Love these podcasts when they interview players and all the insight they bring. I hate when they interview the NHL celebrity so called "journalists", they inject themselves into stories about games and players that in reality these guys had absolutely nothing to do with . More players less reporters, great job guys !
This was the first time I had seen Jody Shelley talk and I was surprised at how articulate he was tbh maybe just a stereotype about some tough guys being dumb goons but he’s a smart dude

And how did Jarome Iginla, Wayne Simmonds, The Subban brothers, etc, overcome this imaginary barrier? I take issue with people saying there are too many white people in hockey, no one says this for other sports like the NFL or the NBA, do you hear white people complaining? I think pro sports are the last bastion of meritocracy. And Bob McKenzie after he's enjoyed a long career as a white man in hockey to say that they are too many white people in hockey is a little rich. He didn't give up his spot to a minority.

@@pill0wm4n admittedly it’s fully possible that you haven’t heard youth coaches, officials, players, etc. use racist or homophobic language, but I can assure you that you’re in the minority if that’s the case. There is no out and out rule that bans minorities from playing hockey, but this type of behavior weeds them out by making them feel unwelcome in the sport. Also, in the USA there is a real problem with the cost of playing, which literally means it is impossible for poor kids to play on competitive teams. Even if you’re against being more welcoming to minorities this applies to poor white people too so maybe this is a cause you can get behind.
@@teddyleft8525 So no, I haven't seen youth coaches use racist language or profanity or other inappropriate behavior with children as I went through the hockey ranks (I must be lucky), I'm not saying that doesn't exist but I don't know why this is exclusive to hockey somehow nor does it explain the countless minority players in the show despite this toxic environment. Especially as of late, where the mere accusation of prejudice or racism can have someone (if they're white of course) cancelled.
I take issue with your characterization of my position that I'm unwelcoming of minorities in hockey, my problem is: B. Mack saying there are too many "white" people in the sport. I do not complain that 70% of the NFL is black because I assume those players are the best of the best. I don't make up these imaginary barriers for the disenfranchised white running backs that are held back by hatred of their skin color.
Also you cannot now claim that the barrier to entry is financial because that wasn't our disagreement. Moreover, you correctly stated there are poor whites too so nothing to do with ethnicity. But to touch on that, there are programs that do a lot to help out poorer kids, also "play it again sports" (they resell used gear) makes equipment a little bit more affordable. But even the financial aspect I don't see any way around it, for example in southern Ontario we had to practice a 6 in the morning in a another town because there was no ice available. So many people want ice time which contributes to bringing the price up. You do have a point about gay players, I believe that they must have a hard time being themselves, but once again I don't think that is any different to the other major sports or is hockey particularly homophobic? What percentage of minorities should be in the NHL? Should the NBA & NFL hold campaigns that promote that there be more asian and white players in their leagues? Thanks for the reply.

It baffles me that some people are so against the idea of inclusivity in hockey. Hockey has given me greater joy than anything else in life and I want everyone to have the chance to experience that joy. What is wrong with that?
No one is keeping anyone out of it just like the NBA isn’t keeping white kids out of basketball but yet the majority of the league is black. Just because there isn’t a 50/50 split doesn’t mean there is inherit racism.
Hockey is the most diverse sport with players from Canada America, Germany, Russia, Chech republic, Finland, Sweeden and others, but people only focus on skin color and are ignorant to diversity. People only take issue with hockey because it is predominantly white.

I have a divided mind about the whole stick curve story. Part of me is nodding in furious agreement with people who say, "Rules are rules", and if you game them, that just makes you more clever than the next guy. I also came away from this podcast with a much reduced liking for McKenzie, because of his obvious vindictiveness - especially emanating from that story. Additionally, I don't know whether he is a grifter or is genuine about his adherence to current leftwing social and political trends.
However, his idea that the punishment meted out to the players with illegal curves was warranted NOT by the actions of those players but by the actions of an entirely different set of people years before and unconnected with them, is remarkable. It partakes of exactly the same kind of graceless judgement informing progressivist views; some people have done bad things, therefore ALL people in their 'group' as defined by progressives can be hounded (innocent or otherwise) because they have in some way inherited those crimes. So either McKenzie believes this and is being honest (and incorrect), or he doesn't and is a grifter.
