  • On this week’s episode of Saint Podcast, we welcome the worldwide-known James LaBrie - most known for being the famous lead singer of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater. James shares his musical journey through the years that lead him to live his lifelong dream of being an internationally successful musician.
Dream Theater has sold almost 20 million records worldwide and received 3 Grammy Award nominations - recently accepting a Grammy Award in late 2022. James discusses how their success was magnified after releasing their second album Images and Words in 1992 and the details of his lifestyle touring in a band worldwide.
Through this episode we discuss the importance of the simple pleasures in life and the profound effect believing in yourself can have while chasing your dreams. James continued to persevere through the challenges of being a startup musician for eight years before finally reaping the reward of landing his big break as lead singer for Dream Theater in 1990. Chance LaBrie (James’ son) joins his father through this interview to share what it was like growing up with his dad touring in a band as well as the unique opportunity to open for Dream Theater with his band Falset and share the stage with his father for the first time. James touches on some dark periods of his life while dealing with rupturing his vocal cords and the effects it had on his career and his mental posture. He had to deal with a negative backlash of people questioning his vocals, leading him to battle in deep trenches. James speaks on how he transcended his mindset and came to the realization he was fully in control of his perspective and continued to remain hardworking and ambitious - leading to the ultimate career and full life.

But the interview was great though, and JLB is obviously a cool, down-to-earth guy who followed his dream and now is living it, and who raised his kid the right way (l didn't even know about Chase till now, tbh)!

    • @Cloudburzt

I agree that it would suit some of the older songs to be re-phrased for live situations, like he did with some of the songs on the I&W tour in 2017 - not just half a step down, but actually re-phrased some higher parts, however, I think the Images and Words demos (and the album itself) with him at his absolute peak he was amazing, especially the demos. I think some of the shows from 1992 through 1994 he sounds absolute great and seems to have much more power to his higher range. I do think his vocal parts on DT are more tricky than a lot of people give him credit for. Obviously there are great singers out there, no matter the time frame. With all the singers they had auditioning, I'm sure they feel like they made a good choice though.

@@rhapsody1979 i'm a singer and even though some people criticise old Labrie, i still find him outstanding.
Just try to sing like his live in tokio show, not only he had an amazing range, his voice was incredibly powerful and full even in his highest tones!! i have seen no one sing like him, he was a monster!! #respect

I respect Labrie as a person, but Charlie Dominici is a million times better by a long shot...and Labrie's voice is just unbearable to hear now, not melodic at all and/or appeasing to the ear.

They literally replaced Charlie for underperforming live but took up labrie who never, not even in 1993 in his youth, sang like in the albums...

Dominici is like an opera singer. Didn't fit at all.
