  • IMF Warns the Maldives of "Debt Distress" Risk | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The International Monetary Fund has warned the Maldives of "debt distress" unless important policy changes are announced. The island nation's total foreign debt is over $3 billion with Chinese lenders making up almost 42% of it. IMF has attributed the country's struggles to rising commodity prices and a weakening tourism sector. President Mohamed Muizzu, who has followed a pro-China policy, has called Chinese financial assistance "selfless". He has also asked Beijing to restructure the debt owed by the Maldives. Is Muizzu's dependence on China backfiring? What should India do to prepare for a possible debt crisis in the Maldives? Palki Sharma tells you.

If Chinese or American soldiers will not be stationed here that would not make a difference but that is not case with Maldives.......We stationed our soldiers there "on the request of former Maldivian government" to maintain and operate the aircrafts which we donated to them which allows their citizens to get airlifted for various medical emergencies.
"Boycott Maldives" campaign is not because they ordered our soldiers to vacate the island nation. The boycott compaign is because of the misbehaviour and ill words spoken by the maldivian deputy ministers against our pm and entire India. We supported them with vaccines, food, water, medicines, funds, tourism etc etc and this is what we got in return. Is this justified??

One thing that IMF never complains about is the excessive lending of western institution lenders to poor countries like Sri Lanka at high interest rate, they never tried to rein in this type of shorter term and predatory lending, typically in the case of Sir Lanka the institution lenders like Black Rock provide credit at 5.6% per annum which is about twice as high as most of Chinese lenders and often unwilling to negotiate credit term when the poor countries faces debt repayment problems. IMF is basically controlled by the US and Black Rock is a major doner to US political parties,, it is very easy to see the links.

Imf warning or not. SL and BD also received similar warnings. But they are determined to be convinced other wise. Same countries are eager to prove their "brotherhood" with India when in trouble and when that happens is the moment when India needs to act. Act is a purely business manner which involves a lot of "transactional" approach. These so called "brothers" only understand transaction, carrot and stick aproach.
