Sextortion warning: In six hours, my son was dead | BBC News

  • A mother whose son killed himself just six hours after being targeted by "sextortionists" is campaigning to raise awareness.
Jordan DeMay died in 2022 after brothers Samuel and Samson Ogoshi targeted him from Lagos, pretending to be an attractive girl his age, and then blackmailed him with explicit images of himself.
Now, his mother, Jenn Buta, is using the TikTok account Jordan set up for her to warn young people about such criminals, largely based in Nigeria - and her videos have more than a million "likes".
Nigerian police have told BBC News any suggestion they are not taking the crimes seriously is "laughable".

Happened to me during the covid-19 pandemic when I was feeling lonely and naive. A user in Instagram threatened to release a clip of me to all my Instagram followers. I then quickly blocked that user then went through the list of my followers and removed the profiles which are suspicious to me. Then finally set my profile to private immediately after doing so. That is one lesson I will never forget and will not repeat again. But R.I.P to this boy and condolences to his family.

    • @alanharper23
      @alanharper23 Před 2 měsíci +15

Well that's part of it too. Being aware that once they send something online, they can never get it back. It's all about educating them of the risks and the real dangers so they can better protect themselves, but the ultimate catch-all is knowing that they have support around them should something ever happen. That way, victims don't feel so alone. The sextortion itself is a source of great stress, but the helplessness of feeling alone and unable to tell anyone is why they consider taking their own life.

How can a young adult think that having nudes sent to friends is that bad? What kind of ideas did all of the boys who took their life have about sexuality? I think this report is missing a point not talking about conservative upbringing and taboos around sex. I simply cannot imagine what kind of a family you have to grow up in where you'd rather take your life than tell your parents that you sent nudes and are in trouble. That's not normal

Actually, it is quite understandable. Especially in teenage years, it is not unusual for youngsters to try and sort the problem themselves, even when they know they need help. Also, given the evil nature of these criminals, it is possible they threatened to harm the families, too. We can't presume to understand all this young man, and others like him, went through or what we would do under the same circumstances. We can only know that these children were viciously preyed upon, harassed, and worn down. It's a terrible, terrible tragedy!
All parents can do is their utmost to raise children who are aware, wise, and able to discern, in advance, the consequence of their actions. You think sending nude pictures to friends is safe? I disagree. Everyone wants and deserves some level of privacy, and when you expose yourself on a phone or video and press 'send', you place that privacy, and possibly your life, in the hands of others and at the whim of their values which, you may find, do not align with yours. Warning children about this, and teaching them to apply caution, wisdom, and integrity in their sexual choices is not conservatism or a taboo; it's good, plain, common sense!

It must have messed up his brain , his core, his very being, having a stranger blackmail him and have tremendous power over him. remember when you were a kid or a young adolescent, in those days, young as you are, you act sometimes irrationally , sometimes you don't think before you act... maybe having those pics of him posted online really did hurt him... I mean he even told the scammer that he would kill himself! it is obvious that he was desperate, he must have cursed at the scammer a thousand times before pleading with him... he must have cried, felt sadder than ever before... he was just 17... young ppl (and not so young) overreact sometimes... It's not only about talking to the kids. It's about monitoring their device use. No child has 'privacy' on their devices. All parents are ultimately the ones who have to help the child pick up the pieces after a mistake so they must monitor what the kids do on the devices. They must know who kids talk to and the content of chats. No one must be allowed to communicate with children without the parents' consent.
This should grow into some form of counsel and discussion through adulthood too. Kids need sound counsel from experienced people.

No offense to Jordan, but this has to be an extreme case of overreaction, I mean sure having the picture of your Willy send to your friends and family is not pleasant and very embarrassing , but it definitely isn't grounds for suicide . No one is even going to remember that after a while. Of course if he had already been battling some sort of a mental issue, adding this on top of that would most likely push most of us over the edge

Please kids, Don't engage in sexual activities online. They also use a software in Skype to look like what they want show but they're actually men behind the camera.
You wont feel threaten if u know u didn't do or shared anything. Block and restart your phone and computer if u may have clicked to an unknown links.

They need to stop treating black people like they are God, its absolutely evil the things they do to children old people etc. Their racism is constantly in our faces to. There are hundreds of black male pedophiles playing on ROBLOX an online kids game and others like it many of these games are themed to be anti white hyper sexual and poking fun at suicide and its all black men doing it. The BLACK MASS must be stopped, its Satanic and has nothing to do with Black peoples rights. This is what "anticolonialism" looks like a black mans entitlement to white children and white parents shaming their white children for existing out of projected guilt. Protect your children, keep them safe from them especially their communist Marxist victimhood propaganda. Adult black men are teaching kids to twerk sexually in these online games, parents should be smart enough not to give their kids a smart phone. Ottomans want to groom your children, don't let them. This is being spearheaded by Muslimgauze and the Alphabet Legion AKA Satans Army.

This is where you need a stronger mentality and outplay their mind games.
Threatening with pictures? Tell them to do it quick to help you get a kick start in gaining popularity so that you can join the adult industry when you become of age. If they really do it, well, it's not the ideal path, and not a path I would recommend, but at least they've paved a path for you to potential fame and money. It's better than losing your life.
Showing signs of weakness will only encourage this kind of behaviour, because they know it will work.
