  • Aung San Suu Kyi -- who's been criticised for failing to defend the rights of the Rohingyas -- has said she won't be attending the UN's General Assembly in New York next week. However, she plans to make a televised address about "national reconciliation and peace". Our Special Correspondent, Fergal Keane, has been to Myanmar's second-biggest city, Mandalay, to assess the mood of the Buddhist majority there

Moreover, Bangladesh with a population of 175 millions has also been sending their unwanted illegal immigrants into not only neighboring Myanmar but also into North East India and Nepal for long as well. Like I said, tragic-ridden people of Burma has been suffering for centuries; first under British Colonialism, when the nation was put inside Greater India, thus several millions immigrants moved into small homogeneous nation in long and painful Colonial era; secondly through boycotted and blacklisted by the West, as impoverished Myanmar turned to Socialism for a relief. The Rohingya population is concentrated in the historical region of Arakan, an old coastal country of Southeast Asia. It is not clear who were the original settlers of Arakan. Burmese nationalist claims that the Rakhine inhabited Arakan since 3000 BCE are not supported by any archaeological evidence. By the 4th century, Arakan became one of the earliest Indianized kingdoms in Southeast Asia. The first Arakanese state flourished in Dhanyawadi. Power then shifted to the city of Waithali. Sanskrit inscriptions in the region indicate that the founders of the first Arakanese states were Indian. Arakan was ruled by the Chandra dynasty.[94] historian Daniel George Edward Hall stated that "The Burmese do not seem to have settled in Arakan until possibly as late as the tenth century AD. Hence earlier dynasties are thought to have been Indian, ruling over a population similar to that of Bengal. All the capitals known to history have been in the north near modern Akyab".[95]
      Arrival of Islam (8th-9th century)
Due to its coastline on the Bay of Bengal, Arakan was a key center of maritime trade and cultural exchange between Burma and the outside world, since the time of the Indian Mauryan Empire.[96] Arab merchants had been in contact with Arakan since the third century, using the Bay of Bengal to reach Arakan.[77] Starting in the 8th century, Arab merchants began conducting missionary activities, and many locals converted to Islam.[97] Some researchers have speculated that Muslims used trade routes in the region to travel to India and China.[98] A southern branch of the Silk Road connected India, Burma and China since the neolithic period.[99][100] Arab traders are recorded in the coastal areas of southeast Bengal, bordering Arakan, since the 9th century.[101] The Rohingya population trace their history to this period.[102]
Besides locals converting to Islam, Arab merchants married local women and later settled in Arakan. As a result of intermarriage and conversion, the Muslim population in Arakan grew.[77] Modern day Rohingya believe they descended from these early Muslim communities.
Settlers from Burma proper (9th-15th century)
The Rakhines were one of the tribes of the Burmese Pyu city-states. The Rakhines began migrating to Arakan through the Arakan Mountains in the 9th century. The Rakhines established numerous cities in the valley of the Lemro River. These included Sambawak I, Pyinsa, Parein, Hkrit, Sambawak II, Myohaung, Toungoo and Launggret. Burmese forces invaded the Rakhine cities in 1406.[94] The Burmese invasion forced Rakhine rulers to seek help and refuge from neighboring Bengal in the north.[94]

As a Buddhist, as far as my knowledge goes, there's no clauses that justify violence like you see in other religions (personally, I'm not sure you can even call Buddhism a religion). You simply cannot get around non-violence without breaking the most basic elements of Buddhism that you need in order to call yourself a Buddhist.
There isn't many hard and fast rules in Buddhism. It's up to you to decide whether what the Buddha's views are on a given subject appeal to your sense of reason and logic. But The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path are not optional. That's saying you're a Tottenham fan but you prefer to see Arsenal win and have all sorts of Arsenal memorabilia in your house, meaning you can't really call yourself a Tottenham fan.
If you don't accept the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, you're not a Buddhist.

I am from sri lanka . I am a budhist. In past in our country there were very few muslims compare to the today. Because of our religion we always tried to be good with them. Because according to our religion it is very bad things to harm others. But thing is now they have considerable number of people in our country. Now there are try to our destroy our religion and sinhala majority people. If you do little research you will find fact about what i am saying. We still want to live with them harmony. But there try to get the control of our country. Once i met girl from muslim majority area who is came to my university. She is 21 years old when she came to university. Until that day she has never spoken to a man instead of her father.I found similar stories from our university. LIke that they verty extrem. I am not going to justify myanmar budhist actions. But i have seen before how those muslims are act before all of this happens. Media always like to get the side of people who got victim in near future. They don't care why it happen and what are other factors of this problem. Because they are only care about trend and what is good for their business. But please do research about those muslims who are they what they have done before come to conclusion. Anyway i dont agree with violenc. no matter what happens we should try to protect humanity. But sometime i also don't see any other options even i dont approve or motivate those actions. But we should find better option for sake of humanity

The Buddha's attitude to apostasy is epitomised by his encounter with a man named Sunakkhatta. He was a disciple of the Buddha, but after a while became dissatisfied with the Dhamma and decided to renounce the Teacher and the teaching. Sunakkhatta came to the Buddha and said: `Lord, I am leaving you. I am no longer living by your teachings.' The Buddha responded to this declaration by asking Sunakkhatta some questions: `Did I ever say to you: ßCome, live by my teachingsû?' `No Lord.' `Then did you ever say to me that you wished to live by my teachings?' `No Lord.' `That being the case, who are you and what are you giving up, you foolish man?' (D.III,2-3). Neither in this case nor others, did the Buddha suggest that apostates be punished nor did he say that apostates would go to hell simply because of their apostasy. None of the criminal codes of traditional Buddhist countries criminalized apostasy.

In this post, I want to point out that after the 1st Anglo-Burmese war (1824-1826 AD), lower Burma (Mawlamyine and surrounding area; excluding Yangon), Tanintharyi Region, Rakhine Region fell into the British hand.
Just 100 years earlier, in 1874, Bodawpaya invaded Rakhine successfully. Bodawpaya made the lives of Muslims in Rakhine miserable.
(Background Note: In ancient time, Rakhine Region was a part of Bengal region and was a part of Maurya Empire. Rakhine region is separated from Burma by Rakhine Yoma, also known as the Arakan Mountains.
Wesali Kingdom also spelled Vaisali Kingdom was founded by Hindu Chandra Dynasty. Before 8th century AD, North Arkansas had been the seat of Hindu dynasties whose were upholders of Buddhism and they built many pagodas. In 788 AD, a new dynasty, also known as the Chandras, founded the city of Wesali. Anyway, the city of Wesali became a noted trade port to which as many as a thousand ships came every year. In 10th century AD, a Burman tribe settled in Rakhine region. Earlier inhabitants of Rakhine were people who were similar to the population in Bengal. These inhabitants were Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims.)
So, in 1784 AD, when Bodawpaya invaded Rakhine and made the lives of Muslims in Rakhine miserable, causing many of the Muslims fto flee to Chittagong. When Rakhine region fell to the British after the 1st Anglo-Burmese in 1826, these Muslims (the children of them) came back to their birth places in Rakhine. To refer to them as Bengalis foreigners because they came (actually came back) to Rakhine region during British Era is inaccurate historically.

So regardless of faith whoever commits evil, oppression, murder will be in trouble in the afterlife. Unless you believe in no accountability, no repercussion, you can do as you please because morality is different for every individual what is wrong for one person is completely right for someone else. Myanmar endured the worst immigration onslaught under long & painful Colonialism, when several million immigrants poured in, as small homogeneous country was put inside Greater India; while neighbors such as Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam under French Colonialism had no immigration issue at all. Like I said, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian in Myanmar up until Colonialism, when the small homogeneous country was placed inside Greater India, and several millions South Asian immigrants poured in; while neighbors such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam under French Colonialism had no immigration issue at all. It's all about Colonial masters & their South Asians they used as soldiers & servants to defend Colonial Empire worldwide, while master extracted wealth for centuries; and territorial expansion into next door Myanmar through immigration, which eventually end up a small homogeneous country, paying ultimate prices. Moreover, Old Northern India, from today's Nepal to North and North-East India, belong to Chinese-looking Indigenous Asiatic Native people. China has made no secret that it will one day help liberate the region which it sees as rightfully belonging to indigenous native people. @rusty hurd Now you know better! Like I said, tragic ridden Burma has been suffering for centuries; first under British Colonialism, when the nation was placed inside Greater India, thus several millions immigrants moved into small homogeneous country in long Colonial era; secondly through boycotted by the West, as impoverished Myanmar turned to Socialism for a relief. In fact, Burma has a sad saying that goes 'A poor young girl got raped and get hurt twice', referring to their nation's double tragedies. Present on going racial crisis in Myanmar is a product of British Colonialism, when the nation was placed inside Greater India, thus several millions immigrants poured into small homogeneous country in long Colonial era, including those from populous but tiny Bangladesh which has a population of 170 million, that had been sending millions of illegal immigrants into Myanmar for ages that Myanmar has declared national emergency in Rakhine State ever since early 1980s, but Western news medias ignored it all, as Burma has been boycotted by the West, when impoverished country turned to Socialism after long painful Colonial era; and as a result, hardly any one out of Myanmar knew truths. It's all about Colonial master British and their South Asians they used as soldiers/servants to defend Colonial Empire worldwide, while Colonial master extracted wealth for centuries; and territorial expansion into next door Burma through immigration, which eventually end up a small homogeneous country, paying ultimate prices. Moreover, Myanmar endured the worst immigration onslaught under long & painful Colonialism, when several million immigrants poured in, as small homogeneous country was put inside Greater India; while neighbors such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam under French Colonialism had no immigration issue at all. Like I said, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian in Myanmar up until Colonialism. I'm a former believer of lslam, please Muslim people just question the Islamic religion and accept apostasy, when it's become norm in Muslim community people of religion will think twice before doing something related to jihad.
