do next.
Best VH Tribute Band i've seen. The guitarist is dead on
totally agree...then guitarist is indeed dead on
Absolutely.. guitarist is nailing all those riffs and solos...whole band rocks their butts off
Absolutely! The whole band is dead-on great!
Agreed
That's the best Eddie tone I've ever heard... this is insane.
Yup, digital amp modeling technology...the shit. Run in stereo right thru PA...and the musicians in the audience will say "holy shite!" 😳 (if you can execute😅)
Damn. These guys are the nuts. The best sounding VH cover band to date. The guitarist nailed Eddie's playing to the T.
This guy Simon is about as close to Eddie as I’ve ever heard, and I’ve listened to a lot of covers. His rig is set up perfectly. That’s so damned close to Ed’s Brown Sound. And technically....I’m freaking impressed.
Really great band. Bravo, guys! And this audience should be ashamed.
Kemper profile
Thank you sir. I'm guessing you're a Dream Theater fan? I actually played in a Dream Theater tribute show with Virgil Donati in the mid 90's (we called ourselves Theater Of Dreams lol). When Mike Portnoy came down to Melbourne in 1996, he had us do a whole Dream Theater show with him and we headlined the Australian Ultimate Drummers Weekend festival. Was great fun!
@@SimonHosford DT fan I am... have played DT Tribute as well... looking forward to such beautiful Van halen Tribute gigs.. would Love to see you play For Unlawful Carnal knowledge Tribute and Balance Tribute, that where Eddie shined like a star.
@@MoeedKazi Thank you Moeed! It seems like we might have some more work to do then ;)
He’s using a Kemper profile. A very high powerful processor that can rip the sound from a recorded album and sound identical
I am a long time VH cover connoisseur and this has taken the top spot as most accurate, swingy and joyful playing of EVH's masterpiece. Loved every minute.
That Eruption replica was so perfect that I was going to call Lip Sync. I've been playing hair guitar since I was 15 in 1985. The tone and clarity was PERFECT. I'm 54 yrs old and I've been playing 35+ yrs. Can you imagine how many times I've heard that piece? Lots. Well done, sir.
I couldn't agree more. Pete Thorn has a great version, Dweezil Zappa plays it incredible close to the album, but this right here....(BTW, I'm also your age but started at 21) I believe is about as good as it's ever gonna get. Down to every single nuaince.....and played LIVE!
trust your gut on that
It's like watching Van Halen but with the singer hitting the notes
Not even do you got a clue fool
1970s Elvis
Lol. You know that’s how great and unique they were during the 80 Invasion and the Mean Streets tours. Mean Street tour by far was the most exciting show I’ve ever seen in 40 years. So after a half of bottle of Jack if he was flat or sharp nobody gave a rats ass and overall the experience was far more special then any other trend setting gig. We’ll not really trend setting because NOBODY could take it that high.
And he's not completely drunk and jacked up on coke!
Dudes are straight up legit .
Hands down...... the finest recreation of Edward's playing...pick attack....phrasing.....and intent. You got ur MOJO working
Not only does he sound like Eddie, but he is smiling the whole time like Eddie...totally enjoying every minute
So good! The tone of the guitar is an amazing duplication of EVH. If only DLR was still as good as this band’s singer!
Watching this guy sing gives this 56 year old hope that he could still front a rock band. This band kicks ass..😊
At 52, I keep telling people if my engineering career doesn't pan out, there's always a VH cover group in need of an ax player.
Rock on dude!56 is YOUNG! I'm a guitarist... I'll never stop!
56 isnt that old tbh. if you've lived a healthy lifestyle away from all the stress and drugs that these rockstars go through, im sure you could do well! just dont expect to be reaching very high notes with your voice lol
Eddie was ALL about tone. To get that Eddie sound like this live is a perfect tribute, I'm sure if he saw this he'd be flattered and impressed. You capture the essence of every track, flawlessly. Superb!
Proper tone
Use of phaser
Flange
And yes it's all in the fingers when I got it u got it!
The dedication to Eddie's tone and technique is second to none. And I really appreciate everything the other musicians brought to the table as well. Incredible, made my night...
the tone almost sounds like he's guitar-synching it's so spot on
You guys are too sweet. But thank you so much :)
Agreed
This guys technique on guitar and especially the tone captures EVH on the first album for sure. outstanding!
Closest VH1 guitar tone i ever heard
Well, this is the best cover of Van Halen that we will ever see in our lifetimes.
Indeed!!!
Flawless
Very impressive, both vocally and instrumentally. This is about as close as you could ever ask. I was 16 in 1978 when my friend next door called me up and said, "I got that Van Halen record, you better get over here right away". Like everybody else, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Didn't seem like the audience cared about this amazing sounding VH tribute.
Absolutely nailed Eddie's "brown sound" tone!
"when I was 12 years old, it was Edward that taught me that it was ok to smile when you played your instrument; it was Edward that showed me that it was ok to look like you’re having as much fun as you are; and it was Edward that confirmed for me as I entered my teens, that music is an expression of joy." Absolutely.
Great job guys!!
Not taking anything away from the other members, but, that **Guitar Player** is "SPOT ON" I mean, PERFECT!!! NOTE to NOTE PERFECT!!
This guy is to EVH what Randy Hansen is to Hendrix. This is so accurate it’s almost unnerving.
I stopped comparing them to VH a few minutes into it and just enjoyed it. They owned these tunes! The whole band nailed it.
I would say even compared to the recordings these guys hold up extremely well. They’re truly amazing.
What the hell did I stumble on. This is proof that music is the glue that binds us all. The bass player even got the Michael Anthony lick right (18:50) on Jamie’s Cryin
it’s like watching a van halen show but with the singer singing all the lyrics instead of half
Absolutely NAILING Eddie's tone & licks there; excellent job.
The best Van Halen cover band. After listening to the whole set I was like......somebody get me a doctor 🎸
Guitarist is scary good. Great sound and tribute
Who knew that The Edge could nail EVH riffs!!
hehe.. not even me 🤘
LOL!!! good one!!
Umm, I think you're referring to David Evans.
No way the audience can be sleeping like that the way this sounded.
As a guitarist whose life was changed by hearing Eddie when this album first came out, I have to say that this is the BEST rendition of his playing and sound that I have EVER heard! 💯🥇💯 It is not a robotic carbon copy of notes played, but a true appreciation of the nuances that made Eddie's playing and tone so special. Every other guitarist I have heard try to play like him, always impart some "foreign" element of their own playing style that throws me off. Here...even when not played note for note, the "spirit" of Eddie's approach comes through so clearly it is incredible! Hearing the solo in Ice Cream Man played so perfectly gave me goosebumps! 🤦♂️ The whole band did an amazing job as well, and truly did this album justice. Thank you so much for this Simon!🙏🙏🙏
*Jesus H. Christ --- you damn Aussies did a great tribute to the Mighty VH --- Eddie is up in heaven SMILING on this one, fellas!*
Thanks Fred.
I usually dont like tribute shows but this was fkin off the charts. Everyone nailed it. I am blown away guys, great job. That guitar tone is perfect and the band captured the spirit perfectly.
@reality smith stfu
@reality smith this is a cover band and why do you think the solo is fake
@reality smith If you read the description of the video, you'll know that we only put this line up and show together for the 40th Anniversary of the release of Van Halen 1. It's the only show we've ever done. So no, we obviously don't write originals for this band. And I would love to know what about the solo you think is fake?? I suppose I should take it as a massive compliment :)
@@SimonHosford y’all are great btw
@@jantzenallen3077 Thank you Jantzen :)
I love the way Simon plays EVH, very accurate and his palm muting along with his tone are incredible. Their back up vocals are spot on which in my opinion are probably the hardest part of a VH Tribute project but they do it very well.
WOW!! this guitarist is incredible. tone nailed. guitar playing nailed. sound nailed.
I've never heard a Van Halen cover band sound this good. The guitarist is an ace, as is the singer.
Agreed.
That lead guitarist ! FN killed it! Very impressive. The rest of the band as well. That was cool :)
Absolutely unbelievable! Not only is everyone on point....the mix is phenomenal! Kudos to you mates! If you're ever here in the states Please let me know! I wouldn't miss it!
I actually thing the vocalist is an underrated part of this act. He's subtle, doesn't try to straight out impersonate Diamond Dave, and has his own moves and persona. I dig it. This is almost like an alternate universe version of Van Halen where they never stopped the 80's material.
Thank you so much for that comment :) Yeah, our singer Dave is not trying to imitate Roth (no one can haha).. he's just doing his own thing.. thanks for the lovely words :)
All you have to do is listen to I'm The One. Nailed it...
thats a true statement! They nailed it.... :)
The sad part is the crowd don't look so entertained... what a lame audience.
@@Rnrf5150 haha, no kidding. When mixing they should have added a bit more excitement to the crowd. :)
unfriggingbelievable, I did not think it was possible to replicate the EVH sound so perfectly. I also forgot how incredible that album was. Not a single weak song on the entire thing. Thank you for this.
Guitarists has Eddie's Van Halens sound down to a tee 💯🤘🤘
Guitar player is ON FIRE.....where's the love for the bassist? He's super tight as well and delivering great backup vox !!!
Brilliant playing. A fitting tribute to Eddie.
Guitar is right on the money
The guitar player is just awesome-amazing-fantastic-over the top-etc....You are the man Simon!
this is the most accurate ive seen a band play this album! mix and performance , playing and the vocals and guitars are just TOP NOTCH !!! man the licks , everything is spot on !!!!! TOUR This set ! Please !
stellar performance. Great guitar player.
In keeping with the real Van Halen vibe , bassist is hugely overlooked and a solid foundation. Just like Michael Anthony.
Eddie's tone perfect
Everyone is about as spot-on as possible with their part!
This show was actually just put together as a special 'one-off' for the 40th Anniversary of the albums release, so it is the first and only show we have ever played. We didn't even know the show was going to be recorded until we arrived for soundcheck that day lol. There is a more detailed description if you go to the top and click "Show More".
Simon, this is incredible, such a great tribute! So good you guys are spot on! Better than I ever heard before! I grew up with VH and covered many of their songs, I know how hard it is to cover like you guys did! I really enjoyed it! Fantastic Job! Congrats! I know EVH is looking down with that one and only smile that he has! And by the way, I love the way you all are smiling and playing the music that is so much fun to listen to and perform!
Simon you are seriously incredible. Thanks for putting all of the time in to do this so well.
@@Tommyd042 Thank you Tommy, your words are really touching. And yes, as you can see, we were like kids in a candy store trying to replicate that amazing music. S
@@msorte You're welcome Mark, thank you for the lovely message. S
Simon you are fucking scary good. Holy shit.. Credit where due man you're playing is like tracks stripped off the records unbelievable..
Wow! Even got that brown sound. Great band!!!!
VH1 changed my life. This band NAILED it. Well done!
I'm not seeing many banging their heads but boy I would be.. absolutely amazing gig
Performed at a guitar show. All guitar players in the audience. Not necessarily VH fans.
The singer is amazing!A lot of people can copy Eddie but not David Lee Roth. This dude is incredible!
Best Eddie sounds and tone I've heard.....
yess
Absolutely blown away by all of you guys, great performance
This guys sound waaay better than the average full time tribute band!
I rarely get chills from a guitar player anymore but this guy is killer!
Absolutely stunning - I've genuinely never seen a band nail an entire set like that live - you gents are next level. I'm just off to burn my guitar in shame.... 😂😳
That guitar tone is spot on!
A couple of trolls criticizing these guys because its a tribute lineup; "wannabe's" or words to that effect. I think the same every time I hear a Philharmonic Orchestra "cover" Beethoven's 3rd. ;-). Morons. This performance is simply incredible. Well done gentleman.
Guitar tone is perfect. Sublime. Deliciously brown.
Seem alot of VH tribute bands that look the part but never sounded the part. This guitarist has the Brown Sound nailed 👍
Best Eddie cover Ive heard.
not only playing all Eddie's songs note 4 note but also the perfect tone
Best cover I've ever heard of Atomic Punk. Vocals included.
The guitar tone is dead on!
I like the singer too! This lineup is fucking sweet!
One of the most accurate covers of eruption out there!!! The whole performance is spot on
This dude cops Eddie the best I’ve seen. He has Eddies timing & flow down simply amazing!🤘
My jaw has been dropped in utter amazement at how incredible this is to watch! Hearing it is just like the album! Awesome!
Great Band!! Guitar sound is great, singer, bass, and drums all excellent.
Saw VH for he fist time in '79, & several ore times after. Plus, a million bar bands, some good, some not, cover a million tunes. These guys are FANTASTIC! Some of the best renditions of these classics songs I've ever heard! Cheers from NYC, USA!
Aww thanks brother. Greetings from Melbourne Australia 🤟🙏
Brilliant Guitarist.... 👏👏👏👏
Like everyone else commenting, this is amazing! One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is what a great job the sound company and recording crew did! Bravo!
Eddie van Halen would be proud 💯🤘🤘🤘
Fucking fabulous! That guitar tone gave me the chills...
I'm utterly speechless. He nailed the guitar tone and skill!
Anyone can learn how do play this exact material but remember Ed was 23 when this cam out. I can't even comprehend the amount of time and natural talent to have written that, and all future music for VH. Pretty incredible for a "kid"
Eric you are TOTALLY right brother! It's one thing to just be able to imitate Ed after playing guitar for 40 years.. but Ed INVENTED this shit when he was a teenager!!! My head explodes too. What a genius. But thank you for your kind words. S
@@SimonHosford Agreed on all points except emulating Edward's playing. I was fortunate enough to see him play live numerous times over his career. I've seen and heard a few handfuls of imitators over 35 years. Very very good clones. None channeled his happy spirit in ferocity and attack until watching you. First of all, thank you for not wearing a wig and chain smoking cigarettes for effect lol.
Your stoke for the music translates through in the details and nuances so often missed by skilled players. Its likely because they are so concerned about executing instead of throwing caution to the wind and fully having fun and enjoying the experience. Its a work mentality versus a love in what you're doing in the moment. Clearly you loved Ed and his music. That deep respect allowed you to channel that one of a kind flying guitar spirit only EVH had in the 70s. He redefined everything and it will never happen again.
Now, how did you nail THE TONE better than anybody else on planet earth? 😂😂😂
@@rogerdat7807 Awww Roger you are too kind. The heart of the tone is actually coming from the Kemper, and I'm using profiles from a pack called 'The Brown Sound" that a very talented lad called TopJimi made. S
Yep and even better is Jason Becker writing perpetual burn album at only 19. Best guitar instrumental album I ever heard.
@@joshmuz9018 You're right Josh, that album is incredible!
Holy shit these guys are good. Wow. Everyone one of them are amazing musicians. These guys should tour the fucking planet.
Not a weak link in this group. Amazing !!!!
Wow, this guitarist can really play Eddie's lines and CLEAN! Great!👍
