- Images and Words: Live in Tokyo is the first home video release from American progressive metal band Dream Theater. It contains most of the band's performance from their August 26, 1993 show at Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo, Japan.
I edited the original video so the songs are one after another.
(Originally on the dvd there's footage from the tour and official videos of some songs)

Under a Glass Moon
Wait for Sleep
Surrounded
The Ytse Jam
(with drum solo)
The Mirror
(Puppies on Acid)
Take the Time
To Live Forever
A Fortune in Lies
Another Day
Pull Me Under - Hudba
Back when john myung was a GIF, now he's a JPG.
Wut

I dont get it
Richard Dortch back then, john myung was still moving around the stage while performing... it represents "gif" as moving images... but now he's like frozen on the stage and doesn't move whatsoever... and it represents "jpg" images
I came to hear the old Labrie... stayed for Kevin Moore.

Voice of a golden god Labrie.

I knew the description had the order wrong. When they played A fortune in lies, I was like, "wait did they play Take the Time and The mirror already? I can't recall it" And started heavily doubting my memory and reality. But then I saw your comment I realized I wasn't going crazy, lmao.

Labrie will forever have my respect. He has been through the ringer of vocal issues. Imagine being able to sing like this and lose that ability because of SHELLFISH. you would atleast fall into deep depression if not quit singing entirely. Instead of quitting, he has persevered and been the front man of this band, bringing us amazing performances to this day. the frustration of not sounding the way you used to, and distain from fans who want him booted and cant appreciate what he is for the band would defeat most people. My favorite vocalist of all time and my role model.
Couldn’t agree more. That must be a hellish thing to cope with and he’s done it inspiringly.
Damn I didn't even know about that.
@@dinospumoni5611 Didn't know Dino was a DT fan. I guess you learn something new every day.
What happened to james?
@@salvatoremarchese5459 He was vacationing in Cuba with his wife in 1994 and he ate some bad shellfish which made him vomit so violently that he ruptured his vocal cords. His voice was seriously screwed up after that. Doctors told him to take a year long break, but he ignored them, because the "Waking up the World" tour was in 7 days.

Young Portnoy looks just like his son!
When Petrucci and Portnoy still didn’t know about hamburgers
Well Myung body still skinny till now
Pretty sure they knew about hamburgers back then. Metabolisms are a bitch.
I think it's more being under 30 years old.
Better: when they still don't know about rehab...
danilo modiE he has never opened his mouth so hard to get fat
Petrucci + Ibanez + Kevin Moore was the real deal to me
Its just such a magical combination, Kevin was the powerhouse back then, no doubt
No needs to do superduppa scales for Kevin. Ambient, atmosphere and musicality it's something that you don't find in every song now with Rudess
Thumbs up for skinny petrucci
Tbh I think broad Petrucci completes the dt look
Sorry but thicc petrucci is where it's at
More importantly, back when the mix wasn't 90% guitar!
Now he look like undertaker
and beardless
This is probably the best recorded performance. Doesn't get better than this.
I wish we had a video of live at the marquee so bad
I heard the vocals of the Marquee were overdubbed.
yeah they are overdubbed because James had a cold that night. Not that he didn't sing as good any of the other shows in 92/93
Probably the best of all the best of all DT live concerts.
John Myung.. Still the best hair in metal history...
Nope, it is Lexxi Foxx ;)
It’s a shame that you ignore that Myung was and still is a big component of the material that was written by this era and also the one at this very moment. You gotta open those ears of yours no everything is guitar and drums, exists something called Harmony and a particular sound that they wanted to achieve and bass player are big part on this.

What about Marco Hietala
What about Wayne static
I wish Dream theater did more songs like Wait for sleep and Surrounded, they have a real ethereal dynamic quality and LaBrie’s voice sounds a lot less whiny in his mid range.
Kevin Moore wrote Wait for Sleep. One of my favorites. Love Jordan, but he doesn’t compose like Kevin.
U r not wrong, Josh - I saw these fellahs over here in the UK just after they released 'Live at the Marquee' (and they finally had 'Images and Words' available, imported from Europe) and our James was superb; Woughton Campus, if I recall it correctly.

There's a few on A dramatic turn of events I think that I enojoy also with James in that mid range. Like Far from heaven and Beneath the surface

They are the luckiest persons in the world, because they found each other and founded this legendary band.
I love this era of DT. JP with that Ibanez, Kevin Moore, Mike Portnoy still in the band, Labrie's voice is still kicking, JM and JP moving about the stage and headbanging. The music was technical but still raw enough to be emotive and powerful.
The new DT is great and all, but this is so much to live up too haha!
Best era!
Agree, kevin moore gave a melancholic feeling to their music that went lost when he left. Kevin was an act of class, from head to toe. Now they are great but the best ideas are gon with kevin. Afrer him they recycled their music, with class, but still is recycling.

Thanks man !
I came for another day
Good god, Labrie was just incredible in these days. That high end, Freddie Mercuryesque sheen in his upper range is the thing that just never returned after his voice blew out the next year. He's improved greatly from where he was in the mid 90s but man, you forget what an absolute monster he was. Even so, he's got one of the more difficult jobs on the touring circuit. These guys have played marathon shows on an almost nightly basis on tour for the last 20+ years and play everything in the original key. When you consider that, the guy is STILL an absolute monster.
If you think he’s good here (which he is) try to find some performances 1992 or earlier, like the Deer Park ones. Angelic.
Your Freddie Mercury comparison is exactly what i thought when i first heard James.
@@dinospumoni5611 My favorite is Live at the Marquee, Labrie just nails it during Metropolis, even better than the original!
It's 90% because most people have no idea what happened and just think he started sucking or always sucked if they never heard him when he was good. They should have made an album titled "Shellfish" and have him sing really low or something to get the message out. lol
Freddie Mercuryesque? ROFL not even close mate, not even close.
LaBrie's voice is AMAZING, I still cant believe what he has done at 4:52 OH MY FUCKIN GOD!

This concert make me teary-eyed. Not only is the concert beautiful, but I miss LaBrie's voice and I feel so bad for him. Sure the belting is madly impressive, but when he sings Wait for Sleep I fall in love with him. Heavenly voice.
Helps that he was also surprisingly attractive at this age too. Guy aged real badly
@@33FlamingTaco haha yeah it's so true, I keep saying this as well. Guy was a real stud but deteriorated due to those weight-gain years. JP borderline did the reverse.
Wait For Sleep is underrated and fucking beautiful
Do not forget that Kevin Moore was the wizard who made the old albums have musical atmosphere and mystical lyricism....not only metal moments....just remember space dye vest....so unique...They never came back from that.
Thanasis Simotas He’s an amazing lyricist and know prog fans don’t agree but I like Moors vocals over LaBrie.
agree 100%
This here changed my life.
My favourite DVD commentary. "John Myung obviously the one of us who has changed the most..."
when this came out it was nirvana and the grunge genre dominating the airwaves. hair metal had died out and there was just nothing out there. Then there was Dream Theater and holy shit it changed the whole scope of technical prowess blew away everything out there. Fates Warning always was great but just missed the mark. This band changed the way I listened to music forever. I got to hang with them alot back in the day in jersey and despite their genius they were just down to earth musicians no ego. I will always be a fan no matter how labrie sounds. times change you grow older and your voice changes so what. They toured like this non stop for years and are still touring.

Their best era in my very humble opinion. What they have accomplished in the last nearly 30 years is incredible but for me, When Dream and Day Unite through Awake were their best years.
Surrounded by far is my favourite DT song, especially the performance in this concert.
You're right my friend... Masterpiece
surrounded is the best
Honor thy father for me
Another Day is my favorite. Surrounded is close
This is the best dream theater. Ever.
John Petrucci's solo this night was one of the most beautiful examples of guitar mastery I've ever seen. Gives me goosebumps. All these guys are incredible.
Wow. How beautiful does "Wait For Sleep" and "Surrounded" here!
DT had much more soul in those days. And they looked better! :D
I remember having this on VHS back in the day
what a time to be alive man
Me too. Took it to the youth club try to impress the the guys there cause of petrucci
I still have the vhs and I remember getting dudes that I worked with who were in their 50s at the time into them. They’re now in their 70s and huge DT fans lol
@@fignootin Sometimes I think maybe it's just nostalgia but whenever I go back to stuff from the 90's, I'm always blown away again. No era was perfect of course but I really do think the 90's was likely the most impressive time in all of history. So much innovation, beauty, and excitement without technology taking over our lives. Sure, technology always improves in ways but the utilization of that technology does not always result in an improvement, if you know what I mean.
There is something so freaking good about this performance. It has a spice to it that I can't place my finger on.
Ibanez?
Energy, rawness, and by god… sex appeal
Elegance. Class. Virtuosity and POWER!
DT at their absolute PEAK!
Dream theater in their best days, LaBrie sang very well and Kevin Moore gave his special touch.
Sure kevin gave a special touch but musically wise 2000s dream theater is untouchable. Like the guitar solo in in the presence of enemies part 1 for example.
Nice sound quality. I can actually hear Kevin Moore's strings and synth through the mix. And these were the days when John Myung still played high up the neck. So its good to hear that as well.
Jay MacDonnell he plays lower now?
James back then had for me the most beautiful voice in the whole world...... damn 1994 Cuba trip......
James is with a perfect voice!
Best DT line up ever!
Excellent video quality for 1993
John used to give guitar lessons here on Long Island back in the day. Used to get hour lessons once a week for about 6 months or so. Pretty sure it was around the time right after they became DT.
What did you learn from him? And how was he back when they were majesty?
Aaaahhh! Back when they were still starving artists solely sustaining themselves on a steady diet of passion, creativity, discipline and a dream of becoming progressive rock gods.. The nostalgia is intoxicating!!
For me, these are the best years of the DT, no doubt.
Yeah, They need to hang it up. The last 3 albums suck
This is the Labrie I would listen again today...
Images and Words and Beyond this year. Happy 25th Anniv I&A!
Was a decent concert in Oslo
Was an awesome concert in Denver, Colorado
didnt get to fucking see it
How I wish Petrucci's tone was still like this...
his old tone was truly one of a kind, and impeccably beautiful
And his playing, he used to play so clean
Yeah his tone back then was.................very different lol but very charming.
Too trebly, something in between his modern tone and the tone he had back then would probably be best
He plays the Music Man now also.Still a great axe but different.
1990's petrucci best petrucci.
Best all of them
john petrucci of the white shoes, the best petrucci.
On of the greatest bands of all time in their prime, hungry as hell and literally taking no prisoners. This is perfection.
Ibanez days :(
I miss the DT from these days....there were much more music and emotion than technique... I reaaly miss THIS band...
I Agree... Im not a big fan of their work after Falling Into Infinity. This concert has a strange magic that I cannot explain. Petrucci's tone, cleanliness and soul here is superb. He nowadays seems to be like other person. Hes still incredible but not the same.
Yeah. Afterwards they focus to much on technique. Not bad, but no the same emotions.
The best Dream Theater line up
Finally, it's uploaded by someone... Many thanks!
THIS was DT! I consider my self lucky to have seen them with Kevin Moore - I think only once - maybe twice.
You can tell that a lot of planning and an lot of practice went into making the images and words record. It wasn't like hey boys lets go into the studio and hit the record button and see what happens. It's a record that changed the landscape and an absolute masterpiece from start to finish.
to live forever -> best version ever
Yeah! Super true!
Kevin Moore was the glue (and he also wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies, I believe). This is their peak as far as music and songs are concerned. Of course their musicianship just keeps getting better and better, but they're hard to listen to now. Thanks for editing and posting. Awesome.
I think their peak came five years later, when SFAM came out. Masterpiece.
Yes and same with many of my other favourite bands
Metallica,Yngwie Malmsteen,Satriani,Vai etc
All of them still great now but it’s called the arrow of time-
The music is most authentic in the early years 👏
Can't agree more.
He wrote some of the lyrics, certainly not all.
Eh, they've been at their peak multiple times in their career as far as I'm concerned
Under a Glass Moon is one of the most original solos JP has ever written. It just sounds amazing and it's pure technical, progressive. BTW, I love his tone on this one... almost clean on some parts :) I love the modern tone, but it's great to hear these versions.
LABRIE IS GOD HERE
sounds like a strangled cat
@@krusher74 shut up you have no idea what James went through. He actually almost gave up DT because of how the food poisoning affected his voice. But he didn’t give up, and recovered his voice through hard training. That’s why we are still able to be entertained by his wonderful voice. Dat wouldn’t be DT without Labrie same goes for the other members.
I can't believe how good this fucking show is. These guys are unreal.
Mike Portnoy’s drum kit and sound during this era of the band is by far my favorite. So much feel in his playing.
I really miss the old DT. 😥😥❤

Mike rocking the old Imperialstars, sound great. MP is one of the greatest rock drummers to ever live.
I've seen this line-up live in a local town in Switzerland, and three things I remember very vividly: James LaBrie's voice was audible directly in the front rows, such power he had, the calmness of Kevin Moore doing his solos/parts, and Petrucci's slower guitar parts like only he is capable to execute.
I'm jealous 😭

@@rpascon His troubles began after the next album, if I'm not mistaken. Live in Japan from the Awake tour is not that great.
I think ( In my own humble opinion always! ) Rudess was a bless and a curse at the same time for DT. After him the technical level of the band skyrocketed but in the same time.. all the albums with him started to sound (slowly) the same and colorless ( maybe even soulless)..
I think the heart of DT left when Kevin Moore stepped away..
I agree. Kevin Moore was the soul of DT, Portnoy its heart...
in the commentary John P says to the long ending note at 8:10 "nice F sharp there James" to which he replies "thank god I don't do these nowadays" the commentary is from 2010 or so but tells something
Yeah when Black Clouds and silver linings came out I was like "wow this is getting bland as hell"
they still made their best album with Rudess
I think a lot was lost when the seven string nightmare began. Maybe it didn’t happen in awake because they were experimenting with that heavier sounds for the first time. In their first albums bass, guitar and keyboards served the song on a perfect harmony. None stood out above the other, kevin moore kept it simple (but beautiful) with his choir sounds (wich, i think really helped to honor the name of the band. I think the “dream theater” name lost sense over time), john myung had a LOT of melodic lines, take learning to live as an example. Nowdays he is just relegated to a rhytmic function, playing the same riffs that petrucci plays on his 7 string but lower, wich makes no sense. By last, at that time john petrucci didn’t throw crazy speedy solos on every song. He had equal presence on that holy trinity of harmony.
When rudess came in they started slowly to drown john myung between the keyboard and guitar. They lost that simple, but beautiful and effective keyboard sounds. They kept it on metropolis pt 2, but since six degrees rudess started to play TOO MUCH leads. If we add to that the fact that john petrucci started to add a second guitar in the songs with the purpose of not losing the rhytm guitar when he was playing leads, they totally killed john myung. I mean, it is like dream theater have two guitarrist in the studio, they destroyed that perfect harmony trinity.
Lets take a random old song as an example: a change of seasons, particularly the part of the final guitar solo before sherinian keyboard solo. So, you have a sober petrucci solo clean of ego, a moore synth sound supporting with a much more emotional vibe and a myung beautiful bass line that you can actually HEAR, filling a lot of space between moore and petrucci. If they would have writen that some years after, petrucci would add a second guitar supporting him behind his solo, the keyboard would grow a big ego and will not want to play just a chord with a synth effect. That would be unacceptable. By last and the most sad thing: the beautiful bass line that you can actually hear and that can breath between the harmony would be totally killed and myung would be relegated to be drowning behind a second guitar that just exist on the studio. playing the same riff that a overgained 7 string guitar so you can barely hear him, i dont know, maybe because they hate him. The old perfect harmony killed.
Thats how a band transforms on a bad joke of themselves.
This is the true dream theater, with Mike Portnoy still a member of DT, you can feel the energy and big chemistry from all of them.
48:25 that bass... what a pleasure

I still remember the early 90's when thrash metal and shredder trends started to fade, my friends turned to bands from Seattle when the grunge epidemic broke out but I chose a different path. Dream Theater, Watchtower, Pain of Salvation, Psychotic Waltz, Ivory Tower and other early progressive metal bands as my ninja way.
